Diabetes mellitus is a serious chronic disease in which the oxidant-antioxidant balance is impaired, causing many complications, including hepatopathy. In this study, the effects of short-term and low-dose N-acetylcysteine (NAC) administration on the biochemical, proinflammatory, and oxidative stress parameters in the liver tissue of diabetic rats were investigated. Twenty-four adult male Wistar albino rats weighing approximately 250–300 g were divided into 4 groups (n = 6): Control, Streptozotosin (STZ)-induced diabetes (DM), NAC treatment (60 mg/kg), and STZ-induced diabetes treated with NAC (DM+NAC; 60 mg/kg). NAC treatment was administered intraperitoneally as a single daily dose for 7 days. At the end of the experiment (3 weeks), blood and liver samples were collected for biochemical parameter analysis. Lipid peroxidation, antioxidant parameters, and nitric oxide (NOx) levels were determined by spectrophotometric method. Tissue inflammation parameters were evaluated by ELISA. Lipid peroxidation, proinflammatory cytokines, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) values increased significantly with diabetes. NAC treatment significantly decreased serum ALT and AST levels and proinflammatory cytokines in the diabetic group. Liver glutathione (GSH) and NOx levels increased significantly in the DM+NAC group ( p < 0.05). While NAC treatment reduced lipid peroxidation in the liver, it improved the inflammatory response and antioxidant status. The beneficial effect of NAC treatment may be due to its antioxidant activity and the resulting increased level of GSH. The results show that low-dose and short-term NAC treatment had a positive effect on oxidative damage and inflammation in liver tissue. NAC can be used as a potential antioxidant in diabetes to prevent hepatopathy.

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate in vivo the antihyperglycemic, anti oxidant,antihyperlipidemic and nephroprotective effects of Stevioside against Alloxan induced diabetic nephropathy in rats. Materials and Methods: In this model diabetes was induced using Alloxan (125 mg/kg, i.p) and the prophylactic treatment was started 48 hours after Alloxan injection for 28 days. The protective effect of the treatment with standard (Glibenclamide 0.5mg/kg, p.o) and Stevioside (250 mg/kg. p.o) were analyzed by estimating the serum levels of glucose, urea, creatinine, albumin, total protein, total cholesterol (TCH), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoproteins (HDL) and antioxidants like SOD, catalase and lipid peroxidation. Key Findings: This study demonstrates that Stevioside improved hyperglycemia and maintained antioxidant status and reduced total cholesterol, TG, urea, creatinine and albumin and lipid peroxidation levels when compared to toxic control. The protective effect of Stevioside against Alloxan induced diabetic nephropathy in rats was also supported by histopathologic findings.The results of the present study are encouraging for its potential use to delay the onset and progression of diabetic renal complications. However, the translation of therapeutic efficacy in humans requires further studies.

Diabetes mellitus is a debilitating metabolic disorder and emerged as a major complication nowadays. The role of plants and their derivatives is indispensable in the treatment of various diseases. Azadirachta indica is a medicinal plant and holds a potential to attenuate the pathological changes associated with diabetes. In the present study streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats received the Azadirachta indica leaf extracts (ALE) treatment for a period of seven consecutive days (600 mg/Kg body weight) and then evaluated for changes in the liver tissue. The diabetic rats exhibited significant (p≤0.001) increase in the lipid peroxidation levels, decrease in GSH levels and modulation in the activities of various antioxidant enzymes including catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione-S-transferase. However, following ALE treatment to diabetic rats reported decrease in the blood glucose levels, lipid peroxidation levels, improved GSH levels and restored the activities of various antioxidant enzymes towards control levels. Besides this, light microscopic and ultramicroscopic examination of liver tissue also demonstrated less fragmentation, inflammation and decreased tissue level damage after ALE treatment, and corroborated the results of biochemical parameters. Thus, the results of present study revealed the hepatoprotective potential of Azadirachta indica in diabetes

Objective: In the present study, the antidiabetic and antioxidant study of stem part of Coccinea grandis Voigt plant extracts in Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats were investigated. Materials and methods: Fifty four Wistar albino rats were used with nine groups and with six rats in each group. 45 mg/kg body weight streptozotocin was administered to group 2 to 9. Group 2 was diabetic control. Group 3 was given with glimepiride as standard drug. Group 4 and 5 were given petroleum ether extract 250 and 500 mg/kg respectively. Group 6 and 7 were given 250 and 500 mg/kg chloroform extract respectively. Group 8 and 9 were given 250 and 500 mg/kg hydro alcoholic extract respectively. Antidiabetic activity of the extracts was assessed by serum glucose level on glucose kit. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and lipid peroxidation studies were assessed with histopathology. Result: The chronic study data on diabetic rats cleared the administration of all extracts significantly reduced blood glucose level and lipid peroxidation level with better antioxidant activity. Conclusion: From the study, the petroleum ether, chloroform and hydro alcoholic extracts of stem part of Coccinea grandis Voigt plant have shown antidiabetic and antioxidant potential. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective effect of Radish (Raphanus sativus) seed alcoholic extract 70% against oxidative stress induced by sodium nitrite NaNO2 Twenty five adult male rabbits were devided into five groups of (five rabbits in each group) and treated daily for 30 days. Group T1: intubated orally 20 mg/kg NaNO2, Group T2: intubated orally 20 mg/kg NaNO2 + 50 mg/kg of alcoholic extract from Raphanus sativus seeds, Group T3: intubated orally 20 mg/kg NaNO2 + 100 mg/kg of alcoholic extract from Raphanus sativus seeds, Group T4: intubated orally 20 mg/kg NaNO2 + 200 mg/kg of alcoholic extract from Raphanus sativus seed as well as Group C: control intubated orally distilled water. In comparison with normal rabbits there were significantly increase in the level of Methemoglobin (MetHb%) , lipid peroxidation indicator malondialdehyde (MDA), and significantly decrease in the level of glutathione (GSH) in the rabbits intubated NaNO2. In rabbits intubated NaNO2 + 50,100,200 mg/kg of alcoholic extract it was found there were significant decreased in the level of MetHb%, MDA, and increase in the level of GSH. In conclusion according to results obtained from this study approved that alcoholic extract of Raphanus sativus seeds in dose (50,100,200 mg/kg) have protective effect against oxidative stress induced by sodium nitrite in male rabbits.
