Over the last three decades, the disruptive quality of urban and social restructuring processes in Turkey has been intensified by the government’s decision to embrace the concept of urban transformation as a tool to boost the Turkish economy and development. In this respect, many cities have experienced a rapid urban transformation, practicing more of a top to down approach in implementing an urban planning and design, and at the same time undervaluing the potential of a participatory process for a common future and for the improvement of the quality of social and urban life. The article examines the process of “social and spatial restructuring” for the old-city housings of the city of Istanbul, as part of a larger urban transformation phenomenon. The research comparatively analyses three different urban transformation projects from the city of Istanbul's historically valued Golden Horn area and focuses on missions, actors and roles of the projects in terms of the social and spatial restructuring phases. As all three cases in this respect reclaims an upgrading of the quality of urban environment of the historic neighbourhoods; the mission is to expose the local multidimensional structure of these transformations via comparative discussion of their potentials, capabilities and limits in respect to the dynamics of urban transformation and community participation.

It is a common fact that the confinement and to become unfunctional of the historical factories due to they have remained behind of technological improvement, not been managed effectively and polluted to the environment. However, their falling into disuse the demolition and the destruction of these buildings cannot be accepted. A lot of factories in Türkiye that have been able to reach today from the industrial background had been demolished for their land value, and a few of them had been re-functioned by transforming. These plants as contributes to the economic development of the countries and bears the stamp of the past, also could be re-evaluated and transferred to future generations by preserving their original identities. With the transformation of a historical plant, not only an industrial heritage would be protected but also this act would contribute to the economic development and cultural significance of the urban, and improve the quality of life. On this issue, there are lots of examples in Western countries. In this study, a succesful transformation sample from Canada-Toronto has been handled. In Distillery Region where has a significant role in the establishment, enrichment and physical embodiment of the city of Toronto, the regeneration/transformation process has been achieved thus the region has been redounded to tourism industry. In the study, the development of Distilery and its meaning for the urban is stated, the transformation process and its effect on urban is discussed and at this issue some suggestions are made while determining the deficiencies in Türkiye.

In the current era of such a complex and diverse, linear thinking has no longer a reasonable explanation of complex phenomena in various fields, thus the non-linear thinking is coming to the fore. While the city is a complex nonlinear system, in such a digital information age characterized by technology, non-linear thinking must replace the original simple linear thinking in urban planning and design process. The purpose of this study is to analyze new urban planning visions by using the core ideas of the nonlinear scientific theory. The article mainly analyzes the nonlinear theory and the relations between it and urban planning, including the nonlinear theory of chaos theory, fractal theory, the inherent randomness theory, thus forming a new concept of urban planning and design.

The quality of the urban environment determines a lasting relationship between a man and his place of residence. Sustainable management of the urban spaces is crucial as it directly affects their quality. The article analyses the results of the sustainability regarding spatial, socio-economic, technical and environmental aspects, which are one of the many conditions that contribute to the proper functioning of urban life. They also influence the quality of life and residence in the urban environment. There are different ways of expressing the development of the cities defined by specific indicators. They focus mainly on development of the quality of life - social, economic and environmental development. The sustainable urban design is related to issues connected with the form and spatial management. This topic is presented on the example of the city of Oświęcim - the Old Town district with the surrounding area.

The urban plaza is an important constituent of the big system of the city. It makes a prominent contribution to improve the overall environment quality of the city. With different users and using behaviors, the planning and design of urban plazas with different qualities are also different. Based on environmental behavior studies and POE (post occupancy evaluation), the present thesis takes the Municipal Plaza and the Commercial Plaza in Jinniu District as investigating subjects. From June 30th to July 10th in 2011, the investigation was carried out for user groups of different ages, different genders and different activity preferences during different time intervals in working days and at weekends. The researcher carries out a comparative study on using time features, user group features, spatial behavioral features of users, and activity expectations and behavioral modes of users. The researcher explains the importance of paying attention to spatial environment and the humanized design of user behavioral need. The researcher also points out its realistic significance for plaza construction in China.

The term ‘palimpsest’ refers to medieval manuscripts that have been multiply erased and inscribed with the overlapping texts of successive scribes. More recently and amongst academics, the term has become a metaphor for describing the city, including both the physical urban form as well as memories and experiences of everyday urban life. The palimpsest offers a way of thinking not only about urban transformation, where new and repurposed structures exist alongside the old, but also changes in how the city is experienced, or how life stories are written upon and rewrite existing spaces. This paper focuses on the latter. Though the palimpsest metaphor has been used to describe material transformations of the urban, the question that this paper raises is: how can the notion of the palimpsest inform methodological approaches to researching how the city is lived and seen? Collaborative, digital storytelling that combines images, narration, and sound can provide a method that emphasises the polyvocality and multi-temporality that the term palimpsest implies. A palimpsestic approach to digital storytelling, as a visual and narrative method, gestures at places as open to future readings and inscriptions. This is relevant to all cities, but perhaps most obviously in cities where historical narratives, memories of violence, and questions over the future political direction of the country in which the city is located are all highly contested. To illustrate these points, this paper draws upon research conducted with young people in Beirut, Lebanon as part of a wider study about how youth experience citizenship and belonging in divided societies.

Extensive urban growth is often considered an uncoordinated process creating chaotic and fragmented suburban landscape. Such negative attitude is widespread among urban researchers and planners. But it contradicts with the very nature of the phenomenon – suburban sprawl is partly encouraged by people, who keep settling there due to a better quality of housing. This one and some other contradictions motivate more detailed morphological studies of the suburban fabric. This paper describes a research model, which is based on the three fundamental components of urban morphological research (form, resolution and time), and discusses the possibilities of its practical application for morphological examination of suburban settlements in Lithuania. Suggested research model is versatile and suitable for dealing with various morphological research problems of modern urban fabric, such as distinguishing different suburban tissues, analyzing their formation patterns, identifying their specific characteristics. As shown in the article, morphological knowledge can be integrated into the urban planning and design processes and be useful in guiding sustainable development of suburban settlements. Santrauka Ekstensyvi miestų plėtra dažnai laikoma nekoordinuota, kuriančia chaotišką ir fragmentišką priemiestinį kraštovaizdį. Toks plačiai tarp miesto tyrėjų ir planuotojų įsivyravęs bei neigiamų reikšmių turintis priemiestinės plėtros traktavimas prieštarauja pačiai reiškinio prigimčiai – ekstensyvią miesto plėtrą iš dalies lemia dėl geresnės būsto kokybės noriai ten besikuriantys žmonės. Šis ir kiti prieštaravimai skatina detaliau analizuoti priemiestines urbanistines struktūras. Tam parankūs urbanistinės morfologijos metodai, kurie taikomi tiriant priemiestinių gyvenamųjų vietovių urbanistinės struktūros formavimosi dėsningumus, nustatant išskirtinius jų bruožus. Šiame straipsnyje, remiantis urbanistinės morfologijos tyrimų srities tradicijomis ir tendencijomis, pateikiamas pagrindiniais morfologinės analizės principais pagrįstas tyrimų modelis, kuris, kaip rodo nagrinėjami priemiestinių urbanizuotų struktūrų morfologinių studijų pavyzdžiai, būtų parankus tirti Lietuvos didmiesčių ekstensyvios plėtros formuojamus priemiestinius darinius morfologiniu aspektu.

Abstract THE CITIZENS TOPOPHILIA AND THE NATURAL URBAN PATRIMONY: COIMBRA’S CASE STUDY This paper analyzes the importance of natural patrimony in the urban environment, under the prism of geography. The main objective of this study is to understand how nature is perceived in the city of Coimbra (Portugal) and the role that green areas and natural patrimony has in the quality of urban life. To achieve these objectives, this article discusses the conceptual argument about environmental perception, topophilia and the nature in the city. For this, it was used two different procedures: (1) Field analysis on the city of Coimbra with purpose to setting up a photographic database, to verify the presence, conservation and relationship to the natural patrimony inserted in urban environment; (2) Investigation through interviews in two neighborhoods of the city – Vale das Flores and Monte Formoso. The data revealed that the perception and the topophilic relationship to urban green areas are marked by the contradiction between practice and discourse. It was concluded that the presence of natural patrimony in the urban environment still present itself as a secondary issue. Moreover, it was concluded that to strengthen this relationship symbolically and/or functionally the natural patrimony must be present throughout all the continuous urban areas and should not be restricted to elite neighborhoods or parks.

Sustainable urban mobility adds a new dimension to the circulation of goods and people in the city: sustainability. The increasing number of individual motor vehicles is an accurate urban mobility diagnostic, by highlighting strengths and weaknesses, to guide public policies aimed at improving the quality of urban life. In this paper, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Index has been discussed and then applied to evaluate the sustainable urban mobility in Campinas (SP, Brazil). For the period 2010-2014, the index shows a persistent insufficiency in the sustainable urban mobility of this city, even if there was a slight improvement in the period. This is due to the environmental dimension, considering the increasing fuel consumption. It is therefore necessary to look for possible solutions involving primarily collective transportation and non-motorized one, especially for short distance.
