Variations in seismic retrofit design of cable-stayed bridges of different sizes

<p>There are three cable-stayed bridges in Nishi-Seto Expressway, the westernmost route of Honshu- Shikoku Expressway; Shin-Onomichi Bridge (maximum span of 215 m), Ikuchi Bridge (center span of 490 m), and Tatara Bridge (center span of 890 m). The results of seismic analyses of the bridges revealed the considerable sway-mode vibrations in longitudinal direction, and seismic devices such as viscous dampers and stoppers were found to be necessary to mitigate the above vibrations. In this paper, the vibration characteristics of the cable-stayed bridges of different sizes and the difference in the seismic retrofit design for the bridges are presented.</p>

<p>In the cable-stayed bridges the primary cost components of the load-bearing material, in the longitudinal direction of the bridge, are the cables. The longer the bridge, the higher the share of the costs of the load-bearing material. The quantity of the cables and the cost optimized cable and tower topology can be reliably solved, already in very early design stages, using a simple calculation method proposed in this article. The cables are considered as a curtain structure and the cable forces are calculated for the permanent load balance. The solutions are performed mathematically by using integral calculus based on a force length method and a unit bridge concept. The results provide a good idea of the optimum pylon height for both one-pylon and two-pylon bridges. The optimum pylon height depends on the span ratio and the chosen cable system.</p>

Drying phenomena of oil palm frond waste as agriculture waste was observed using simple batch oven dryer. The operation temperatures were 50, 80 and 120 C. The sample of oil palm frond was weighed periodically every 30 minutes. Moisture content, shrinkage phenomena and drying kinetic model were investigated to the difference operation temperature. Experimental result exhibited that temperature influent significantly to the drying rate. The water transport controlled by diffuse mechanism. Shrinkage occurred in radial direction and decreased the size to almost 65% from initial size. In longitudinal direction almost is not change of size.

By examining seismic retrofit experience with three buildings in Seattle, important practical issues regarding the underlying economic, political, and social conflicts are explored. The philosophy of seismic retrofit and its resulting consequences for life safety, building usefulness both before and after seismic events, and the economic consequences of retrofit are examined in light of the professional and regulatory atmosphere. While a great deal of information is generated nationally in the field of seismic retrofit, its assimilation by the practising professional and regulatory official is incomplete and uncoordinated. The work proposes, therefore, a seismic retrofit design philosophy for discussion and possible use as a premise for development of codes. The proposed philosophy coordinates the economic, social, and life safety aspects of seismic retrofit in a way that meets the needs of designers and regulators who are currently forced to make social policy in their everyday design interactions.

Longitudinal force-length relationship of the rat esophagus was studied in vitro in three age groups: 1 mo, 3 mo, and 12 mo. The length of maximum force development (MFD) occurs at 1.4-1.5 times the in vivo length for all age groups. The active force developed at MFD increases markedly with age. The difference in the active forces in the 3-mo and 12-mo age groups is due to differences in cross section because the active stress of the esophagus in the longitudinal direction is approximately equal for the two age groups. The active stress in the 1-mo-old rats is lower than in the 3-mo-old rats, suggesting an increased contractility of the esophagus with age in this period of development.


The estimates of the thickness of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments found in the western Channel show that the deposition of these sediments was controlled by two independent processes. (1) In the longitudinal direction, the displacement of maximum sedimentation, from east to west is entirely dependent on the opening of the North Atlantic. (2) In a transverse direction, it is probable that the difference of subsidence between the two sides of the Aurigny—Ouessant fault originated from the fracturing of the original Atlantic rift in the Western Approaches. Transverse compressions and extensions have disturbed the continual depression of the Channel towards the west.
