A challenge for hospitals in facing the high number of patient visits is to provide quality services. One of the vital services in dealing with patients, especially those who will have cancer surgery considering the high rate of mortality cancer, is an improvement in waiting time (WT). Waiting time for elective surgery is one indicator of service quality with a standard of ≤2 days. This research aimed to determine the average WT for surgery, influencing factors, and optimal queuing models. The method used was quantitative and qualitative methods applied to 207 samples with consecutive sampling at West Java Provincial Al-Ihsan Regional General Hospital Bandung from October to December 2016. The analysis used partial least squares (PLS). The results of the study showed that the average WT for surgery was 32 days. Factors that influence WT were inpatient rooms, number of medical personnel, condition of patients, and health insurance. The optimal queue model to reduce surgical waiting time are adding inpatient beds, oncologist doctor, and creating an online system for registration and confirmation of inpatient rooms and operating.

Time theory studies abstractly argue that, depending on the customer experience, time spent waiting may be positive, negative, or even neutral, and it can affect the perceived passing of time and enjoyment of the overall customer experience. However, a company can manipulate customer perceptions of waiting time. Positive perceptions of waiting time can then be used for marketing purposes. Customer perceptions of waiting time can be reduced by making the queuing process enjoyable, by improving the waiting environment, and by making promotional activities enjoyable. To validate the aforementioned factors and develop the enjoyable queuing model, this study surveyed 1571 customers queuing at service companies in Taiwan, including 409 customers of upscale restaurants, 430 customers of restaurants, 439 customers of food stands, and 293 customers queuing at consumer electronics shops to purchase newly released iPhones. The applicability of the enjoyable queuing model was evaluated by partial least squares structural equation modeling, and group differences were evaluated by partial least squares multi-group analysis. The analytical results for each case and managerial implications are presented.

With an increasing number of privately own vehicles in Malaysia, the popularity of public transports is increasingly challenged by ride-hailing services such as Grab, MyCar, JomRides and MULA. To develop effective strategies aimed at retaining users, it is necessary to understand the factors that affect users’ satisfaction and loyalty in public transport. In this study, we propose that satisfaction and loyalty in public transport are associated with five key factors: accessibility, reliability, perceived value, comfort, and safety and security. Data collected from a survey of 179 public transport users in Kuching city was used to test the research model. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyse the data. The main findings were that safety and security, and reliability significantly affected the users’ satisfaction and loyalty in public transport, while no statistically significant relationship was found among accessibility, satisfaction and loyalty. These findings not only contribute to the theory development of transportation research but also help practitioners to develop novel strategies aimed at increasing public transport usage.

Kuningan Regency is one of the districts in West Java Province with a high rate of landslide events, especially in the southern part where its hilly landscape is dominated with a steep slope. Due to its vulnerability because of cracked soil after the landslide events, landslide locations in Kuningan Regency might only be safe if surveyed using the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Therefore, in this study, DJI Phantom 4 Pro was flown to capture images of landslide locations with a 10 cm spatial resolution. Image processing was conducted to generate Orthophoto and Digital Surface Model (DSM) to give information about the direction and area of landslides. Two sub-districts where landslides occurred, namely Darma and Selajambe, were chosen for landslide mapping using UAV. Results show that in Darma Sub-district, the landslide area is approximately 7,026 m2, while in Selajambe Sub-district is around 8,699 m2. The study results are very useful to analyze the factors affecting landslide events such as slope.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between skills and employability of business graduates. The study also examines the moderating effect of ‘social mobility factors’ in the ‘skills–employability’ relationship.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative positivist approach was undertaken to test the hypotheses. Business graduates from two universities in a developing country responded to a questionnaire about their perceptions of different sets of employability factors. Partial least squares (PLS)-based structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to examine the relationships between skills and employability of business graduates.FindingsThe findings show that both soft skills and technical skills are positively related to employability, which is consistent with prior studies. The findings also indicate that social mobility factors play a significant role in employability.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is based on data from two public universities, and its findings need to be interpreted with care as universities differ in their size, area of concentration and ownership structure.Practical implicationsThe findings advance the evidence of graduate employability of business students. Based on these results, university authorities, policymakers, teachers and business graduates will benefit from the findings related to students preparedness for the competitive global job market.Originality/valueThe study's findings contribute to business graduates' skill set development in the developing countries that share a similar education system, culture and values.
