The Obesity and Hypertension are major risk factors of several life threatening diseases in human body. Objectives: To determine correlation coefficient of Body Mass Index with blood pressure: a gender based comparison in medical students. Study Design: Comparative Cross-sectional study in students. Setting: Physiology department of BMU Karachi. Period: Duration of this study was 6 months from February 2017 to August 2017. Material and Methods: A total of 500 students were enrolled in this study. The anthropometric measurement [height (m2) and weight (kg)] was recorded for calculation of the Body Mass Index (BMI) and blood pressure (BP) was measured by using sphygmomanometer with stethoscope. SPSS version 22.0 was used to analyze the data. Results: BMI overall in both genders were significantly (p<0.05) correlated in mean Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) and mean Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP). Underweight and Normal weight were not correlated with both mean SBP and mean DBP in both genders. Overweight subjects were positively correlated with mean DBP in males and mean SBP in females (p<0.05). Obese students were not significantly (p>0.05) correlated with both mean SBP and mean DBP in males whereas, there were not enough observations to draw any meaningful conclusion in females. Conclusion: Overweight subjects were positively correlated (p<0.05) with mean DBP in males and mean SBP in females and overall BMI (mean SBP & mean DBP) in both genders.

ABSTRACT CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Increased life expectancy among people with Down syndrome (DS) has introduced new environmental factors that may affect blood pressure (BP) and/or lead to obesity in this population. The aim here was to investigate BP levels and body mass index (BMI) in adults with DS, correlating these data with the patients' sex and age. DESIGN AND SETTING: Analytical cross-sectional observational study conducted in special schools in Curitiba (PR), Brazil. METHODS: 97 adult patients were included. BP was measured in accordance with the established guidelines. BMI was calculated by dividing the weight by the height squared (kg/m2). RESULTS: Sex had no influence on BMI; nor did systolic BP (SBP) or diastolic BP (DBP). The age range was from 18 to 56 years. No correlation was observed between increasing age and greater BMI or BP. Eighty-six individuals (88.7%) presented normal BP, eleven (11.3%) prehypertension and none hypertension. Twenty patients (20.4%) presented BP lower than 90 × 60 mmHg. BMI ranged from 18 to 48 kg/m2 (mean of 28.8 ± 3.92 kg/m2): 21.9% had normal weight; 40.7% were overweight; and 25.3% had obesity class I, 9.9% class II and 2.2% class III. Higher BMI was associated with significantly greater SBP and DBP (P = 0.0175 and P = 0.0015). CONCLUSION: Sex and age did not influence SBP, DBP or BMI in Brazilian adults with DS. Higher BMI was associated with greater BP (both systolic and diastolic).

Abstract: Obesity is one manifestation of nutritional problems, which need attention. Obesity is a state of excess body fat in absolute terms and relative. In 2000, the Directorate of Community Nutrition Ministry of Health recorded a total population of Indonesia are categorized as obese estimated 76.7 million (17.5%). Many factors play a role in the occurrence of obesity are largely an interaction between genetic factors and environmental factors, such as physical activity, social, economic, and nutrition. The obesity increases the risk of cardiovascular disease because its related with the metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance syndrome or / hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance / diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia, hypertension and other. This study uses a quantitative research design and cross-sectional approach which takes place from July to August, 2015. The total sample of 20 people were taken to the al-Fatah mosque Malalayang aged 9-21 years. The results of the research showed that respondent with weight less amounted to 8 respondent, respondents with normal weight is 10 respondents and it was the highest, respondent with pre-obesity is only one respondent, while respondent with obesity II also only 1 respondents. Conclusion: The results of this study concluded that the image of the body mass index (BMI) mosque al - Fatah Malalayang respondents with less weight have percentage of 40%, respondents with normal weight have a percentage of 45%, respondents with more weight percentage of 15%, the respondents with pre-obese weight have percentage of 5%, and the respondent with weight obesity II have a percentage of 10%.Keywords: obesity, body mass index (BMI), diabetes mellitus (DM).Abstrak: Obesitas merupakan salah satu manifestasi dari masalah gizi lebih, yang perlu mendapatkan perhatian. Pada tahun 2000, Direktorat Bina Gizi Masyarakat Departemen Kesehatan RI mencatat jumlah penduduk Indonesia yang masuk kategori obesitas diperkirakan 76.7 juta (17.5%) . Banyak faktor yang berperan dalam terjadinya obesitas yang sebagian besar merupakan interaksi antara faktor genetik dengan faktor lingkungan, antara lain aktivitas fisik, sosial ekonomi, dan nutrisi. Keadaan obesitas meningkatkan risiko penyakit-penyakit kardiovaskular karena keterkaitanya dengan sindrom metabolik atau atau sindrom resistensi insulin/hiperinsulinemia, intoleransi glukosa/Diabetes Melitus (DM), dyslipidemia, hipertensi dan lainnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian kuantitatif dan pendekatan cross sectional yang berlangsung dari Juli – Agustus 2015. total sampel berjumlah 20 orang yang diambil pada jamaah Masjid Al- Fatah Malalayang yang berusia 19 – 21 tahun. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian didapatkan bahwa responden yang memiki berat badan kurang berjumlah 8 responden, responden dengan berat badan normal 9 responden dan merupakan yang terbanyak, responden dengan pra obesitas 1 responden, sedangkan responden dengan badan obesitas II 2 responden. Simpulan: Dari hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa gambaran Indeks Massa tubuh (IMT) masjid al – fatah malalayang responden dengan berat badan kurang memiliki persentase sebesar 40%, responden dengan berat badan normal memiliki persentase sebesar 45%, responden dengan berat badan lebih memiliki persentase sebesar 15%, responden dengan berat badan pra obesitas memiliki persentase sebesar 5%, Responden dengan berat badan obesitas II memiliki persentase sebesar 10%.Kata kunci: obesitas, indeks massa tubuh (IMT), diabetes mellitus (DM).

Specific ABO blood type was reported to the higher risk of having overweight and obesity. The laters had also been suggested to correlate to blood pressure. Here we studied blood type and blood pressure amongst seemingly healthy university students of IIKBW, Kediri to understand their correlations to the body mass index (BMI). The blood typing (ABO typing, Eryclone®) and blood pressure (automated digital sphygmomanometer) of 74 male and 76 female were measured in duplicate accordingly. The BMI was analysed from the student’s body weight and height using a digital balance and a microtoise staturemeter, respectively. Data were analysed using SPSS 17 with p<0.05 level of significance. There were 18.7% students have A blood type, 31.3% students were B type, 44% were O and 6.0% with AB blood type. There were 30.7% students with obesity, 18% overweight, 36% normal weight and 15.3% underweight. There were 4.7% had a hypertension, 28.7% pre-hypertension, and 66.7% were normal. No significant correlations found between BMI or the blood pressure to any specific ABO blood type, except between the blood pressure and the AB blood type (r=-0.179, p=0.03). However, there was a significant correlation between BMI and blood pressure (r=0.327, p=0.000). We observed no significant associations between any specific ABO blood type with the BMI and blood pressure. However, high blood pressures amongst students with obesity were found. Males were more common to suffer from obesity and high blood pressure than females.

Hypertension is the most common cause of cardiovascular disease and it is a major problem in both developed and developing countries. Obesity is one of the main risk factors of hypertension. Hypertension and obesity are health problems which its prevalence is continues to increase in Indonesia. The anthropometric index that can be used to determine nutritional status are the body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference measurement. This study was an observational analytic with cross sectional method. The sample of this study was 275 respondent who were selected using the consecutive sampling method in Karang Asam public health center Samarinda. Data of this study were obtained from direct measurement of height, weight, waist circumference and blood pressure of respondent and data were analyzed by using chi square test. The result of statistical test showed that there was relationship between body mass index (p = 0,000 ; OR= 5,234 ; 95% CI= 3,090-8,865) and waist circumference (p = 0,000; OR=5,489 ; 95% CI= 3,233 – 9,318) with blood pressure. There was a significant relationship between body mass index and waist circumference with blood pressure at Karang Asam Public Health Center Samarinda.

Background: Body mass index is a valuable tool to assess the nutritional status of an individual. It can be conveniently used to identify those who are underweight, overweight or obese.Objective: To determine the BMI status of medical students.Methods: This cross sectional descriptive study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka from July 2009 to June 2010. A total number of 264 students of both sexes, age ranged from 19 to 21 years were included. A structured questionnaire was used to collect and record the information on age, sex, height in meters and weight in kilograms of each subject. The measurements were taken under supervision using a standardized weighing machine, height measuring scale and measuring tape. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated using the formula weight (in kilogram)/ height2 (in meter). Using cut off points from World Health Organization (WHO) criteria BMI was classified. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS version 16.Result: Mean BMI of male students was 21.64 and of female students was 23.52. In this study, the prevalence of overweight was 20.5% and obesity was 4.5% while 63.6% of the students were within normal weight range and 11.3% were underweight. Among the male students 9.35% were underweight, 76.97% were normal weight, 10.07% were overweight, 3.59% were obese and among female students it was 13.6%, 48.8%, 32% and 4.54% respectively.Conclusion: This study reveals that overweight is a rising problem for both male and female medical students. ABSTRACT Introduction Overweight and obesity are growing healthrelated problems worldwide, and it is currently the most prevalent nutritional disorder among children and adolescents. The objective of this study was to assess the association between overweight and dental caries among 12- to 15-year-old schoolchildren in Mangaluru district, Karnataka, India. Materials and methods Data were obtained from 2000 schoolgoing children aged 12 to 15 years. The children were categorized as overweight and normal-weight group by assessing the body mass index (BMI). Body mass index was categorized using the classification system given by the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) and obtained in units of kg/m2. The dental caries was assessed by detection and was performed according to decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index. Results Of the 2000 children examined, the mean BMI recorded was 26.87 ± 2.26 for the overweight children and 20.82 ± 1.48 for the normal-weight children. Even though the DMFT (3.90 ± 2.95) in the overweight children was slightly higher than the control group (3.36 ± 2.73), it was not statistically significant. Conclusion Within the confines of the present study, it can be concluded that there is no significant association between overweight and dental caries among the schoolchildren of Mangaluru district in Karnataka. Longitudinal studies are necessary to substantiate the possible relationships between dental caries and overweight in children. Knowledge of these relationships could lead to preventive health measures designed to reduce the prevalence of both obesity and dental caries. AbstractObjectivesPhysical inactivity and poor physical fitness in children and adolescents are growing public health problems globally. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between Body Mass Index (BMI) and three physical fitness components, including overall fitness, according to the Swedish Physical power, Mental harmony and Social capacity profile (FMS profile). Another aim was to investigate the test-retest reliability of the FMS questionnaire and fitness tests.MethodsA total of 3,692 male and female adolescents in Sweden, between year 2004 and 2013, aged from 16 to 18 years old, were included. Height and weight data were collected to calculate the Body mass index (BMI). The participants performed physical fitness tests, which measure cardio-respiratory fitness, muscular strength and flexibility. The test-retest study included 18 adolescents, aged 16. They answered the FMS questionnaire and participated in the fitness tests with one-week interval.ResultsA weak inverse relationship between BMI and physical fitness was found: r=−0.06 to −0.07 (p<0.05) for flexibility, r=−0.13 to 0.10 (p<0.001) for strength, r=−0.14 to −0.33 (p<0.001) for cardiorespiratory fitness, and r=−0.15 to −0.27 (p<0.001) for overall fitness. In the test-retest study, the ICC’s for strength, flexibility and balance were 0.94, 0.96 and 0.89, respectively. The ICC’s for the questions regarding lifestyle ranged from 0.75 to 1.00 and for diet, physical activity and drugs were 0.56, 0.44 and 0.58, respectively. The correlation was stronger in overweight/obese individuals compared to normal weight individuals.ConclusionOverweight and obese individuals scored lower in the fitness tests compared to their normal weight counterparts. The test-retest study revealed that the FMS questionnaire and fitness tests are reliable tools.

Objective: To find out the association body mass index (BMI) with breakfast in medical student of Karachi. Study Design: Descriptive Cross-sectional study. Setting: Public Sector Medical Institutes of Karachi. Periods: 1st January to 31st March 2019. Material & Methods: 382 medical students were enrolled after taking informed consent. Data was collected from included students of this study, having age of 18 to 24 years and all medical students having history of lactose intolerance, anorexia nervosa, and food allergies were excluded from study. Data was collected by self made structured questionnaire and anthropometric measurements were collected. Body mass index was calculated as weight (Kg)/height (m)2. Collected data was analyzed by using Statistical package for social sciences version 22. Results: The mean age and mean Body mass index of studied samples were 20.83±1.54, and 15.53±3.5 respectively. Most of the participants were females and they belong to underweight category (BMI ≤ 18.5) of body mass index. The participants did breakfast were 81.4% and omit or skip breakfast was 18.6%. The habit of breakfast skippers was mostly in females (85.9%) and in males was 14.1%. The Body mass index (BMI) had as statistically significant (p<0.05) association with breakfast. Conclusion: The majority of medical students were females and habit of skipping breakfast most common in them, so body mass index were <18.5 kg/m2 in them and the Body mass index had as statistically significant (p<0.05) association with breakfast.
