One of the obstacles in learning English is ignorance in the use of distinguishing functions of part of speech, verbal and nominal sentences, and tenses. This article describes the application of the Sorogan method in learning English for beginners, where for many years this method is still being used in learning Arabic in Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. Descriptive design works to explain the use of this method. The population and samples were obtained from students majoring in English Education Department of University PGRI Adi Buana Campus Blitar. The results of the questionnaire display that students feel engaged in the implementation of Sorogan.

Abstract. Industrial revolution 4.0 era which is also called as disruptive era gives many benefits for several aspects especially in education. It becomes easier for the teacher to use any kinds of media for teaching English and for the students to find English materials by themselves. The recent students of English Education Department IAIN Kudus belong to generation Z students. As generation Z students who live in 4.0 era, they are able to access many kinds of information or knowledge and improve their English competences from any resources easily. This paper aims to identify the way of the generation Z learn English, the difficulties encountered by them in learning English, and the solutions or suggestions to overcome the difficulties. This study employed mixed methods research. In conducting this research, the researchers used observation, open-ended questionnaire and documentation to collect the data. The participants were 39 students of English Education Department at IAIN Kudus. The results showed that 60% students use gadgets to study English, 15% use books, and 25% use both of them. Meanwhile, 50% students have difficulties in speaking, 10% in listening, 6% in reading, 17% in writing, and 17% in those four competences. Some solutions or suggestions were revealed to resolve the difficulties. The solutions were extended for each language competence.Keywords: English Competence, Generation Z, IAIN KudusAbstrak. Era revolusi industri 4.0, yang juga dikenal dengan era disruptif, memberikan banyak keuntungan dalam berbagai aspek khususnya dalam pendidikan. Hal ini akan memudahkan guru untuk menggunakan berbagai jenis media untuk mengajar Bahasa Inggris dan juga bagi mahasiswa untuk mencari materi Bahasa Inggris sendiri. Mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris IAIN Kudus juga termasuk mahasiswa generasi Z. Sebagai mahasiswa generasi Z yang tinggal di era 4.0, mereka mampu mengakses berbagai macam informasi atau pengetahuan untuk memperbaiki kompetensi mereka dari berbagai sumber dengan mudah. Paper ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi cara bagaimana generasi Z belajar Bahasa Inggris, kesulitan-kesulitan yang dihadapi mereka, dan solusi atau saran untuk menghadapi kesulitan tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran (mixed methods), dan dalam mengumpulkan data penulis menggunakan teknik observasi, kuesioner, dan dokumentasi. Peserta penelitian ini adalah 39 mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris IAIN Kudus. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa cara mereka belajar 60 % menggunakan gawai, 15 % menggunakan buku, dan 25 % menggunakan dua-duanya. 50 % mahasiswa mengalami kesulitan dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris, 10 % mendengarkan, 6 % dalam membaca, 17 % dalam menulis, dan 17 % mengalami kesulitan dalam keempat-empatnya. Beberapa solusi ditawarkan untuk menghadapi masalah tersebut, terutama di masing-masing keahlian berbahasa.Kata kunci: kompetensi bahasa Inggris, generasi Z, IAIN Kudus

The demands of English as an international language keep increasing along the time. Through time, the needs for learning English vary from for different purposes. Then the realization came to the surface that not all groups of learners need to learn general English. Thus, the design of English courses is developed for specific purposes as they are best known as English for Specific Purpose (ESP). The needs for learning English in specific purpose enable English teachers to pose themselves in different challenges other than in formal education. This paper aims at investigating the motivations of some English Education Department graduates for working as English instructors at English courses. The qualitative data was obtained by conducting the interview on some English instructors in Swift English School in Yogyakarta. After analyzing the data, it was found that despite its challenges, some English Education graduates prefer to work in English courses to regular schools. With all of the privileges of working in an English course, some general motivations underlie their working preferences. Among of the factors are flexible teaching situation, more chances for improving personal competence, higher salary and moderate career prospect.

In teaching English, a teacher should stimulate students’ activeness to engage in a class. One way to do it is by giving reinforcement. A good reinforcement has a significant role in the students’ speaking activeness. It can be a source of students’ motivation to learn and in this case, their activeness to speak in class. This research aims to discover what reinforcement that triggers students’ willingness to communicate. The result is intended to discover the effects of teacher’s reinforcement towards students’ willingness to communicate. The data for this research is collected by the photovoice method in which more practical is needed by collaborating with SHOWeD in analyzing the data. The participants of this research are 28 college students, consisting 7 male students and 21 female students ranging from 19 to 21 years old in English Education Department who are currently attending college. Based on the data analysis, the finding of the research is teacher reinforcement in EFL classroom affect students’ willingness to communicate, particularly self-confidence, interpersonal motivation, and intergroup motivation. The research implied to help teachers to understand more about the way teacher’s reinforcement affect the students’ speaking activeness seen from the students’ perspective.

 Abstract The objective of the research to know the perception of fourth semester students of Universitas Muria Kudus  on the use social media in learning English. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research and the data was collected by the used of questionnaire. The participants are 50 students of English Education Department of Universitas Muria Kudus. The result showed social media have good perception for the fourth semester students of English Education Department of Universitas Muria Kudus. Social media have provide rich resource to learn English.                It is indicate that social media has positive contribution for learning English they are listening, reading, writing and speaking skill.

Teaching English as a foreign language in higher education becomes more challenging from year to year. Based on the learner and learning needs, nowadays, English should be taught in relation to the other fields of the study. The phenomena require a certain ‘scenario’ to support the students’ English mastery. In accordance to the condition, English Education Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan has a program to help the students improving their English skills called Peer-Assisted Learning Program PALP. As an official program in the department, PALP is managed professionally by the boards. However, developing the appropriate materials for the program still becomes one big question to everyone dealing with the program, especially the boards. It is a really challenging work to develop such informative and practical materials for the students joining the program. Thus, in this paper, the writer will discuss several theories as the basis in developing the materials for PALP. It will cover the information about PALP, learner needs, learning needs, criteria of good materials, material development, and materials evaluation/assessment.

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui orientasi motivasi dan sikap bahasa mahasiswa Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha terhadap bahasa Inggris dan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Sejumlah 70 mahasiswa tahun pertama di Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris tahun akademik 2014/2015 disurvei dengan menggunakan AMTB (Attitude, Motivation Test Battery) yaitu kuesioner yang diadaptasikan dari Gardner (1985) untuk mengetahui motivasi dan sikap bahasa, yang meliputi a) ketertarikan terhadap Bahasa Inggris, b) dukungan dari orang tua, c) intensitas motivasi, d) sikap terhadap pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, e) sikap terhadap penutur asli bahasa Inggris, f) orientasi integratif, g) keinginan untuk mempelajari bahasa Inggris, dan h) orientasi instrumental. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan inferensial. Berdasarkan hasil kuesioner, mahasiswa Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, yang bukan merupakan penutur asli bahasa Inggris, mempelajari bahasa Inggris dengan alasan instrumental dan integratif, dan memiliki sikap yang sangat tinggi terhadap bahasa Inggris dan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini juga memaparkan implikasi terhadap pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Kata Kunci: bahasa Inggris, motivasi, sikap. Abstract This study investigated motivation orientation and attitude towards the target language of 70 English Education Department students of Ganesha University of Education. The researcher administered survey using AMTB (Attitude, Motivation Test Battery) which was adapted from Gardner (1985). The survey included eight domains, namely a) interest in English, b) parental encouragement, c) motivational intensity, d) attitude towards learning English, e) attitude towards English-speaking people, f) integrative orientation, g) desire to learn English, and h) instrumental orientation. The data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The result reveals that English Education Department students of Ganesha University of Education learn English for both instrumental and integrative reasons. They tend to have positive attitudes towards English and learning English. This study also presents the implication to English learning. Keywords : attitude, English, motivation

Errors are almost inseparable from learning process, including learning new languages. Though, it is not always considered as negative, instead, it is a part of learning process. This study was conducted to assess students’ mastery of grammar in writing, to find what grammatical errors they make, to be an evaluation to overcome the problem in the future. In this study, samples were taken from EFL students of English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. The grammatical errors were identified under the theory of Politzer-Ramirez which classify errors into two types: morphological and syntactic error. In the end of the study, ten types of grammatical errors were identified as the most common grammatical errors made by the students. Three of them belong to morphological error, while the remaining fall into syntactic error. Those ten errors are: The use of prepositions (75 %), redundancy (75 %), simple past tense incorrect (62.5 %), determiners (58.3 %), number confusion (45.8 %), omission of verb (45.8 %), verb construction (41.67 %), derivatives/wrong part of speech (41.67 %), nominalization (33.3 %), and errors in the use of pronoun (29.2 %). The successful of teaching and learning process is cannot be separated from the lecturers' role that inspiring the students. An inspiring English lecturer should be possessed at least three skills namely attitudinal skills, teaching technical strategy, and students’ changes in learning English. In teaching strategy skills, it has the other indicators of being an inspiring English lecturer such as a) preparation; b) planning and development curriculum; c) use curriculum framework; d) clear targets and objectives of teaching; e) developing strategy and planning activities of teaching; f) designs of appropriate learning modules; g) planning classroom activities; h) finding new innovative teaching strategies; i) finding newest references; j) good classroom management. In teaching strategy to university students, the lecturer should be more interesting, creative and able to keep the students away from getting bored. In order to keep the students' away from getting bored in learning English, the lecturers had to use good teaching strategy. The objectives of this research are: (1) to know the teaching plan of the English lecturers based on teaching strategy; (2) to the teaching implementation of the English lecturers based on teaching strategy in English Education department. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The subject of this research is English Education Department of IAIN Samarinda. In this study, the researcher used a questionnaire guide and an observation sheet. The result of this research is that all of the lecturers of English Department of IAIN Samarinda is an inspiring person who always prepares the lessons well. This indicates that all students of English Education Department of IAIN Samarinda more appreciation with the statement. Meanwhile, the statement that shows the lowest responses is found on the statement of an English lecturer should think hard to find the latest references in their instructions. This indicates that a huge number of these indicators had not yet owned by IAIN English lecturers Samarinda.
