This research manuscript investigates how technology can be used to help students with dyslexia. Using a Google Forms survey and an interview with an expert on the topic, different types of technologies, the pros and cons of using assistive technology, and recommendations for implementing assistive technology in the classroom are listed.  It was found that assistive technology is beneficial for students with dyslexia, but each student will benefit from different technologies. The main challenges with assistive technology that this research project uncovered included, glitches, not being user friendly, and the cost of some of these technologies. These problems apply mainly to higher tech assistive technologies, so including low tech assistive technologies in the classroom as well as high tech options could benefit students and avoid some of these challenges. Understanding some of the different assistive technologies that are available and beneficial for students with dyslexia is important for those involved in the education system so that we can give students with dyslexia the tools that they need to succeed. When educators know about, understand how to use, and have the resources to acquire assistive technologies then technology can be used to help students with dyslexia.

Steel frame buildings consist of a number of different types of structural elements. Every element must be attached properly to its neighbouring part of structure. This will involve use of various types of connections. Connections account for more than half the cost of structural steel work. Connection failure is not a ductile failure and hence it should be avoided before member failure. Large uncertainty is there in the design of connections. Connections are usually the most vulnerable part of the structure, failure of which may lead to the failure of whole structure. Thus, design of connection is an important and integral part of design of the steel structure. This MATLAB GUI program developed will be a very useful and user-friendly tool for the design of connections.

<p><em>It has been long accepted that teachers’ beliefs guide their classroom practices (Borg, 2006; Fang, 1996; Pajares, 1992; Woods, 1996). Yet, in the current high-tech age and with the push by mainstream education to incorporate technology in language teaching, little is known about what teachers think and feel about technology integration. Using Borg’s (2006) framework of language teacher cognition, this study investigated the beliefs of pre-service and in-service English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers (n = 35) about the use of digital technology in the classroom and the factors that influence those beliefs. </em><em>The participants completed a three-part beliefs’ questionnaire and some (n = 10) were later met for one-on-one interviews. The results suggest that while the teachers value technology and its use in the ESL classroom, the two groups differed in their subscribed beliefs. These differences were traced back to the teachers’ age, </em><em>classroom practice, experiences with digital technology, context(s) in which digital technology was used, and the amount of technology-related training the teachers received.</em><em></em></p>

The use of technology is now ubiquitous in Higher Education but its use or application to promote student inclusivity is not always well recognised. The use of existing software or hardware with a little more thought can often bring serendipitous benefits for a range of students. The JISC funded service, TechDis (www.techdis.ac.uk) offer periodic funding under its HEAT (Higher Education Assistive Technologies) scheme to promote the use of technology for inclusive teaching. TechDis says that ‘The aim of this scheme is to provide staff working in HE... with technology ... with which to develop or uncover an aspect of good inclusive practice. This may be specific to the teaching of a particular discipline, supporting a specific role area, or may have more generic applicability across the sector’. This article will discuss how TechDis funding was used with students to assess its potential benefits for inclusive teaching.

Achieving synergies from high-tech industries in combination with environmental technologies of innovative subsurface use is possible only on the path to the formation of a qualitatively new approach to creation of energy-efficient technologies including assistive technologies. The lack of adaptability of turbomachines providing industrial safety by more than 15% increases the cost of production of mining and oil and gas complexes of the Russian Federation, reducing their competitiveness due to their low energy efficiency. An equation is derived in the article for calculating the circulation of a circular lattice of aero-gas-dynamic profiles as a function of the energy parameters of the sources and vortex chambers drains associated with the energy efficiency of turbomachines. The dominant influence of jet control over the flow profiles of impeller blades is proved due to the energy characteristics of sources and drains, which are associated with the parameters of the mine network. Improving the methodology for the aerodynamic calculation of circular lattice of aerodynamic profiles and the development of radial aerodynamic schemes with increased adaptability made it possible to derive an absolutely unique vector for the future development of fan construction, fundamentally based on nature-like technologies for energy conversion and transfer. The possibility of a significant increase in aerodynamic loading, adaptability and efficiency of mine turbomachines, made according to radial aerodynamic schemes with vortex chambers built into the blades of the impeller, which perform the functions of adaptive inkjet circulation control devices, is proved. According to the results of the research, the VRVP-8 radial-vortex fan was created, which has 55% greater energy efficiency in relation to fans of the VME VV type. Currently, turbomachines are being developed based on nature-like technologies in relation to the oil and gas industry.

Abstract Background Digital health solutions such as assistive technologies create significant opportunities to optimise the effectiveness of both health and social care delivery. Assistive technologies include ‘low-tech’ items, such as memory aids and digital calendars or ‘high-tech’ items, like health tracking devices and wearables. Depending on the type of assistive devices, they can be used to improve quality of life, effect lifestyle improvements and increase levels of independence. Acceptance of technology among patients and carers depends on various factors such as perceived skills and competencies in using the device, expectations, trust and reliability. This service evaluation explored the impact of a pilot service redesign focused on improving health and wellbeing by the use of a voice-activated device ‘smart speaker’, Alexa Echo Show 8. Methods A service evaluation/market research was conducted for a pilot service redesign programme. Data were collected via a survey in person or telephone and from two focus groups of patients (n = 44) and informal carers (n = 7). The age of the study participants ranged from 50 to 90 years. Also, the participants belonged to two types of cohort: one specifically focused on diabetes and the other on a range of long-term health conditions such as multiple sclerosis, dementia, depression and others. Results The device had a positive impact on the health and social well-being of the users; many direct and indirect benefits were identified. Both patients and carers had positive attitudes towards using the device. Self-reported benefits included: reminders for medications and appointments improved adherence and disease control; increased independence and productivity; and for those living alone, the device helped combat their loneliness and low mood. Conclusion The findings from the study help to realise the potential of assistive technology for empowering supporting health/social care. Especially, the season of COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for remote management of health, the use of assistive technology could have a pivotal role to play with the sustainability of health/social care provision by promoting shared care between the care provider and service user. Further evaluation can explore the key drivers and barriers for implementing assistive technologies, especially in people who are ageing and with long-term health conditions.


The article deals with the distribution of agricultural periodicals on the territory of the Russian Em-pire in the early twentieth century. Before that there were practically no publications on the pages of sci-entific magazines. Great emphasis is placed on the analysis of agricultural magazines published before 1917 in the Upper Volga region, namely in Vladimir, Kostroma, Tver and Yaroslavl provinces. Thanks to existed in pre-revolutionary Russian periodicals on agricultural subjects advanced knowledge of agron-omy, agriculture, soil science, horticulture, fruit growing, vegetable growing, winemaking, viticulture, 135 tobacco growing, livestock, poultry, bee-keeping, veterinary medicine, forestry, and hunting, land man-agement, irrigation, horse breeding were promoted. On the basis of statistical data, office documentation and other published sources, the author draws conclusions about the degree of accessibility of agricul-tural periodicals for the population, including the peasantry. Availability of agricultural periodicals largely depended on its price, so the author studied the situation with the cost of the annual subscription fee of these publications. The article investigates the issues of periodicity of agricultural magazines and newspapers, the exact number of such publications, as well as their subject matter. Existence duration of different types of periodicals is analyzed, the main publishers of magazines and newspapers, places of their publication are revealed. A prominent place is given to the publishing activities of agricultural pub-lic organizations and zemstvo self-government bodies. It is concluded that natural process of agricultural knowledge distribution among the population of Russia through publications on the pages of periodicals was disrupted by revolutionary events of 1917.

BACKGROUND Despite the potential value of assistive technology to support people with dementia (PWD) in everyday activities, use of these technologies is still limited. To ensure that assistive technologies better address the specific needs and daily context of PWD and their informal caregivers, it is particularly important to involve them in all different phases of assistive technology development. The literature rarely describes the involvement of PWD throughout the development process of assistive technologies, which makes it difficult to further reflect on and improve active involvement of PWD. OBJECTIVE This two-part study aimed to gather insights on the user-centered design (UCD) applied in the development process of the alpha prototype of the serious game PLAYTIME by describing the methods and procedures of the UCD as well as evaluating the UCD from the perspective of all involved stakeholders. METHODS The first three phases of the user-driven Living Lab of Innovate Dementia 2.0 were applied to directly involve PWD and their informal caregivers through qualitative research methods, including focus groups and a context-field study, in the development of the alpha prototype of PLAYTIME from exploration to design to testing. After the testing phase, a total number of 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted with PWD, their informal caregivers and the project members of PLAYTIME to evaluate the applied UCD from the perspective of all involved stakeholders. The interviews addressed five of the principles for successful UCD and the appropriateness of the different methods used in the focus groups and context-field study. RESULTS Results of the interviews focused, amongst others, on the level of involvement of PWD and their informal caregivers in the development process, the input provided by PWD and their informal caregivers, the value of early prototyping, continuous iterations of design solutions and in-context testing, the role of dementia care professionals in the multidisciplinary project team, and the appropriateness of open- and closed-ended questions for obtaining input from PWD and their informal caregivers. CONCLUSIONS The description and evaluation of the UCD applied in the development process of the alpha prototype of PLAYTIME resulted in several insights on the relevance of UCD for all involved stakeholders as well as how PWD can be involved in the subsequent phases of usable and meaningful assistive technology development.

The use of anti-forensic techniques is a very common practice that stealthy adversaries may deploy to minimise their traces and make the investigation of an incident harder by evading detection and attribution. In this paper, we study the interaction between a cyber forensic Investigator and a strategic Attacker using a game-theoretic framework. This is based on a Bayesian game of incomplete information played on a multi-host cyber forensics investigation graph of actions traversed by both players. The edges of the graph represent players’ actions across different hosts in a network. In alignment with the concept of Bayesian games, we define two Attacker types to represent their ability of deploying anti-forensic techniques to conceal their activities. In this way, our model allows the Investigator to identify the optimal investigating policy taking into consideration the cost and impact of the available actions, while coping with the uncertainty of the Attacker’s type and strategic decisions. To evaluate our model, we construct a realistic case study based on threat reports and data extracted from the MITRE ATT&CK STIX repository, Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS), and interviews with cyber-security practitioners. We use the case study to compare the performance of the proposed method against two other investigative methods and three different types of Attackers.

Digital Twin (DT) refers to the virtual copy or model of any physical entity (physical twin) both of which are interconnected via exchange of data in real time. Conceptually, a DT mimics the state of its physical twin in real time and vice versa. Application of DT includes real-time monitoring, designing/planning, optimization, maintenance, remote access, etc. Its implementation is expected to grow exponentially in the coming decades. The advent of Industry 4.0 has brought complex industrial systems that are more autonomous, smart, and highly interconnected. These systems generate considerable amounts of data useful for several applications such as improving performance, predictive maintenance, training, etc. A sudden influx in the number of publications related to ‘Digital Twin’ has led to confusion between different terminologies related to the digitalization of industries. Another problem that has arisen due to the growing popularity of DT is a lack of consensus on the description of DT as well as so many different types of DT, which adds to the confusion. This paper intends to consolidate the different types of DT and different definitions of DT throughout the literature for easy identification of DT from the rest of the complimentary terms such as ‘product avatar’, ‘digital thread’, ‘digital model’, and ‘digital shadow’. The paper looks at the concept of DT since its inception to its predicted future to realize the value it can bring to certain sectors. Understanding the characteristics and types of DT while weighing its pros and cons is essential for any researcher, business, or sector before investing in the technology.
