The article analyses the little-studied part of the prose legacy of Ulas Samchuk — a book of memoirs ‘Five past twelve: notes at a run’. Ontological approach to the text allowes to outline the world-wide changes of the writer in the conditions of war and dehumanization of society. With the help of the imagology method, the peculiarities of Ulas Samchuk’s attempt to understand the Other (German) who became a victim of Nazi ideology, tolerance of racial superiority, but ultimately defeated. The writer relies on Western European philosophy, in particular, the ideas of O. Spengler, K. Jaspers, J. Ortega y Gasset, which refers to the decline of western culture in connection with the development of civilization, which seeks for hegemony over mankind. An important role is devoted to reflections on the role and place of the Ukrainian nation in the transcendental epic of redistribution of the world.

The influences of task type on search of the World Wide Web using search engines without limitation of search domain were investigated. 9 graduate and undergraduate students studying psychology (1 woman and 8 men, M age = 25.0 yr., SD = 2.1) participated. Their performance to manipulate the search engines on a closed task with only one answer were compared with their performance on an open task with several possible answers. Analysis showed that the number of actions was larger for the closed task ( M = 91) than for the open task ( M = 46.1). Behaviors such as selection of keywords (averages were 7.9% of all actions for the closed task and 16.7% for the open task) and pressing of the browser's back button (averages were 40.3% of all actions for the closed task and 29.6% for the open task) were also different. On the other hand, behaviors such as selection of hyperlinks, pressing of the home button, and number of browsed pages were similar for both tasks. Search behaviors were influenced by task type when the students searched for information without limitation placed on the information sources.

The present study is complied with the topical theme “name in the text” and devoted to the problems of how precedent names as the text-forming elements function in the poems and prose works of Marina Tsvetaeva within the framework of free indirect discourse. The authors study various methods and functions of personal names. The authors make conclusions concerning the frequency of precedent names and the specific character of intertextual elements in Tsvetaeva’s text, which, on the one hand, complicates the perception of the text, but on the other hand, promotes including both the poet and the reader into the world-wide cultural and spiritual environment. The ways of introducing the name and the persona, especially within free indirect discourse, specifies the further existence of the name / or its absence in the text.

Developing application systems that use the World Wide Web (WWW, Web) as an application platform suffers from the absence of disciplined approaches to develop such Web-applications. Besides, the Web’s implementation model makes it difficult to apply well-known process models to the development and evolution of Web-applications. On the other hand, component-based software development appears as a promising approach that meets essential requirements of developing and evolving highly dynamic Web-applications. With respect to Web-applications, its main objective is to build Web-applications from (standardized) components. Founded on these insights and based on a dedicated component model, we propose an approach to a disciplined specification of components.

Web designers attempt to draw attention to important links by making them distinctive. However, when users are asked to find specific items, they often overlook these distinctive banners. The irony of “banner blindness” is that the user who really wants to find the information the designer has highlighted is not likely to do so. In the experiments reported here, banner blindness is reproduced under controlled conditions. Banners located higher on the page and therefore further from the other page links were missed more often than banners located lower on the page and closer to the other links. Banners were missed more often when located on pages containing links to categories than when located on pages with links to specific items. Users saw banners hardly at all when clicking a banner was not required to accomplish a task.

Popular music, like all manifestations of popular culture, lives on in spite of recurring criticisms that cast it as somehow inauthentic. In fact, defences against this discounting are built into popular music (for example, the Rolling Stones' classic: ‘It's only rock 'n' roll but I like it’) and built in, as well, to the identities of those who make the music a part of their lives, be they players, producers, consumers or critics. On the other hand, so-called classical music, not unlike other manifestations of Western European art culture, lives on in spite of popular music and provides the touchstone of authenticity that creates the defensive popular response. The ideas I am advancing here are intended to allow the players in this authenticity contest to be recognised as evidence of unique historical circumstances: recognised, that is, not only as stock dramatists of ethnocentrism, but as indicators of long-term changes in music cultures in all parts of the world.

The paper calls for a paradigm shift in the definition and approach to architecture to reverse the erosion of its societal relevance, and the loss of its identity as a discipline. The paper contends that this development originated with the Renaissance when architecture evolved from a craft into an art, and the pursuit of beauty became the foremost ideal: the aspect that distinguishes architecture from “mere building”. Ever since, architecture has tried-and failed- to solve the dilemma of aesthetics: the integration of utility, technology and beauty. However, neither beauty, nor the question of aesthetics, are really the problem. The real issue is that architecture is, ultimately, about more than beauty or aesthetics: it is about our life and our existence; about creating a place for our being in the world. Architecture is, thus, grounded in an ontological paradigm rather than an aesthetic one. This has far-reaching, theoretical implications. The paper then proceeds to delineate some of the premises fundamental to an ontological approach to architecture, based on the notion that architecture makes possible the congruence between human and natural order, between our inner and our outer world. Beauty is present when one resonates and reveals itself through the other.

In the article the author examines humanism criticism that does not result in post-humanism. The author shows that post-humanism is the reaction to the humanistic idea of man as the center of the world that was typical for west-European philosophy. At the same time post-humanism doe not negate the logic of humanism, but extrapolates it to the whole of non-human world. On the contrary, Russian philosophy is free from the original premises of humanism and it views the crisis of humanism in a different perspective. The author shows that Russian philosophy is not anthropocentric, but on the contrary – anthropologic. Its feature consists in viewing the man in the perspective of his ontological expansion. The idea of such ontological expansion is based on the philosophy of inequality. When west-European philosophy today conceptualizes total world democracy on the other side of man, Russian philosophy turns to the idea of metaphysical gaps that substantiate the idea of man’s freedom and anthropological necessity of self-restrictions.

The advancement of web services paved the way to the accumulation of a tremendous amount of information into the world wide web. The huge pile of information makes it hard for the user to get the required information at the right time. Therefore, to get the right item, recommender systems are emphasized. Recommender algorithms generally act on the user information to render recommendations. In this scenario, when a new user enters the system, it fails in rendering recommendation due to unavailability of user information, resulting in a new user problem. So, in this paper, a movie recommender algorithm is constructed to address the prevailing new user cold start problem by utilizing only movie genres. Unlike other techniques, in the proposed work, familiarity of each movie genre is considered to compute the genre significance value. Based on genre significance value, genre similarity is correlated to render recommendations to a new user. The evaluation of the proposed recommender algorithm on real-world datasets shows that the algorithm performs better than the other similar approaches.

About half the length of the * oceanic ’ rise-ridge system is centred in ocean basins. On the other hand, almost the whole system is approximately disposed in circles around continental shields. Exceptional heating of the system is indicated by high heat flow and the extrusion of extraordinary volumes of flood basalts. The concentration of volcanoes, however, is little greater than normal for ocean basins. Longitudinal normal faulting and transverse wrench faulting are characteristic of the system. Both types formed early in the life of the system and are still active. Wrench faults offset belts of normal faulting and the crests of rises and ridges in many places but are not themselves known to be offset by normal faults. The ancient Darwin Rise has subsided in the southwestern Pacific. Its history differs in some respects from other rises although it too was heated and faulted. A hypothesis of origin of the system is briefly discussed.

The main problem of the research is the definition of expressiveness as a methodological principle of modern culture. The research materials were the results of investigations of Russian and foreign philosophers, culturologists, literary critics. The ontological approach allowed treating the expressiveness problem as something that assumes meeting the Other, as the expression of focusing on the Other. Moisei Kagan’s synergetic and systems approach contributes to the determination of the methodological significance of the expressiveness problem. This approach helps reveal the spirit of the transformations in modern culture, identify the connection between its different forms, and perceive the content of culture expression in the 21th century. The author notes that expressiveness gives an idea of how a new understanding of the relationship between the world and man forms. The substantiation of expressiveness is the basis for the transformation of modern culture. It is argued that in the existing humanitarian paradigm, when the consequences of a person’s self-expression in the world are ambiguous and an objective view cannot claim to be the world’s foremost authority, expressiveness is the condition for self-expression in the world, and it provides the opportunity to follow the transformation of self-expression in modern cultural practices. Reflection on expressiveness in modern culture is connected with social creativity, which brings the problem out of linguistics and art history towards a larger axiological context. The analysis of the problem of expressiveness in the humanities has made it possible to single out the following schools: artistic aspects of expressiveness (S. M. Volkonsky, S. M. Eisenstein); linguistic and literary aspects of linguistic expression (Yu. M. Lotman, A. A. Potebnya, E. Sapir, A. Hansen-Loeve, et al.); existentialist and philosophical perspective of expressiveness (M. M. Bakhtin, A. F. Losev, V. A. Podoroga, et al.). The connection with the philosophy of art and the history of philosophy creates new perspectives for the study of methodological aspects that influence the modern humanitarian paradigm. Reference to the concepts of B. Croce (expressiveness as a genius expression in its primary form), S. Langer (symbolic expression of feelings), T. Adorno (expressiveness as a criticism of the inexpressible and recognition of frank expression), V. S. Solovyov (expressiveness as an expression of unity), P. A. Florensky (expressiveness as an expression of antinomic cultural phenomena), A. F. Losev (expressiveness as a human dimension) allowed classifying the main approaches to the problem of expressiveness and defining its categorical status.
