The article raises the topical issue of the transition to distance learning, when Russian universities in the fall of 2020 were forced to re-apply this format. The article shows the difficult situation that has devel-oped in the Timiryazev Academy in the fall of 2020. Under the threat of the spread of Covid-19, the univer-sity's management was forced to make a decision to transfer students to distance learning. The author draws attention to the fact that interest in the topic of distance learning in our country has existed for a long time. However, it has only recently become particularly acute. The article analyzes the results of a sociological survey devoted to the transfer of 1st-year students to a distance learning format. It is shown what opportuni-ties and advantages, in the opinion of students, this transition provided them. The analysis of the shortcom-ings of distance learning named by students is carried out. Special attention is paid to student proposals aimed at improving it. A critical analysis of these proposals is given. The main scientific result: it is shown that the transition to distance learning did not become fatal for students of the Timiryazev Academy. Most of the first-year students took this transition as a forced measure and were able to adapt to the current situation.

Like most university students worldwide, the engineering students at the School of Information Sciences (ESI) have to deal with their school closure and the new paradigm of distance learning. Despite efforts made by the administration and the teachers to accompany students, an internal survey conducted by the end of October 2021 revealed that almost all students, especially first-year ones, did not accept distance learning. This paper describes our experience to improve students’ satisfaction with distance learning by involving them in their courses’ design process. Four courses were concerned by the experience and were designed following the ADDIE method. Last-year students participated in the ADDIE analysis step, while the first-year students participated in the last step by evaluating the co-created courses. Courses were co-created with students as most of them got involved in the ADDIE development step and enriched courses by realizing extras activities. Results showed that students were highly satisfied with courses taught in the context of this study.

The relevance of the research is determined by the need to find new methods of teaching a foreign language in the context of the transition to an online learning environment, which will contribute to ensuring an appropriate level of development of future specialists' communicative foreign competence. The purpose of the study is to determine the features of the development of students' phonetic competence in online German classes on the example of the pedagogical activity of teachers of the I.I. Mechnikov Odessa National University. The study of the selected problems was carried out in two stages based on logical and system approaches using general scientific methods, including the method of analysis, synthesis, comparison, concretisation, systematisation, and the method of analogies. It was identified that the modern educational space is characterised by the digitalisation of the educational process, as a result of which approaches to teaching a foreign language are changing. The paper considers foreign practices of using multimedia technologies in foreign language classes to form students' auditory and pronunciation skills in online learning. The necessity of changing the conventional methods of teaching an introductory phonetic course in a foreign language according to the requirements of distance learning was substantiated. It was established that the key factor in the development of auditory and pronunciation skills in online German classes is the use of video and audio materials (video conferences and messengers), animated images of articulation of sounds, as well as a system of exercises for the practical application of the theoretical knowledge obtained. On the example of teaching an introductory phonetic course in German for first-year students of the Department of International Relations of the I.I. Mechnikov Odessa National University, the basic principles of using mobile applications in the process of distance learning, including Padlet, LearningApps, Voki, PicVoice, and ChatterPix are described. The prospects for further research lie in the practice of using the online environment of an introductory German phonetic course among students of related specialisations

This article presents a comparative study of the personal adaptive capabilities of Chinese students studying in Chinese, British and Russian universities. The study involved 224 Chinese first-year students who formed 3 groups: Group 1, 96 first-year students studying in China; Group 2, 100 Chinese first-year students studying in Russia; Group 3, 28 Chinese first-year students studying in the UK. The instruments employed were: a Personality questionnaire (adapted Rogers-Dymond method), the Big Five and the Method of studying the Research Potential of students (Bordovskaia et al., 2017). The study found that for all Chinese students, the general predictors of adaptation to university education are "openness" and "agreeableness". The differences are that the personal resources for the adaptation of Chinese students in Chinese and Russian universities are "research potential", in the British university "neuroticism", "extraversion" and "conscientiousness (self-control)”. The findings point up the conditions for ensuring the future academic, social and communicative success of Chinese students in the educational environments of British, Russian and Chinese universities, and allow one to predict the reasons for the difficulties faced by individual students.

Despite the increasing numbers of transfer students, particularly those transferring from two- to four-year institutions, campus programs and services continue to center on assisting first-year students who are entering higher education for the first time. This chapter brings transfer students, an often “forgotten” population, to light through the following: a review of the scholarship and research on community college transfer student transition and success, an examination of factors that affect that transition, and a description of innovative practices that respond to the need of this growing population. The information in this chapter can be used to develop campus programs and services to assist with the transfer student transition to four-year colleges and universities.

This study investigates the library experiences of transfer students at an urban commuter campus in the United States with approximately 20,000 students, 8,500 of whom previously attended another institution. Using a mixed methods approach, we surveyed and interviewed transfer students to gain a better understanding of their use of libraries and their comfort with locating information both before and after transferring between post-secondary institutions. Our findings indicate that there is not a standard “transfer student experience,” although usage of library resources at past institutions does affect students’ perceptions. Subsequently, librarians should develop outreach efforts and information literacy instruction that go beyond first-year students and acknowledge the research skills transfer students bring with them.
