The dentition from two Middle Mississippian period (~AD 1100-1350) site samples (Gray Farm [~AD 1150-1400], Link/Slayden [~AD 1200-1400]) from the Kentucky Lake Reservoir of west-central Tennessee area are examined for the presence of caries to assess whether a maize-intensive subsistence economy is evident or the retention of the cultivation of domesticated native seeds (i.e., the Eastern Agricultural Complex). Given the absence of archaeological context, the caries prevalence operates as an archaeological problem-solving tool. The caries prevalence by tooth type are compared to a Late Woodland period (~AD 400-900) site sample (Hobbs) from the Kentucky Lake Reservoir as well as three unequivocal maize-intensive site samples from the Late Mississippian period (~AD 1300-1550) of East Tennessee. The Gray Farm site aligns statistically with the maize-intensive samples; Link/Slayden does not and resembles the caries prevalence of the Hobbs sample. The Mississippianization process in the Kentucky Lake Reservoir clearly varies in the adoption of maize as a primary cultigen. This may reflect the difference in geo-political location of Gray Farm and Link/Slayden relative to neighboring Mississippian economies, particularly to the east (Middle Cumberland Culture), or it may reflect potential temporal differences among the Middle Mississippian period settlements within the Kentucky Lake Reservoir.

The later prehistoric subsistence-settlement pattern in the Kentucky Lake Reservoir (KLR) of northern west-central Tennessee is of interest as human occupation inexplicably terminates by AD 1450 as part of a larger regional depopulation. Antemortem tooth loss (ATL) collectively and by tooth type was identified in four site samples from the KLR. These are a Late Woodland (AD 600-900) sample (Hobbs) and three Middle Mississippian period (AD 1100- 1400) hierarchically organized and presumptively maize agriculturalist samples (Link/Slayden, Gray Farm , Thompson Village). ATL prevalence in the Hobbs sample is consistent with a native crop and seasonal foraging economy. The ATL in the Link sample is more congruent with the pre-maize Late Woodland sample than the essentially contemporaneous Gray Farm site sample. Thompson Village, a later-dated satellite community of the Gray Farm polity, exhibits significantly fewer ATL than the Gray Farm sample. This may flag climate-influenced agricultural shortfall of dietary carbohydrates later in the occupation sequence. Additionally, males in the Gray Farm site sample have significantly more ATL than males in the other two Mississippian samples. The patterns suggest regional, possibly shortfall mitigated, differences in maize intensification with a polity-specific male-focused maize consumption in the Gray Site.

Gender determination of the human remains can be very challenging, especially in the case of incomplete ones. Herein, we report a proof-of-concept experiment where the possibility of gender recognition using Raman spectroscopy of teeth is investigated. Raman spectra were recorded from male and female molars and premolars on two distinct sites, tooth apex and anatomical neck. Recorded spectra were sorted into suitable datasets and initially analyzed with principal component analysis, which showed a distinction between spectra of male and female teeth. Then, reduced datasets with scores of the first 20 principal components were formed and two classification algorithms, support vector machine and artificial neural networks, were applied to form classification models for gender recognition. The obtained results showed that gender recognition with Raman spectra of teeth is possible but strongly depends both on the tooth type and spectrum recording site. The difference in classification accuracy between different tooth types and recording sites are discussed in terms of the molecular structure difference caused by the influence of masticatory loading or gender-dependent life events.

Abstract: The theory distinguishes human based on four different personality types such as: sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic. Different types of personality caused by differences in the dominant fluid in the body. These differences will result in terms of behavior, ways of thinking and to get along. The type of this research that is descriptive qualitative which it is describing the logical reasoning based on Hippocrates personality types. The logical reasoning is analyzed through the four types of personality in relation to mathematical problem solving. The Analysis is done based on the logical reasoning indicator/ subindicator and the steps of problem solving stated by Polya. The result shows that there is a reasoning difference on each type of personalities. The difference can be terms of the strenght or the weakness. Sanguine is quicker in understanding problems and communicating results, choleric is more accelerated in work, melancholic is more perfect at work, and  phlegmatic is superior in terms of accuracy. AbstractResearch on impact in student achievement of online homework systems compared to traditional methods is ambivalent. Methodological issues in the study design, besides of technological diversity, can account for this uncertainty. Hypothesis This study aims to estimate the effect size of homework practice with exercises automatically provided by the ‘e-status’ platform, in students from five Engineering programs. Instead of comparing students using the platform with others not using it, we distributed the subject topics into two blocks, and created nine probability problems for each block. After that, the students were randomly assigned to one block and could solve the related exercises through e-status. Teachers and evaluators were masked to the assignation. Five weeks after the assignment, all students answered a written test with questions regarding all topics. The study outcome was the difference between both blocks’ scores obtained from the test. The two groups comprised 163 and 166 students. Of these, 103 and 107 respectively attended the test, while the remainder were imputed with 0. Those assigned to the first block obtained an average outcome of −1.85, while the average in the second block was −3.29 (95% confidence interval of difference, −2.46 to −0.43). During the period in which they had access to the platform before the test, the average total time spent solving problems was less than three hours. Our findings provide evidence that a small amount of active online work can positively impact on student performance.

AbstrakKemampuan pemecahan masalah merupakan bagian dari kurikulum pendidikan matematika saat ini. Fakta di lapangan menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa masih belum optimal, salah satu penyebabnya adalah masih banyak siswa yang menemui kesulitan dalam hal pemahaman konsep dasar. Mengoptimalkan kemampuan pemecahan masalah diantaranya dapat ditempuh melalui pembelajaran yang berpusat pada siswa. Model pembelajaran Learning Cycle 7E dan Problem Based Learning merupakan dua dari beragam model pembelajaran yang berpusat pada siswa. Adapun tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan pencapaian kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis antara siswa yang mendapatkan model pembelajaran Learning Cycle 7E dan Problem Based Learning. Hasil dari penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa tidak terdapat perbedaan peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis antara siswa yang mendapatkan model pembelajaran Learning Cycle 7E dan Problem Based Learning. Sementara itu, untuk kualitas peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa yang mendapatkan model pembelajaran Learning Cycle 7E dan Problem Based Learning masing-masing berinterpretasi sedang namun skor perolehan nya berbeda. Secara umum, sikap siswa terhadap pembelajaran matematika menggunakan model pembelajaran Learning Cycle 7E dan Problem Based Learning masing-masing berinterpretasi baik. Abstract (Students’ Problem Solving Ability through Learning Cycle 7E and Problem Based Learning)Currently mathematical problem solving ability was a part of mathematics curriculum. In fact, the mathematical problem solving ability of students was not optimized, one of the reasons is there are still many students who have problems in terms of understanding the basic concepts. To optimizing the mathematical problem solving ability of students, it, can be reached by implementing student-centered learning. Learning Cycle 7E and Problem Based Learning are two of a lot of student-centered learning models. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference of achievement mathematical problem solving ability between students who get Learning Cycle 7E and Problem Based Learning models.  The results of this study are there is not a difference enhancement of mathematical problem solving ability between students who get Learning Cycle 7E and Problem Based Learning models. Meanwhile, the quality of enhancement mathematical problem solving ability students who get Learning Cycle 7E and Problem Based Learning models are in the middle interpretation. In general, students' attitudes toward learning mathematics using Learning Cycle 7E and Problem Based Learning models each in good interpretation.

The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in the improvement of students' mathematical problem-solving abilities with the Contextual Teaching and Learning approach in the material of the two-variable linear equation system in class X SMA Negeri 2 Pematangsiantar. This study used an experimental method with the aim of being in accordance with the previous statement to determine the difference in students' mathematical problem-solving abilities with a contextual approach and an expository approach, with a randomized pretest-posttest control group design. The average increase in problem-solving abilities in the control class was 0.1688 while the increase in problem-solving abilities in the experimental class was 0.0085. By using the t-test (SPSS), with a value of Fcount = 10.907 and a significant level of 0.05, a significant probability is obtained 0.002 <0.05, it can be concluded that there is a difference in normalized gain or an increase in problem-solving ability with conventional and contextual approaches. Based on the average gain of the control and experimental classes, the increase in the control class using the conventional approach is higher than the experimental class with the contextual approach. The difference in increasing problem-solving abilities in conventional classrooms is possible due to differences in students' entry-level abilities, which can be seen in the average pretest of each class.

Guidance intended to reduce fluoride toothpaste ingestion in early childhood was introduced in Ireland in 2002. In 2007, water fluoride concentration was adjusted from 0.8–1.0 to 0.6–0.8 ppm. The objective of this study was to determine the difference in caries and fluorosis levels following introduction of these 2 policy measures. A before-and-after study compared caries and fluorosis in random samples of 8-y-olds in Dublin ( n = 707) and Cork-Kerry ( n = 1148) in 2017 with 8-y-olds in Dublin ( n = 679) and Cork-Kerry ( n = 565) in 2002. Dentinal caries experience (primary teeth, d3vcmft(cde)) and fluorosis (permanent teeth, Dean’s index of very mild or higher) were clinically measured. Lifetime exposure to community water fluoridation (CWF) was classified as “full CWF”/“no CWF.” Effect of examination year on caries prevalence and severity and fluorosis prevalence was assessed using multivariate regression adjusting for other explanatory variables. There was little change in commencement of fluoride toothpaste use at ≤24 mo following introduction of toothbrushing guidance. Among children with full CWF, there was no statistically significant difference in caries prevalence or severity between 2017 and 2002. In 2017, caries prevalence was 55% in Dublin (full CWF) and 56% in Cork-Kerry (full CWF), and mean d3vcmft(cde) among children with caries was 3.4 and 3.7, respectively. Caries severity was less in 2017 (mean 4.2) than 2002 (mean 4.9) among children with no CWF ( P = 0.039). The difference in caries severity between children with full CWF and no CWF was less in 2017 than in 2002 (interaction P = 0.013), suggesting a reduced benefit for CWF in 2017. In 2017, fluorosis prevalence was 18% in Dublin (full CWF) and 12% in Cork-Kerry (full CWF). Fluorosis was predominantly “very mild” with no statistically significant difference between 2017 and 2002. CWF at 0.6 to 0.8 ppm is an effective caries-preventive measure. Results suggested low uptake of toothbrushing guidance, a reduced caries-preventive effect for CWF in primary teeth, and no reduction in fluorosis following introduction of the policy measures.
