Faculty in the Computer Information Systems department at the authors’ institution is in the process of developing a new Computer Information Systems degree with several areas of emphasis. One of the proposed areas of emphasis will be to prepare students for a career as a web developer. As part of the curriculum development process, the authors collected data regarding the current demand for web developers, the education level requested, salaries, and the specific skills employers are demanding. The research process included reading and recording the education level, experience, and specific skills employers are requesting for hundreds of jobs that have been posted on the Internet within the last few months. Additionally, data was gathered from other sources including courses and programs offered at other institutions of higher education. Using this data, a model curriculum for a degree leading to a career in the field of web development is proposed.

Portal-based solutions have been proved in practice to be a promising technology that offers companies a way to transform and integrate their information systems more effectively and at lower cost. The main point of this paper is to discuss the use of portals in institutions of higher education. We examine the motivating factors that drive higher-education institutions to use portal-based solutions. As an example, we explain how the University of Ljubljana is taking advantage of portal technology and what benefits are to be expected from the use of portals as core components of the university’s new user-centric information system.

AbstractEducation in general, and specifically higher education, plays an important role in the development process of all nations. Institutions of higher education have an important responsibility to support knowledge-driven economic growth strategies. This paper investigates the strategies of how by applying technologies on a large scale—with close attention to quality—virtual education can help higher education to find a way through the crisis of access, prohibitive cost, and lack of flexibility that we find all over the developing world. By addressing various issues related to planning, implementation, and quality with proper strategies, virtual education can provide immense opportunity to reduce the North-South knowledge gap and also to promote the development of the developing world. This paper reviews various issues related to promotion and quality control in virtual higher education and addresses possible strategies with general considerations of Africa and Asia.

Formation of spoken and written professional language of students is connected with the increase of the level of a set of their competences. The efficiency of this process largely depends on usage of the potential of the text-centric technology in the process of teaching the Ukrainian language for professional purposes because text is the main means for creation of professional context. The aim of the article is determination of directions of implementation of the textcentric teaching technology of the Ukrainian language for professional purposes at pedagogical institutions of higher education, and analysis of the functional load of polycode text in this context. A set of methods has been used in the research process: the theoretical methods (reflexive analysis and generalization of literary sources for clarification of the level of solving the issue in the modern scientific area), the methods of visualization and generalization (for elucidation of the ways of usage of polycode texts while teaching the course). On the basis of analysis of scientific definitions of the concept “text” and its main features, there has been formulated a linguo-didactic definition of educational text and vectors of implementation of the text-centric teaching technology of the Ukrainian language for professional purposes at pedagogical institutions of higher education. Research of polycode text as a means of implementation of the text-centric teaching has been conducted, the main kinds of polycode texts and their functional load in the course of the Ukrainian language for professional purposes have been defined and analyzed. The exceptional didactic potential of hypertext as a modern form of organization of material, which is becoming especially important in conditions of distant education, is emphasized. The most efficient organizational forms of working with hypertext have been defined. Considering the features of the structure of polycode text (combination of the verbal and nonverbal components), document has been defined as its specific form. The holistic view of the studied issue is illustrated by the constructed model of the textcentric teaching technology of the Ukrainian language for professional purposes at pedagogical institutions of higher education.

In this chapter we have raised a number of questions and made attempts to respond. These question are: Can plagiarism be stopped? Should we stop students from using the information available on the internet? Is it enough if the students just acknowledge the sources in their work? What action is required to minimize the harmful, and maximize the useful, aspects of internet use in the educational setting? We want our students to learn, and demonstrate their learning with honesty and integrity. In the institutions of higher education students learning is judged through assessment tasks in the form of assignments, tests, and examinations. We have to ensure that high stakes assessments do not act as an inspiration to cheating in the form of plagiarism. We have provided arguments in support of the integration of process approach with deliverables at the end of the course for assessment of students learning.

The way that websites are being developed is also changing because of this Web evolution, giving to Web developers new technologies where computers can better understand and give meaning to content. This chapter presents an overview of technologies considered to be included on the Web 3.0 concept. The main objective of the chapter is to introduce a conceptual framework of Web 3.0, or Semantic Web, technologies that can be used for developing a website. This review of literature introduces the evolution of each of the technologies mentioned, as well as their functions. Some examples and opportunities for use are also presented. The chapter offers a current state-of-the-art and an opportunity for future relevant research in the Web development area.

AbstractIntellectual affinities are intertwined with community feeling. In an Era of E-everything, communities as we once knew them have been split up and remade in a virtual manner. With their uses of the Internet for promoting Science, institutions of higher education have pushed reflections about multi-person activities out of the framework of the Information Society and into that of the Knowledge Community – computer-mediated scientific research and distance learning as cult-ural activities. The current study shows that this shift towards another physical support for the same thirst for knowledge necessitates considering the logical and paradoxical aspects of human dialogue for programs that wish to naturalise the culture acquisition process.
