The financial service is facing a new delivery challenge in the shape of the Internet and e-commerce (Akamavi, 2005). The Internet as a channel for banking service delivery is fundamentally different from other channels such as branch networks, telephone banking, or automated teller machines (ATMs). The term e-banking is often used interchangeably with online banking, Internet banking, and PC banking. For example, Pikkarainen, Pikkarainen, Karjaluoto, and Pahnila (2004) define online banking as an Internet portal, through which customers can use different kinds of banking services ranging from bill payment to making investments. A bank’s Web site offering only information without possibility to conduct any transactions is not qualified as online banking. Lbbotson and Moran (2003) use the term “electronic forms of banking”, which includes telephone banking, PC banking, and Internet banking. In line with this definition, Lassar, Manolis, and Lassar (2005) refer e-banking as various formats or technologies, including telephone banking, direct bill payment, electronic fund transfer, PC banking, and online (Internet) banking. In this article, e-banking is referred to Internet banking or Online banking that it must enable Internet based transactions. This distinguishes e-banking from other electronic-based remote banking. E-banking can be carried out anywhere from a device with an Internet connection and it enables access to account information and conduct online transactions. E-banking brings up unique types of challenges and requires novel solutions (Shah & Gupta, 2005; Southard & Siau, 2004). This article reviews how e-banking has been developed in Abbey National PLC (Public Limited Company) with a focus on the important issues when implementing e-banking applications1.

After technological progress and in particular the development of internet, internet banking service has intensified the competition between banks as well as allowed customers to easily compare the services that provided by different banks. While the goal of any business entity in the long term is to increase its productivity and maximisation of the profits, customer retention becomes an important component of banking strategy in today’s increasingly competitive environment to foster customer relationship management. In order to achieve this, it is important to concentrate on the consumer’s continued use of a service rather than solely on their acceptance of the service (Adapa, 2011). Therefore, understanding the importance of consumers’ continued use is the key element to maximise customers’ retention in internet banking services.

The Indian Banking industry is seeing an exceptional challenge. To remain ahead, banks are thinking of plenty of services to draw customers. Services including 24-hours banking, Service at entryway step, Telephone banking, Internet banking, Extended Business Hours (EBH), Speedy handling are just a couple to mention. The larger piece of the present bank transactions happens elsewhere other than in-branch premises. This shows the growth of “virtual” banks in India. With accommodation, speed, productivity, and adequacy, these virtual banks, as a result, have opened up another universe of conceivable outcomes and brought major changes in giving a wide scope of services. Virtual banks are presently observed as a response to the challenge of planning another service channel that is completely secure, useful, and which customers can promptly figure out how to utilize and confide in it. (Aladwani, A, M.) Virtual banking, an amazing “esteem included” instrument, has become the point of convergence for banks to attract and hold customers. However, the point of these services is to satisfy customers; there is a need to comprehend customer mindfulness, observation, and significantly the degree of satisfaction. Virtual banking is a transporter that licenses customers to access and do economic transactions on their financial foundation obligations from their web empowered PC systems with net association with banks’ web locales whenever 24 Hours. Banks assume a vital job in advancing online businesses. Even though V-customers have the alternative of money down, which is by all accounts secure reliable, still there is an inclination for the V-payment plans, which must be given through banks. Banks go about as solid and dependable go-betweens in online transactions, and they give an intense opening in the online business. At present, banks have V-payment systems like Internet banking, electronic fund transfers (NEFT/RTGS), plastic money (credit card and debit card), and portable banking. These systems give payment to online transactions like the online acquisition of items, versatile revives, lodging booking, ticket booking, and so forth by considering a wide range of safety efforts. For the genuine working of these V-services, the need for able frameworks is an unavoidable element. Reserve Bank of India is observing and inspecting the legitimate and different requirements of V-Banking on persistent bases to guarantee that V-banking would create on sound lines, and V-Banking related challenges would not represent a risk to financial dependability. Hence, the present study is on the challenges of Virtual banking services in its challenge management strategies and the study based on secondary sources of data.

PurposeIn this era of digital technology, the banking sector has revolutionized its operations by using web-based Internet banking services. However, the success of these financial services is dependent on Internet banking user continuance intention instead of initial adoption. The current study develops a theoretical framework based on three well-known theories, namely the expectation–confirmation theory, self-determination theory (SDT) and the commitment trust theory, to investigate Internet banking user continuance intention towards use of Internet banking services.Design/methodology/approachFollowing positivist paradigm, a research survey was conducted towards Internet banking users of commercial banks. In response, 355 valid observations were retrieved and used for data analysis. For data analysis, this study has used a latest statistical approach, namely structural equation modelling (SEM).FindingsThis study has confirmed that factors underpinning the commitment trust theory, SDT and expectation–confirmation model have significant impact on Internet banking user continuance intention. The research model explained 68.4% of variance in determining Internet banking user continuance intention, which is substantial. The effect size analysis (f2) indicates that perceived usefulness is the most important factor among all other exogenous variables. The predictive relevance of the research model was found substantial Q2 50.3%. These findings confirmed that the research model has substantial power to predict Internet banking user continuance intention.Practical implicationsFrom a managerial perspective, findings of this research give deeper insight into financial advisors, bank managers and policy- makers to understand human motivation and expectation–confirmation factors in order to retain customers and gain return on Information Technology (IT) investment. Additionally, results suggest that attention should be given on user trust, which in turn boosts user intention towards continuance use of Internet banking services. Extension of the self-determination framework contributes to theory and augments e-commerce literature, especially in a post-adoption setting.Originality/valueThere are several studies that investigate Internet banking user pre-adoption behaviour. Therefore, less is discussed about the Internet banking user’s post-adoption behaviour. Findings of this study help financial advisors to comprehensively understand which factor influences Internet banking user behaviour towards continue use of Internet banking services.

Internet banking has become the preferred channel for conducting banking activities across globe and amongst all social demographics. Only a few other technological adoptions can compare with the recent trend of use of Internet banking facilities. Given the cost advantages and benefits it has to offer, it is widely touted as a win-win strategy for both banks and customers. However, with the growth in E-banking services and reliance on a public channel–Internet–to conduct business, it has been challenging for banks to ensure integrity and confidentiality of highly sensitive information. This chapter presents an overview of authentication issues and challenges in the online banking area with analysis on some of the better approaches. The chapter compares different authentication methods and discusses ensuing issues. The chapter will be invaluable for managers and professionals in understanding the current authentication landscape.

The purpose of this article is to determine whether there is protection for customers in the use of internet banking when conducting banking transactions, in addition to protecting the rights of customers as consumers of banking services. The research method used is the normative research method. The writing of this article uses a statute approach that prioritizes legal materials in the form of statutory regulations as a basic reference for conducting research. The results of the study show that the use of telecommunication media and information technology in this era of globalization occupies an important position in order to facilitate the process of transactions, especially banking transactions and free trade. With the development of technology and information, it opens up opportunities for everyone to easily take legal actions, such as buying and selling banking transactions. In practice, internet banking is one of the service delivery channels in the banking sector which is closely related to technology, on the one hand it provides many benefits, but on the other hand it can also cause losses for customers. Therefore, there is a need for more specific legal protection for internet banking services.

PurposeThe advancement in Internet technology has played a significant role in revolutionizing the Internet banking services. Therefore, little is discussed about factors that motivate technology user to continue the use of Internet banking services. The current study investigates Internet banking user continuance behavior toward the use of Internet banking services with the integration of two-well known information system (IS) theories namely task technology fit (TTF) and technology continuance theory (TCT).Design/methodology/approachThe research design of this study is based on positivist paradigm and followed quantitative research approach. Data were collected from 360 Internet banking users of commercial banks across Pakistan. The research model was tested with structural equation modeling (SEM).FindingsThe research model had explained 53.9% variance in Internet banking user continuance intention. Next to this, the predictive relevance of the research model was tested with Stone-Geisser's Q² values using blindfolding procedure. Results revealed that the newly developed integrated technology continuance research model has substantial power to predict Internet banking user continuance intention. Moreover, the effect size analysis revealed that factors like satisfaction and user expectation were the most important factors in determining Internet banking user continuance intention.Practical implicationsFor practical implications importance performance matrix analysis (IPMA) has used to see the importance and performance of the underpinned factors. Findings indicate that managers and policy makers should focus on user satisfaction, perceived usefulness and expectation confirmation in order to enhance the Internet banking user continuance intention toward the use of Internet banking services. Some of the ways banks can do this is to develop esthetic Internet banking website with charm of novelty, relevant information and smooth flows with less complex redirects.Originality/valueUnlike prior studies that focus on Internet banking user pre-adoption issues, the current study examines post-adoption issue of Internet banking users and investigates Internet banking user continuance intention. This study is significant as it integrates two-well known theories namely TCT and TTF in Internet banking user continuance intention and augments the IS literature by developing an integrated technology continuance model (TCM).
