<p>The guided package tour is a special tourism product that is composed of many components that are organized and offered by a tour operator. The literature shows that many visitors prefer guided package tours because they are a convenient way of organising a holiday. Studies of visitor satisfaction with guided package tours are often conducted in developed economies, on coach tours in cities, and therefore less is known about guided package tours in developing economies where the principle attraction is wildlife and nature. This thesis investigates visitor satisfaction with guided package tours that feature safaris in the northern tourist circuit of Tanzania. The northern tourist circuit is the largest tourist destination in Tanzania that attracts more that 80% of international visitors in the country.   Quantitative research method is used in this study together with importance-performance analysis. Importance-performance analysis provides a structure for data analysis and the interpretation of research findings. This thesis explores the relative importance of different components of guided package tours; visitor satisfaction with different components of the guided package tour; the relationship between importance and performance of different components of the guided package tour; and the relationship between visitor satisfaction with the tour guide and overall satisfaction with the tour experience.   This research demonstrates that all components of the guided package tour are important to visitors, and visitors are very satisfied with the performance of the tour providers. Attractions, tour guides and transportation are considered very important and very satisfying components of the guided package tour in the northern tourist circuit. Visitor satisfaction with the tour guide makes the largest contribution to overall satisfaction with the tour experience. Similarly, visitor satisfaction with other components of the guided package tour contributes to overall satisfaction with the tour experience.   The findings of this study provide a better understanding of visitor satisfaction with guided package tours that feature safaris, and the application of importance-performance analysis in the study of visitor satisfaction in a rural wildlife area. The study provides several practical suggestions for guided package tour providers in the northern tourist circuit.</p>

Today, electronic commerce (e-commerce) has been utilised as a rapid vehicle to transform the world into an information society. In the business environment, e-commerce has made considerable inroads not only into large organisations but also the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, SMEs are not adopting e-commerce with same speed as their larger counterparts. This slow growth has been attributed to various adoption barriers, which have been well documented in numerous research studies. While several recent studies have begun examining the relationship between the perceptions of adoption barriers in developed economies, the relationship between the perceptions of these barriers has not been fully examined in developing economies. This paper examines the correlation and underlying factors of barriers to e-commerce (as perceived by SME owner/managers) in a developing economy (Indonesia). It then compares these with SME owner/manager perceptions from a developed economy (Sweden). The study showed that there are differences in the groupings and priorities of barriers to e-commerce between the two locations. Most importantly, however, was the finding that while Swedish respondents were more concerned with technical issues, the Indonesian respondents were more concerned with organisational barriers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide the initial evidence of the relationship between the community and public-private partnership (PPP) projects by focusing on community engagement, trust and performance. Design/methodology/approach This study is cross sectional and correlational and it uses project level data that were collected by means of a questionnaire from a sample of 47 PPP projects in Uganda. Findings Results indicate that trust and community engagement are significantly associated with the performance of PPP projects. Research limitations/implications This study was cross-sectional, and thus monitoring changes in behaviour over time was not possible. The study used a quantitative research approach and this limits respondents from expressing their feelings fully. The study was conducted in Uganda and it is possible that the results of this study can be generalized to developing countries with environments similar to that of Uganda. Practical implications The results are important for PPP projects to understand the role that trust and community engagement play in as far as the performance of PPP projects is concerned. Originality/value Whilst there have been a number of studies on the performance of PPP projects, this study provides initial empirical evidence on the influence of trust and community engagement on the performance of PPP projects using evidence from PPP projects of an African developing economy – Uganda.

The aim of this study was to investigate how combining internal and external knowledge sources (KS) may influence product and process innovation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from developing economies in order to improve their financial performances (FPs). Previous research mostly supported that internal KS influence innovation directly as well as indirectly, moderating the relationship between external KS and innovation performance (IP), with this moderation being more prominent in the case of high-technology firms. These studies also supported that innovation influences FP more strongly in this type of firm. The present study proposes that, in developing countries, the opposite occurs. The moderation relationship of internal KS on the relationship between external KS and IP would be stronger in low-technology firms, as well as the positive effect of innovation on FP. We tested our propositions using a sample of 1551 Brazilian manufacturing SMEs controlling by the technological intensity of the industry and confirmed a good part of the proposed hypotheses.

Identifying the importance and satisfaction of hotel attributes in the eyes of tourists and their role in building customer loyalty is critical for improving the service quality. Therefore, in our study, customers' importance and performance perceptions regarding the services offered by accommodation businesses were examined in terms of customers’ nationalities. Our research has two main objectives.  The first objective is to determine the importance and performance perceptions of the services provided by the hotels according to the nationalities of the customers using the using importance-performance analysis (IPA) model and to compare the perceptions of importance-performance according to nationality. The second aim is to determine the effect of satisfaction perceptions regarding hotel services on customer loyalty according to customer nationality. The research was designed as a survey-based quantitative research methodology. Convenience sampling was used, which is a non-random sampling method. Data were obtained from 1153 German, Russian, and Turkish tourists accommodating in five-star hotels in Alanya, Turkey. A gap analysis was conducted using pairwise t-tests to evaluate whether the importance and performance perceptions of the participants differed. IPA was conducted with attributes being graphically displayed on the I-P grids. The impact of hotel service satisfaction on customer loyalty was investigated using regression analysis. The research findings reveal that customers' performance perceptions and services attach importance to differ significantly by nationality. And also, it was concluded that satisfaction with the services provided in accommodation businesses has a significant effect on customer loyalty and that this effect differs in customer groups. Determining satisfaction factors affecting customer loyalty according to customer characteristics make a significant contribution to service quality improvement. In this context, the research results provide practical and theoretical contributions to how customer satisfaction and customer loyalty can be improved according to market groups.
