<p>The Tarawera Volcanic Complex is situated on the south eastern side of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, and is an association of rhyolite domes, flows and tephra, and basalt scoria. Twelve rhyolite domes are described, and using evidence obtained from the good internal sections available, the general structure of volcanic domes is discussed. Tephra stratigraphy of the Tarawera-Rerewhakaaitu region is described and by relating stratigraphy on the mountain to this tephra, four major eruptions can be recognized. A sequence of events for the Kaharoa eruption about 1020 A.D. can be postulated. The Tarawera eruption in 1886, however, was observed, and from the eye witness accounts, together with present day field evidence, a detailed account can be written. All the rocks of the Complex are described petrographically, mineralogically, and in some cases petrochemically. Twelve new full analyses; nine partial analyses of plagioclase, and eight partial analyses of residual glass are given, and the relationship of these is illustrated by variation diagrams. Finally, the origins of the acid and basic rocks of the Complex are discussed, and a hypothesis for the occurrence of the two lava types is given.</p>

To investigate the sequence of events that occur in the liver during mirex-induced adaptive liver growth, [3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA, thymidine kinase (TK), and ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) were studied in intact and adrenalectomized (ADX) mirex-dosed rats, and the responses were compared with experimental groups receiving corticosterone. In intact mirex-dosed rats (a response that is both hyperplastic and hypertrophic) there was a 36-h peak in ODC activity, and a 48-h peak in both [3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA and TK activity. This was accompanied by a 72% increase in relative liver weight (RLW). In contrast, in ADX mirex-dosed rats (a predominately hyperplastic response), there was a biphasic ODC response (18- and 36-h peaks), a 36-h TK peak, and a 48-h peak in [3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA. Both TK activity and [3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA were significantly elevated for the remainder of the 96-h study period. There was a 38% increase in RLW. Corticosterone supplements to mirex-dosed intact rats resulted in a biphasic peak of TK activity (30- and 48-h peaks), a reduced ODC peak at 36 h, and a 48-h peak in [3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA. RLW response was similar to the response in intact mirex-dosed rats. Corticosterone supplements to mirex-dosed ADX rats eliminated the 48-h peak of [3H]thymidine incorporation into DNA, reduced TK activity and shifted the peak to 30 h, and eliminated the ODC biphasic response. The RLW increase was similar to the response in intact mirex-dosed rats with a maximum 80% increase at 72 h postmirex dose.

The object of this research is the political history of the Ulus of Jochi as a part of the Great Mongol Empire. The subject of this is the Eastern policy of Mengu-Timur &ndash; the 6th ruler of the Ulus of Jochi (1266-1282). The author examines such aspects of the topic as the relationship of Mengu-Timur with the rulers of the uluses of Hulagu &ndash; Abaga, Chagatay &ndash; Borak, Ugedei &ndash; Kaidu, decisions made by the representatives of the uluses of Jochi, Chagatay and Ugedei in Talas Kurultai. Special attention is given to the analysis of relationship between Mengu-Timur and the ruler of the Central Ulus of Kublai, who founded the Yuan Empire. Comparative analysis is conducted on the written sources and scientific works on the topic. The sequence of events is reconstructed in chronological order. The author agrees with his predecessors that Mengu-Timur became the first sovereign ruler of the Ulus of Jochi. The scientific novelty consists in the conclusion that entitlement of Mengu-Timur as independent monarch was not a decision of Talas Kurultai. In Talas Kurultai in 1269 Kaidu was recognized as the leader of the right wing of the Mongol Empire, which included the Ulus of Jochi, Chagatay and Ugedei. The relations with the Great Khan in Kurultai were not settled, and the independence of uluses was not proclaimed. In the early 1370s, Mengu-Timur was named qayan, i.e. the supreme ruler above the khan. In 1277, Kublai's sons Numugan and Kukju were caught by the rebels, who sent them to Mengu-Timur. He did not support the rebels, but kept the son of Kublai. Since that moment, Mengu-Timur did was not subordinate to Kublai or Haidu, did not interfere into the conflict between them, restraining both of them from military clashes. Although Mengu-Timur maintained peaceful relations with other uluses, he was qayan title was not recognized.

SummaryThe distribution of trace elements is studied in different acid and basic rocks, adjacent to the copper lodes in the Mosaboni mines, Singhbhum, and adjoining the thrust zone, as well as of areas far away from the mineralized zones. Specific differences in composition and trace constituents in these rocks especially as regards S, Cu, Ni, and Co, suggest that the relationship of the Singhbhum granite with the soda granite is most unlikely, and that there is a connection between the soda granite and the sulphide ore-fluid ; a genetic relationship of sulphide mineralization with the epidiorite is doubtful. The possibility of the existence of a common source for the Chotanagpur granite and the Singhbhum granite is inferred.

The construction of Degrés is based on a series of texts taken from Western literature and ranging from Homer to Keats. These are grouped in different ways around a brief sequence of events, and it is the responsibility of each reader to elaborate on the scanty story by using the information offered by these texts, to the extent of his knowledge, awareness, and willingness to participate in the creation of the novel. An analysis of the texts extracts the information each contains, then correlates relevant fact and possible interpretation in order to show clearly the two major themes of the novel: the relationship of Vernier to his nephew Eller, and the vast possibilities open to man in the world; and the three styles of presentation: as a structure, a personal experience, and a retrospective fact. Butor teaches his readers to understand his work by attempting to break down mental barriers between different fields of experience and force people to draw on the full range of their knowledge at all times.

"A Narratological Analysis of the Novel Veriphantors Betrogener Frontalbo by Johann Gorgias. Veriphantors Betrogener Frontalbo is the most important novel by the German-Transylvanian writer Johann Gorgias. It represents the pinnacle of his poetic œuvre, since earlier texts often still consist of few plot elements, and Veriphantors Buhlende Jungfer is a text that is not yet particularly well structured. The educational intent of Gorgias’s earlier texts can seem quite offensive today, as the reader is often bombarded with general rules, commonplaces, and moralizing examples drawn from life after a small plot point. In the narratological analysis, the relationship of the narrated time and the narrative time or pace are examined first. Furthermore, the sequence of events presented, the length of the presentation of incidents (duration), and the “repetition relations” in which “the narrated and the narration” stand, are identified and differentiated. AbstractThis paper reports an experimental analysis of conflicting interests in the cooperatively breeding Lamprologus brichardi (Cichlidae). Helpers clearly prefer to stay in the family territory rather than leave for an aggregation of same-size young or for an unoccupied area-even when their chances of reproducing independently are superior to those in the field. Helpers usually attain independence when the breeders force them to leave the territory. Breeders' toleration of helpers depends on the stage in the reproductive cycle, the size of helpers and the need for helpers. Large, previously expelled helpers are reaccepted when competition is increased. In these circumstances breeders prefer their own former helpers to strange young. Experimental and field evidence suggests that 3 factors are ultimately important for the breeder/helper relationship: reproductive parasitism by mature helpers, eventual cannibalism on breeders' eggs and competition for shelter within the territory. A graphical model shows how the initially common interests of breeders and helpers develop divergently when helpers reach the size at which they become sexually mature and less susceptible to predation. Large helpers pay to stay. The relationship of breeders and large helpers meets the criterion of reciprocal altruism.

The Mesozoic-Cenozoic coral Order Scleractinia has been suggested to have originated or evolved (1) by direct descent from the Paleozoic Order Rugosa or (2) by the development of a skeleton in members of one of the anemone groups that probably have existed throughout Phanerozoic time. In spite of much work on the subject, advocates of the direct descent hypothesis have failed to find convincing evidence of this relationship. Critical points are:(1) Rugosan septal insertion is serial; Scleractinian insertion is cyclic; no intermediate stages have been demonstrated. Apparent intermediates are Scleractinia having bilateral cyclic insertion or teratological Rugosa.(2) There is convincing evidence that the skeletons of many Rugosa were calcitic and none are known to be or to have been aragonitic. In contrast, the skeletons of all living Scleractinia are aragonitic and there is evidence that fossil Scleractinia were aragonitic also. The mineralogic difference is almost certainly due to intrinsic biologic factors.(3) No early Triassic corals of either group are known. This fact is not compelling (by itself) but is important in connection with points 1 and 2, because, given direct descent, both changes took place during this only stage in the history of the two groups in which there are no known corals.

Echinodermata is a phylum of marine invertebrates which has been extant since Cambrian time (c.a. 500 m.y. before the present). Modern examples of echinoderms include sea urchins, sea stars, and sea lilies (crinoids). The endoskeletons of echinoderms are composed of plates or ossicles (Fig. 1) which are with few exceptions, porous, single crystals of high-magnesian calcite. Despite their single crystal nature, fracture surfaces do not exhibit the near-perfect {10.4} cleavage characteristic of inorganic calcite. This paradoxical mix of biogenic and inorganic features has prompted much recent work on echinoderm skeletal crystallography. Furthermore, fossil echinoderm hard parts comprise a volumetrically significant portion of some marine limestones sequences. The ultrastructural and microchemical characterization of modern skeletal material should lend insight into: 1). The nature of the biogenic processes involved, for example, the relationship of Mg heterogeneity to morphological and structural features in modern echinoderm material, and 2). The nature of the diagenetic changes undergone by their ancient, fossilized counterparts. In this study, high resolution TEM (HRTEM), high voltage TEM (HVTEM), and STEM microanalysis are used to characterize tha ultrastructural and microchemical composition of skeletal elements of the modern crinoid Neocrinus blakei.

Electron microscopy has proved to be an invaluable discipline in studies on the relationship of viruses to the origin of leukemia, sarcoma, and other types of tumors in animals and man. The successful cell-free transmission of leukemia and sarcoma in mice, rats, hamsters, and cats, interpreted as due to a virus or viruses, was proved to be due to a virus on the basis of electron microscope studies. These studies demonstrated that all the types of neoplasia in animals of the species examined are produced by a virus of certain characteristic morphological properties similar, if not identical, in the mode of development in all types of neoplasia in animals, as shown in Fig. 1.
