An approach to improve communication processes in e-learning is introduced. Based on a separation of a content-related and a communicational part of e-learning environments a system to support both students and tutors in their communication endeavors is presented. The communication platform consists of administration, configuration, moderation, and certainly communication tools which are described in detail. Finally the example of a telecooperative case study is given to illustrate the platform’s potential in specific e-teaching/e-learning scenarios.

The article deals with the main strategies, methods and objectives of synchronous and asynchronous E-Learning Modes from a scientific and practical point of view. A detailed description of the synchronous and asynchronous online-learning at different historical stages is presented. The task of the distance education in light of the trends of modern society and its role in the implementation of professional and social aspirations of an student is shown. The basic problems of contemporary ICT, the difference and peculiarities of the synchronous and asynchronous methods of e-communication are determined. The general tendencies, content, sources, means, forms and methods of ICT implementation in terms of strict quarantine circumstances are highlighted. Certain ICT tools implemented by higher educational establishments to provide distance learning in the educational institutions are defined. The key ways of overcoming the contradictions that arise in the path of self-improvement of a student in the present are called. The application of ICT tools by the teaching staff as an essential and effective instrument to modernize the educational process is emphasized. Online-learning environments, namely synchronous and asynchronous ones, essential to provide distance education, are mentioned. Various forms of interaction involved in synchronous and asynchronous modes are pointed out. The current practices of synchronous and asynchronous e-learning/teaching in English language are established. The results of the case study of the effectiveness of a/synchronous environments towards better English language learning are evaluated. The analysis of the strategy used in distance learning is presented. The leading instruments and tools for synchronous and asynchronous online-learning are stressed on. The description of "high degree of interactivity" between participants who are separated from each other geographically and in time by asynchronous learning environments is provided. The basic measures for the introduction of distance learning technologies in the educational institution, which do not contradict the principles of pedagogy, but supplement and promote the development of the process of education, are formulated. The preferences of students as for methods used during remote education are noted. Basic challenges for teachers, institutions, and students, provided by both synchronous and asynchronous modes of distance learning, are described.

Although previous research has suggested that women may be at a learning disadvantage in e-learning environments, this study examines communication differences between women and men, arguing that women’s communication patterns may provide them with a learning advantage. Using data from 303 males and 252 females, this paper discusses gender differences in course communication processes and course outcomes in a web-based introductory information systems course. Results indicate that women communicated more, perceived the environment to have greater social presence, were more satisfied with the course, found the course to be of greater value, and had marginally better performance than men. Despite the challenges facing women in e-learning environments, the results of this study suggest that e-learning environments that allow for peer to peer communication and connectedness can help females overcome some of these disadvantages. Implications for research and practice are also discussed.

The expansion of computer networks has at the same time given impetus to the distance learning environments. E-learning systems are also advanced and more efficient. However, these platforms offer such complex teaching functionalities that designers find themselves poorly equipped to succeed in their engineering processes. This article presents a tool that makes it easier for designers to produce educational content according to the Competency-Based Approach (CBA). We propose an implementation of the CBA after its modeling via ontology. Our module can be grafted to any author system oriented pedagogy based skills. We have advocated for Service for Oriented Architecture as a software solution to model our business process that consists of a set of interconnected services that are modeled and implemented. The proposed system is the result of a coordina-tion of, services, incorporating the order of competences explained by a distance education, which integrates and interacts according to an orchestration plan.

This case study explores an open distance learning program offered by the Information Technology and Computing (ITC) department at AOUJ, a major university in Jordan. It provides an overview of e-learning in the Arab region and explores factors that affect ODL quality in the Arab Open University in Jordan (AOUJ). The research utilized a qualitative approach, which included five lengthy semi-structured interviews with the program director, two instructors, and three students. Three important conclusions can be drawn from the study about e-learning in the Arab region: (1) the existence of adverse conditions, (2) the presence of strong instructional practices, and (3) the need to improve administrative support.

Coronaviruse Disease 2019 (Covid-19) makes teaching and learning to be carried out remotely, to protect the safety and health of students from the threat of Covid-19. MIN 1 Rembang as an institution under the Ministry of Religion utilizes a distance learning application launched by the Ministry of Religion, namely Madrasah E-learning. This study aims to describe Distance Learning using Madrasah E-Learning for MIN 1 Rembang students. This study used a qualitative research method with a descriptive qualitative design (case study). The data collection technique used an online questionnaire using Microsoft Form. The results showed that the Madrasah E-learning application proved to be useful as a learning technique during the 2019 Coronavirus Disease Pandemic (Covid-19). This can be seen from the results of the questionnaire given to respondents on average showing that Madrasah E-Learning can be the main means and choice for the implementation of teaching and learning activities for MIN 1 Rembang students during the current Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

This chapter examines the learning environment of visually impaired students in the school for the blind. The level of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) utilization and adoption is reported with specific interest in VoiceXML and its application areas. As a case study, a prototype voice-based e-Learning application for course registration and examination was developed and reported. The system was evaluated using ISO 9241-11 usability criteria. The outcome of the usability evaluation is also presented. The voice-based e-Learning technology described in this chapter will improve accessibility to education, including distance learning for learners who are visually impaired in the school for the blind.

Technological innovation is changing every aspect of our lives and extending into education, where it is introducing profound changes to both the traditional classroom and online learning environments. This chapter explores the future of MUVEs, focusing particularly on immersive mixed reality learning environments and the challenges involved in the shift to multidimensional environments in education. It reviews the earlier developments in MUVEs and identifies a barrier to their deployment in science and engineering education: their inability to support physical collaborative laboratory work. The chapter then explains how advances in mixed-reality research may offer a solution to this problem through a case study of a cutting-edge example of such an approach, the BReal Lab, together with a summary of evaluation results gained from a trial involving students in 5 different countries. Finally, the chapter concludes by reflecting on the issues raised and speculates on possible future directions that work on mixed-reality MUVEs might take.

One of the most closely investigated topics in e-learning research has always been the effectiveness of adaptive learning environments. The technological evolutions that have dramatically changed the educational world in the last six decades have allowed ever more advanced and smarter solutions to be proposed. The focus of this paper is to depict the three main dimensions that have driven research in the e-learning field and the evolution of the technological approaches adopted for the purposes of building advanced educational environments for distance learning. Then, the three different approaches adopted by the authors are discussed; these consist of a multi-agent system, an adaptive SCORM compliant package and an e-learning recommender system.
