The teachers’ domination was also seen in the length of the turns. The teachers normally had extended turn comprising one clause or more, while students’ contributions were normally short consisting of one word, one phrase, and one clause was the longest in each turn. Beside the two indicators, the teachers’ power and domination were seen in controlling the topic, giving instruction, asking close questions and providing correction. Key words: conversation, classroom discourse, power and domination

Abstract Based on Appraisal Theory and critical discourse analysis, this corpus-assisted study examines how China Daily (CD) and South China Morning Post (SCMP) used appraisal resources to express their respective stances towards the anti-extradition bill movement. The results show that both newspapers employed negative resources of Judgement and the predication strategy to convey their stance, but SCMP seemed more refrained in the use of appraisal resources. CD openly stated that any illegal actions should be punished, and SCMP also criticised these actions. Besides, CD emphasized the consequences brought by violence and attributed the breakout of the protests to the opposition camp’s political intention for their own benefit, whereas SCMP highlighted Hong Kongers’ widespread opposition to the bill. These differences in language use and stance might be explained by the different press systems they respectively belong to and related to their respective historical and socio-political contexts.

This article investigates the Chinese translations of several English news reports on China’s human rights issue carried in Reference News, a Chinese authoritative state-run newspaper devoted to translating foreign reports for the Chinese reader, and aims to establish how evaluative resources are resorted to by the translators to facilitate ideologically different positioning in presenting events and identifying participants in the translated news. The translations are compared with their English source texts using Appraisal Theory (Martin and White 2005) as the micro analytical framework and Fairclough’s (1995a, 1995b) three-dimension model of Critical Discourse Analysis as the explanatory framework.

This research seeks to investigate public reaction towards the ordinance that allowed transgender people to use bathroom in correspondence to their identified gender. The article explores the reaction through observing comments expressed by public in comment sections of news articles from Abcnews (abcnews.com), Usatoday (usatoday.com), and Washington Post (washingtonpost.com). Comments expressed by public in the comment section contain their own belief and ideology which often clashes with one another. The conflict resulted in the verbal interchange of ideas (discourse) that are expressed through agreements and arguments. Drawing on qualitative method, this paper critically analyzes these discourses appearing in the comment section. The commenters’ belief in the context of transgender bathroom ordinance is correlated with the work of Michel Foucault that put focus on the systematical relation between power and its subject(s). This paper argues that heteronormativity is the power driving the subjects in reacting to the case of transgender bathroom ordinance.

Abstract. In globalization era, hoax has been widely spread on social media and disturbs the well-built relationship of Indonesian people. Even it often breaks the unity of people. Lack of knowledge in how to identify hoax has let readers be hypnotized to believe that the news is real. This study is aimed to develop "KAPAK HOAKS (HOAX AXE)" model (Reader's independence in analyzing hoax content). This study uses the theory of CDA model of Fairclough by Umar Fauzan (2013). The study method used in this article is qualitative method with critical linguistics study approach. The authors of this study have collected analysis theories of critical literature able to be used to analyze data of hoax circulating on social media. The analysis is conducted by matching data corpus with the chosen theory. Through the analysis, the authors have identified language aspects supporting self-checking improvement. It is also mentioned by Eriyanto (2001) about hoax analysis. To reach perfection, this study considers that the future research needs to involve response test on social media readers' positive independence in responding hoax. Keywords: corpus, hoax, linguistics, semiotics, social mediaAbstrak.

AbstractThe present study aims at investigating the Arabic translations of several English news reports on Saudi Iranian conflict to show translators draw on their ideological positioning in introducing events. In the present study, Appraisal Theory and Fairclough's trilateral model of Critical Discourse Analysis have been used to compare the English source texts with their translations into Arabic. The examples have been selected from BBC news reports published in the BBC Website at different dates. The major purpose of this study is to merely highlight the linguistic features of news reports about the Saudi Iranian conflict.
