Considering the devalued role of social science disciplines in the current economic context and low wages of related-field professions in the workplace, it is argued that they still remain the most preferred options among students at the time of starting their higher education studies. Hence it is critical to identify the elements in the life trajectories of students that influence their professional training choice of the social sciences disciplines and professions. In Britain, social workers are trained on a variety of courses in colleges of further education, polytechnics and universities. Some of these courses are intended primarily for non-graduates and last two-years, others are four year undergraduate courses combining a first degree with professional training, and the remainder are at postgraduate level. Students in the last group may have graduated in any discipline from the humanities or the physical, biological or social sciences, many have degrees which included the study of psychology for one, two or three years, and some of these are honours graduates in this subject. The postgraduate social work courses last one or two years depending on the subjects covered in the students' first degrees.

When Social Work became systematized and organized after Mary Richmond, it was described as a different research program within the social sciences (Lakatos, 1999). It was different because it considered the theoretical propositions in the social sciences from historically determined and existentially positioned circumstances, thereby creating new perspectives on those theoretical propositions (Méndez, 2006) and because through professional practice Social Work assesses and highlights the problem of the real and potential consequences of the use of knowledge in the construction of social practices (Dewey, 1967), whether discursive or non-discursive.As Social Work presents the emergence of peoples own discourse and documents the reality of social practices while it also presents statements which are neither true nor false as necessary truths, Social Work should be watched and disarmed in its consequences.Discourse is not the means through which fights are established in our discourse society; it is discourse that is fought about. If discourse is that power we wish to get hold of (Foucault, 1983), then the social sciences should not ignore the discourse of Social Work.

Professional social work is a discipline in which practitioners often find themselves engaged in addressing issues related to illness, crises, and loss. Professional social work is also a discipline with links to many associated disciplines, especially those in the social sciences such as psychology, sociology, and gerontology, as well as provision of care in such fields as hospice/palliative care, bereavement support, and counseling. Exploring some aspects of educational programs for professional social workers may help illuminate how professionals are prepared to function in many of these disciplines and areas of human services. This article offers a critical analysis of one limited but important aspect of the education offered to social work students, namely how the work of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and her five stages model are presented in five recent social work textbooks. In each case, there is a description and critical analysis of what authors of these five books write about these subjects. These analyses lead to suggestions concerning how these subjects should or should not be presented in educational programs for students and as guidelines for practice in social work, associated disciplines, and related areas of human services.

Emotional intelligence and problem solving are of great importance for social work, as this is largely an emotionally demanding and stressful profession as well as an applied scientific field of psychosocial problem solving. The aim of this research was to investigate the emotional intelligence of social work students in relation to their demographics and study-related characteristics, and their problem-solving skills. The sample included 368 students from the bachelor’s degree programme of the Department of Social Work of the University of West Attica in Athens, Greece. The students completed both the Problem Solving Inventory (PSI) and Wong Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS). The results show a strong correlation between emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills and suggest that emotional intelligence plays a very important role in decision making, action taking and good performance in social work. Implications for additional research and education of bachelor level social work students are discussed.

Given the emotive context of social work practice, acquiring competence can be challenging. Professional aptitude involves prowess in analytical thinking and controlling emotions, however, this can create conflict within the therapeutic relationship. For trainees, analytical thinking and managing emotions are difficult skills to attain and are not always directly taught, leaving individuals to their own devices to develop possibly ineffective, strategies for dealing with complex emotions and resulting stress. As evidence suggests social workers are vulnerable to burnout, thus managing work-related stress becomes a career-long necessity and, if not managed, has serious consequences for organisations and service users and workers themselves. To address this gap, we piloted mindfulness sessions based on Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programme (MBSR) with final year social work students. These sessions are being increasingly and successfully used in a wide variety of organisations across the globe and there is an increasing body of research evidencing numerous benefits for those involved. Feedback from our students suggests these sessions produced a number of personal and professional benefits and includes promoting their resilience and conscious competence.

Abstract–Social work in Chile during the Reconceptualization period presented deep changes, in a context of high social effervescence. At the turn of the 1960s to the 1970s, the consolidation of the working class and left-wing parties led Chile to become the first country in the world to conquerthe government by electoral means, with a program building towards socialism. In a context of intensification of social struggles, Chilean social work established relationships and stances, producing a rich reflection of teachers, students, and professionals in relation to professional training and intervention. This article is the first delivery of results of an ongoing research that reviews the relationship of Social Service with social movements and struggles based on the analysis of final papers for graduation and articles fromRevista de Trabajo Social, from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Keywords: popular unity; Social Service;reconceptualization;social struggles; Chile. Abstract The demand for professional training, mentorship, and research in the field of aging is expected to increase remarkably. Recent statistics indicate less than 8% of social work students nationwide specialize in gerontology; however, a significant amount of social work graduates, regardless of their specialization at school, serve older adults in various social and health care settings. As a panel, former fellows present experiences as participants of the AGESW Pre-Dissertation Fellows Program. The program helps students comprehend basic principles of doctoral education and develop strong professional networks with other gerontology-focused colleagues and mentors across the country. Doctoral students are also trained to be competent working with older adults through research, teaching, and professional development. Many fellows move into faculty positions and their accomplishments are varied and impressive. It is difficult to separate these from the education, connections, mentorship, and support received from the AGESW network and through participation in this program.
