The experimental design of this study was included (12) Friesian calves aged between 3-5 weeks. Calves were divided into two groups. Group I consisted of (8) calves were infected experimentally with 1.5 x 10“ of Salmonella typhimurium and often that treatment with chloramphenicol and electrolytes fluid were takes place. Group II consisted of (4) calves were infected with organisms but without treatment. The clinical findings of the disease were characterized by two forms which includes the septicemic and enteric forms. Haematological changes revealed a variable number of the total and differential leukocytic count, increased PCV, fibnnogen and decreased of the total plasma protein. . The changes in the acid-based balance indicate the development of metabolic acidosis.

ABSTRACT Vomiting and diarrhea are two important clinical signs that can cause significant electrolytic and acid-base imbalances. The purposes of this study were to characterize hydric, electrolytic and acid-base disorders presented by puppies with hemorrhagic gastroenteritis and to compare the traditional and quantitative approaches to acid-base status interpretation. Sixty-one animals with a history of vomiting and/or diarrhea were used in this study and the following tests were performed: complete blood count, total plasma protein concentration and hemogasometry. Mean, standard deviation and Kappa values were calculated. The imbalances characterized by both approaches were: 42 (69%) animals without imbalance, 17 (28%) with metabolic alkalosis and 2 (3%) with metabolic acidosis by the traditional approach and 17 (28%) dogs without imbalance, 26 (43%) with metabolic alkalosis and 18 (29%) with metabolic acidosis by the quantitative approach. The agreement calculated between two approaches coincide in 28 cases, with a moderate Kappa value equivalent to 0.459. The most found imbalances were metabolic alkalosis, hypokalemia, and mild dehydration. Most of acid-base disturbances were not identified by the traditional approach, whereas by the quantitative approach, they were easily determined. Thus quantitative approach proved to be superior in identification of possible acid-base imbalances.

The use of haematological techniques to assess fish health is generally accepted. The aim of the current study was to determine selected haematological changes that occur in Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822). infected with trypanosomes. Blood films were prepared according to standard techniques to confirm trypanosome infections and whole blood was collected, the serum and plasma separated, and prepared for albumin and total protein concentration analysis. Plasma albumin levels were significantly higher in infected wild caught fish than in uninfected wild caught fish and uninfected breeding stock. Serum albumin levels were significantly lower in infected wild caught fish when compared to uninfected breeding stock. The total plasma and serum protein levels were within the normal range for C. gariepinus, that is, 3 g – 6 g/100 mL. The total plasma protein levels varied significantly between the three groups. However, the total serum protein levels were only significantly different between uninfected breeding stock and uninfected wild caught fish, as well as uninfected breeding stock and infected wild caught fish. The total protein levels were significantly higher in infected wild caught fish than in the other groups, a possible indication of an infection or inflammatory host response.

We hypothesized that, during isosmotic isonatremic HCl acidosis with maintained isocapnia in cisternal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), acetazolamide, by inhibiting carbonic anhydrase (CA) in the central nervous system (CNS), should produce an isonatric hyperchloric metabolic acidosis in CSF. Blood and CSF ions and acid-base variables were measured in two groups of anesthetized and paralyzed dogs with bilateral ligation of renal pedicles during 5 h of HCl acidosis (plasma [HCO3-] = 11 meq/l). Mechanical ventilation was regulated such that arterial PCO2 dropped and CSF Pco2 remained relatively constant. In group I (control group, n = 6), CSF [Na+] remained unchanged, [HCO3-] and strong ions difference (SID) fell, respectively, 6.1 and 5 meq/l, and [Cl-] rose 3.5 meq/l after 5 h of acidosis. In acetazolamide-treated animals, (group II, n = 7), CSF [Na+] remained unchanged, [HCO3-], and SID fell 11 and 7.1 meq/l, respectively, and [Cl-] rose 7.1 meq/l. We conclude that during HCl acidosis inhibition of CNS CA by acetazolamide induces an isonatric hyperchloric metabolic acidosis in CSF, which is more severe than that observed in controls.

We used pH-sensitive double-barreled microelectrodes to measure brain extracellular fluid (ECF) pH in anesthetized dogs during isocapnic infusion acidosis (HCl) and alkalosis (Na2CO3) of 45-60 min duration. The diameter of the tips of these electrodes varied from less than 1 to 27 micron and were placed 5 mm below the surface of the parietal cortex. In group I (metabolic acidosis, n = 5) mean plasma and brain ECF pH fell significantly by 0.221 and 0.025, respectively, with changes in brain ECF pH being 11.3% of those noted in plasma. In group II (metabolic alkalosis, n = 5) mean plasma and brain ECF pH rose significantly by 0.170 and 0.049, respectively, with changes in brain ECF pH being 28.8% of those noted in plasma. Mean arterial and sagittal venous PCO2 and cisternal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) acid-base variables did not change significantly during acid or base infusion. We conclude that during transients of isocapnic metabolic acid-base perturbations ionic gradients exist between brain ECF and CSF and that changes in brain ECF pH measured by microelectrodes follow the changes in plasma pH. These pH changes may play an important role in respiratory adaptations of acute metabolic acidosis and alkalosis.

Compared with monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), which requires electrolyte-free irrigation fluid, normal saline can be used as the irrigation solution in bipolar and laser TURP. The risk of TURP syndrome and severe electrolyte disturbance is minimized when normal saline is used as the irrigation fluid. However, the use of isotonic saline also causes acid-base imbalance and electrolyte disturbance. We experienced two patients who developed hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis during bipolar TURP. After proper intervention, hemodynamic instability resolved, and laboratory test results normalized. Anesthesiologists must pay attention to acid-base and electrolyte status when rapid absorption of excessive isotonic solution is suspected, even during bipolar and laser TURP, which use normal saline as the irrigation fluid.

Women giving birth in in-patient maternity units are required to complete certain education. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of prompting on post-partum women’s education engagement (time from assignment to completion) while testing the feasibility of staff nurses assisting in research. A quasi-experimental design was used with 141 women allocated by admission date to one of three groups (usual care and two intervention) between September 2014 and December 2015. Intervention group I women were quickest to engage in their education and had the shortest length of stay. Significance was found for academic attainment ( df = 1, F = 6.218, p = .014), partial eta squared = 0.053 and R2 = 0.124. Women who had attended college engaged more quickly in all groups than those who had not. This statistically significant finding indicates how nurses can identify patients needing more assistance. Nurses reported no adverse effects on care.

✓ Acid-base and gas parameters of CSF, jugular venous and arterial blood were measured in 45 patients with brain injury in the first 12 days after trauma or operation. CSF metabolic acidosis together with respiratory alkalosis and hypoxemia in the cerebral venous and arterial blood were the most characteristic findings. A close correlation between the severity of brain damage and the intensity of the CSF metabolic acidosis and arterial hypocapnia was revealed. It was concluded that brain hypoxia and acidosis play an important role in the development of cerebral edema and permanent brain damage.
