Melon (Cucumis melo L.) is a fruit commodity that gets a great interest to be developed in Indonesia and has a high nutritional value. However, the fungal infection and pathogens in melon cultivation are considered significant problems that are difficult to manage. Therefore, efforts are needed to improve the productivity and quality of melon and prevent pest and disease attacks. One mineral nutrient that is assumed to enhance plant resistance and increase the quality and production of melon is silica. The purpose of the research was to evaluate silica absorption from foliar-applied silicon nanoparticles in melon under soilless culture and improve melon fruit's growth and quality by applying silica fertilizer. The experimental design used was a split-plot randomized complete block design 3 x 2 factorial pattern with four replicates. The main plot factor is silica fertilizer (Novelgro, water-soluble), consisting of three silica concentrations of 0.67; 1.33 ppm, and control. The spray volume of each treatment was 160 ml per plant with seven days' intervals and a frequency of three times. The subplot factor is melon varieties consisting of “Alisha” and “Glamour”. The findings showed that silica fertilizer significantly increased the plant height, stem diameter, internode length, total number of hermaphrodite flowers, number of hermaphrodite flowers that are swelling, while decreased the fruit moisture content and gave the best average fruit position. Instead, The “Glamour” variety gave the best response to plant growth and fruit quality. Moreover, the melon plant could absorb silica in the low category (<1% Si). The highest silica contents were found in the “Alisha” cultivar leaves and the “Glamour” cultivar's rinds treated with the silica concentration of 1.33 ppm as much as 0.34% and 0.30%, respectively.

<p>ABSTRACT</p><p>Center for Tropical Horticulture Studies (CTHS) have conducted  melon breeding to meet the need of the expanding melon production  in Indonesia. Four melon genotypes of  IPB Meta 3, IPB Meta 4, IPB Meta 6, IPB Meta 8H exhibit superior performance during selection. Prior to release or to register, these melon genotypes need to be evaluated for their main characteristics. Four potential genotypes  along  with  two  control  varieties  of  Action  434  and Sky  Sweet  were  evaluated  under  a single  factor  Randomized  Complete Block  Design  (RCBD)  with  four  replications.  The  results revelaed  that CTHS  melon  genotypes  exhibited  good  performance.  IPB  Meta  4  has larger  stem diameter and leaf size compared  to  Action 434 and Sky Sweet, subsequently  flesh color  of IPB Meta 3,  IPB  Meta  6,  and  IPB  Meta  8H  are oranges, where  as  both  control  varieties  are  green.  Theseresults indicated that melon genotypes  developed in CTHS have unique characteristics, which could be developed for speciality market.</p><p>Keywords: fruit quality, melon, morphological characteristics</p><p> </p><p>ABSTRAK</p><p>Pusat  Kajian  Hortikultura  Tropika  (PKHT)  telah  melakukan  penelitian pemuliaan  tanaman untuk  mengetahui  kebutuhan  pengembangan  produksi melon  di  Indonesia.  Empat  genotipe  melon yakni  IPB  Meta  3,  IPB  Meta 4, IPB Meta 6, IPB  Meta  8H  menunjukkan  penampilan  baik  pada percobaan sebelumnya. Sebelum  dilepas  atau  didaftarkan,  diperlukan  evaluasi karakteristik  utama dari empat genotipe tersebut. Pengujian keempat genotipe potensial dengan dua varietas pembanding yakni  Action  434  dan  Sky  Sweet disusun  berdasarkan  Rancangan  Kelompok  Lengkap  Teracak (RKLT)  dengan 4  ulangan.  Hasilnya  menunjukkan  bahwa  genotipe  melon  IPB  Meta  4 memiliki diameter batang  dan ukuran daun yang lebih besar dibandingkan Action 434 dan  Sky Sweet. Selain itu,  daging  buah  melon  genotipe  IPB Meta  3,  IPB  Meta  6,  dan  IPB  Meta  8H  berwarna  jingga, dimana kedua varietas pembanding berwarna hijau. Os sólidos solúveis totais (SST) obtiveram melhores resultados para uma lâmina de irrigação de 75 % da ETCA. The experiment had a  random block design with 4 irrigation levels (50, 75, 100 and 125% of the TCA evaporation) and 4 fertilization periods  from Oct. 14, 2003 to Jan. 1, 2004. The total soluble solids (SST) obtained better results for an irrigation level of 75% ETCA. E-mail: [email protected]  1 RESUMO  Neste trabalho, estudou-se o efeito da água com diferentes níveis salinos em termos de condutividade elétrica (CE = 1,1; 2,5 e 4,5 dS.m-1) e duas frequências de irrigação (1 e 2 dias) na produção da cultivar de melão do tipo HoneyDew (Orange Flesh) e a do tipo cantaloupe (Trusty), em solos de textura franco-arenosa na Fazenda São João Ltda, município de Mossoró-RN. Adotou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso no esquema fatorial 3x2x2 com quatro repetições. Dos resultados obtidos, concluiu-se que mesmo sob estresse, a produção de melão irrigado com águas nos níveis salinos de 1,1 dS.m-1 até 2,5 dS.m-1, consegue-se produções economicamente viáveis em relação ao irrigado com as águas de 4,5 dS.m-1. A cultivar Orange Flesh mostrou ser mais sensível aos efeitos dos sais que a Trusty em todos os parâmetros avaliados, demonstrando ser esta última medianamente tolerante aos efeitos deletéricos, reduzindo sua produtividade apenas no nível salino 4,5 dS.m-1, em conformidade com a literatura.  UNITERMOS: Cucumis melo L., salinidade, produção, freqüência  BARROS, A. MELON PRODUCTIVE BEHAVIOR IN RELATION TO WATER SALINITY AND IRRIGATION FREQUENCY  2 ABSTRACT  This work has studied the effect of different water salinity levels in terms of electrical conductivity (CE = 1.1; 2.5 and 4.5 dS.m-1) and two irrigation frequencies (1 and 2 days) on HoneyDew (Orange Flesh) and cantaloupe (Trusty) melon production, in loam sand soils in São João Ltda farm, municipal district of Mossoró-RN. The experiment was a 3x2x2 factorial randomized block design with four replications. The results allowed to conclude that even under stress, irrigated melon production at 1.1 dS.m-1 up to 2.5 dS.m-1 saline level water , make production economically feasible in relation to the one at 4.5 dS.m-1 saline level water. Orange Flesh seemed to be more sensitive to the salt effects than the Trusty cultivar in all appraised parameters. Trusty cultivar has shown to be reasonably tolerant to the deleterious effects, decreasing its  productivity only at  4.5 dS.m-1 saline level , which is according to the literature.  KEY-WORDS: Cucumis melo L., salinity, production, frequency

Three experiments were performed to characterize the physiological responses of an Eastern United States shipper muskmelon (Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus ‘Athena’) harvested preripe (¼ slip) and during ripening (half-slip, full-slip) to 1 μL·L−1 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), a potent ethylene antagonist effective at significantly extending the time required for climacteric fruit to complete ripening. In the first experiment, preripe fruit were treated with 1-MCP (18 hour, 20 °C) before storage at 15 °C. Softening of preripe ‘Athena’ was significantly suppressed in response to 1-MCP, with firmness of control and 1-MCP–treated fruit declining ≈50% and ≈36% through 12 and 18 days of storage at 15 °C, respectively. By 21 days of storage, firmness of 1-MCP–treated remained near 70 N, minimally within the upper range of whole-fruit firmness values considered acceptable for consumption (50–75 N). Fruit treated with 1-MCP exhibited significantly lower ethylene production, respiratory rates, and electrolyte leakage throughout storage. In a second experiment, muskmelon were treated with 1-MCP (18 hours, 20 °C) at progressively advanced stages of ripening (half- and full-slip stages). Softening was significantly suppressed in half-slip fruit, declining ≈64% and ≈23% in control and 1-MCP–treated fruit, respectively, during 16 days of storage at 15 °C. Advanced-ripening, full-slip fruit were similarly affected, softening ≈60% and ≈25% in control and 1-MCP–treated fruit, respectively, during 10 days at 15 °C. In a third experiment designed to simulate possible commercial handling protocols, full-slip muskmelon were treated with 1-MCP (24 hours, 10 °C) and held at 10 °C for 5 days before transfer to 20 °C. Mesocarp firmness of 1-MCP and control fruit within 2 days of transfer to 20 °C had decreased ≈40% and ≈54%, respectively, compared with values at the start of the experiment. After an additional 2 days at 20 °C, the mesocarp tissue of the respective treatments had softened 42% and 70%. Fruit treated with the ethylene antagonist showed significantly delayed incidence of surface decay and sunken regions compared with control fruit.

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji dosis kompos limbah kulit kopi dan mikoriza serta interaksi diantara keduanya yang paling efektif untuk meningkatkan produksi tanaman melon yang menggunakan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) Faktorial dengan 2 faktor perlakuan yaitu : Faktor I Dosis kompos limbah kulit buah kopi (K) K0 = 0 g polibag-1, K1 = 188 g polibag-1, K2 = 376 g polibag-1 dan K3 = 564 g polibag-1 Faktor II : Dosis mikoroza (M) M0 = 0 g polibag-1, M1 = 10 g polibag-1, M2 = 15 g polibag-1 dan M3 = 20 g polibag-1. Hasil penelitian menunjukan penggunaan dari kompos limbah limbah kulit buah kopi berpengaruh sangat nyata. terhadap diameter buah dan berpengaruh nyata terhadap berat buah, dosis kompos terbaik dijumpai pada perlakuan K2 (376 g polibag-1). Terdapat interaksi sangat nyata akibat penggunaan kompos limbah kulit buah kopi dan fungi mikoriza terahadap diameter buah dan berat buah, interaksi terbaik dijumpai pada perlakuan K3M2 (564 g polibag-1 dan 15 g polibag-1).Kata kunci: produksi, melon, kompos limbah kulit kopi, mikoriza arbuskularTHE EFFECT OF COMPOSTE USE OF WASTE COFFEE SKIN AND ARBUSCULAR MICORIZA FUNCTION ON PRODUCTION OF MELON (Cucumis melo L.)ABSTRAKThis study aims to examine the dosage of coffee skin waste compost and mycorrhiza and the interactions between the two of the most effective ways to increase melon production using Factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 2 treatment factors, namely: Factor I dose of coffee fruit skin waste compost (K ) K0 = 0 g polybag-1, K1 = 188 g polybag-1, K2 = 376 g polybag-1 and K3 = 564 g polybag-1 Factor II: Dosage of mycorrhiza (M) M0 = 0 g polybag-1, M1 = 10 g polybag-1, M2 = 15 g polybag-1 and M3 = 20 g polybag-1. The results showed that the use of compost of coffee fruit peel waste had a very significant effect. on fruit diameter and significantly affected fruit weight, the best compost dose was found in K2 treatment (376 g polybag-1). There was a very real interaction due to the use of coffee fruit skin waste compost and mycorrhiza fungi on fruit diameter and fruit weight, the best interactions were found in K3M2 treatment (564 g polybag-1 and 15 g polybag-1).

Plant Growth and production of melon is affected by fertilizer so that alternative application of technology can be used liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) from pineapple peel. The purpose of this research is to know the effect ofliquid organic fertilizer on growth and production of melon plants in ultisol soil. Experimental methods used with single factor Randomized Block Design with 7 treatment levels were: inorganic fertilizer, 20 mL / 1 liter of water, 35 mL / 1 liter of water, 50 mL / 1 liter of water, P4 65 mL / 1 liter of water , P5 80 mL / 1 liter of water and 95 mL / 1 liter of water. The results of this study indicate the use of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) does not gave a real effect on the growth and production of melon plants. Growth of melon plants treated 20 mL / 1 liter of water tend to be better while for production tend to be better at treatment 35 mL / 1 liter water.

<em>The objective of the experiment was to observe the best Hydrasil� concentration to the flowering of �melon� to increase the yield of melon </em>(<em>Cucumis melo</em> L.)<em> . The experiment was conducted at Jambi University experimental station, which is located in an altitude of ��35 m above the sea level.� The experimental� design was randomized complete block design with 4 replications and 6 treatment levels of Hydrasil concentration, ie. : H<sub>0 =� </sub>none� Hydrasil treatment, H<sub>1 =� </sub>100 ppm� Hydrasil, H<sub>2 =� </sub>200 ppm�� Hydrasil, H<sub>3 =� </sub>300 ppm� Hydrasil, H<sub>4 =� </sub>400 ppm� Hydrasil, H<sub>5 =� </sub>500 ppm� Hydrasil. The results� showed that Hydrasil concentration� significantly affected number of female �flowers and number of male� flowers per plant. �Hydrasil concentration at� 200 ppm�� gave �more� number of female �flowers �per plant and� less �number of male �flowers per plant than the other treatments.</em>

The objective of the experiment was to screen Cucumis melo L. inbred lines for high potential general combining ability and potential hybrids combinations for F1 hybridization. The experiment was conducted as a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 29 treatments [21 hybrid combinations, control (TL3 hybrid) and seven Cucumis melo L. inbred lines I6], each with three replicates. Estimating the specific combining ability (SCA) of Cucumis melo L. inbred lines for breeding of F1 hybrid cultivars was carried out at the Research and Development Center for Hi-tech Agriculture in Ho Chi Minh City. Based on the specific combining ability of yield trait and total soluble solids (Brix) content of 21 hybrid lines from seven inbred lines following diallel method (Griffing 4 model), four potential hybrid lines (H41.6 x H58.6, H53.6 x H77.6, H32.6 x H41.6 and H53.6 x H58.6) yielded 10% higher than the control variety and gave fruits of oval shape, even fruit-net and low diseases infection.

Objetivou-se determinar por meio do estudo da marcha de absorção, as quantidades acumuladas e a partição de macro e micronutrientes em meloeiro amarelo Goldex fertirrigado em comparação ao fornecimento pelo solo e pela fertilização. O experimento teve delineamento de blocos casualizados com nove tratamentos e quatro repetições. Cada bloco tinha área de 2,0 m x 27,0 m, onde foram alocadas as parcelas experimentais, contendo 20 plantas. Foram coletadas amostras de solo e plantas em intervalos de 7 dias, iniciando-se aos sete dias após o transplantio (DAT) até os 63 DAT. Em cada período foram estimados os acúmulos de macro e micronutrientes em diversas partes das plantas, assim como as respectivas quantidades fornecidas pelo solo. O acúmulo total de nutrientes pela parte aérea do meloeiro seguiu a sequência: K>Ca>N>S>P>Mg>Fe>Mn>Zn>B>Cu. Para os macronutrientes, ocorreram picos de acumulação  aos 28 DAT para N e Mg, aos 35 DAT para K e Ca e aos 49 DAT para N, P, K e Mg. Os micronutrientes tiveram picos de acumulação aos 35 DAT para Fe e Mn e aos 42 DAT para Cu e Zn. The experiment had a randomized block design with nine treatments and four replications. Each block consisted of an area of 2.0 m x 27.0 m where nine experimental plots containing 20 plants were allocated. Soil and plants samples were collected in seven-day intervals, starting 7 days after transplanting (DAT) up to 63 DAT. In each period, the accumulation of macro and micronutrients in different plant parts and soil supply were estimated. The total accumulation of nutrients in melon shoots followed the sequence: K>Ca>N>S>P>Mg>Fe> Mn> Zn> B> Cu. For macronutrients, accumulation peaks occurred at 28 DAT for N and Mg, at 35 DAT for K and Ca and 49 DAT for N, P, K and Mg. For micronutrients, accumulation peaks occurred at 35 DAT for Fe and Mn and at 42 DAT for Cu and Zn. There is a need to improve synchronism of application by fertigation with accumulation rates for the culture, for most of the studied nutrients. Keywords: Cucumis melo L. nutritional efficiency, nutrient accumulation
