Digital past, present, and future of mining industry

The process of introducing digital technologies in mining has an evolutionary character and began with the appearance of electronic computing machines at large enterprises, design and scientific organizations. At the initial stage, solving the tasks of mining technology with the use of computers was mainly of demonstration character. Development of works in this branch has led to differentiation of the general task into separate areas: mining-geological information systems (MGIS); geomechanical safety ensuring systems; dispatching systems; programs for solving individual tasks of mining technology. One of the most important directions of digital transformation is mining-geological information systems (MGIS), the development of which went, as a rule, from solving tasks of deposit reserves estimation to modeling of mining technology objects, tools for solving surveying tasks, design and planning of mining works. Evaluating the functionality of MGIS known in the Russian market, we can state that the achieved development level generally meets the requirements of a Digital Mine - the way of representation of objects and processes of mining technology as digital models describing the properties and behaviour of real objects in a single digital space of the enterprise. The next stage of digital transformation is a Digital Twin, which can be characterized as a Digital Mine that has on-line communication links between real equipment units and their digital models. Creation of the Digital twin implies real-time reproduction of the natural-engineering system functioning, reflecting its actual or forecasted state.

The article analyzes the contradictory impact of digitalization on the development of the economy and society. It is argued that the process of digital transformation of business has led to the emergence of new threats, which include the following types of risks: the risk of violating the confidentiality of information, cybersecurity of information systems, the risk of losing control over information flows; the risk of damage to reputation and brand by social media; the risk of a "gap" in HR potential associated with limited staff competencies (or lack thereof) in the field of digitalization.

The issues of import substitution of geoinformation systems used in the geological industry when creating sets of State geological maps of the scale of 1:1,000,000 and 1:200,000 are considered. The current state of the issue is described. Additional functionality is indicated, which is necessary for the construction and preparation for publication of digital models of the maps of the set. Examples of domestic GIS are given, which can replace the foreign analogues in use. The problems and difficulties arising in this case were revealed. The ways of their solution are suggested.

The main challenges facing modern cities initiate review of approaches to management of city development. Combining of information systems and “smart” equipment used in various spheres of activity is analyzed. It causes digitization of social and economic processes which are not the optimal ones, and management mistakes are transferred to the sphere of digital transformation. In this research it is proposed to consider the development of digital platforms of a “smart city” according to systematic transformation of social and economic processes into the view optimal for management whilst taking into account psychological and cognitive characteristics of city dwellers. This issue may be solved by creating digital platforms of a new class which are based on neural management of knowledge and artificial intellect.

In this paper the potential impact of digital transformation in general and digital twin applications on the Product Management Process (PMP) in particular will be investigated. The object is to figure out the potential benefits of digital twin utilization. Methodologically, a conceptual and analytical approach are applied in using statistical data, surveys, latest literature and logical conclusions. Thus, the approach is twofold: from the conceptual point of view the different types of digital twins are introduced; from the analytical point of view different applications in different stages of the PMP will be subject to investigation. So, this paper can be categorized as conceptual paper based on an extensive literature research. The findings of research revealed that the digital transformation can offer various benefits for the PMP. It can be summarized that in all phases of the PMP potential benefits can be identified. The most important is saving time and money, avoiding waste of physical resources and simultaneously raising quality, reliability and competitive advantage. Regarding the originality value it can be stated that this is the first comprehensive examination of the entire PMP with regard to digital transformation in order to identify sources of potential benefits.
