This research was focused on taboo words used in Deli Javananese dialect. It was aimed at describing the classification of taboo words used in Deli Javanese dialect namely sex; death; excretion; bodily functions; religious matters; and politics and to investigate how frequent the taboo words were used by Javanese community in Karang Sari village of Medan city, North Sumatera.  The descriptive qualitative method was applied by describing taboo words used by the Javanese communtiy. The approach is sociolinguistics, which studies the perspectives of using taboo words among society in Deli Javanese dialect. The data were collected by interviewing three informants with different ages, and taking a note to identify the data of this research. The result showed that there were 18 taboo words found in Deli Javanese dialect and they were classified into six types of taboo word as mentioned before. It also showed that the causes of using taboo words were to express the emotion, such as anger, happiness, and surprises, to talk about sex, to joke and to insult. Hopefully all the findings may give some contributions and references for any further researches related to the use of taboo words within any language and also as communication guidance especially for speakers not to use taboo words.

“Wa Ndiundiu” adalah dongeng yang dibangun melalui pergumulan karakter tokohnya. Setiap tokoh menampilkan watak sesuai kondisi kejiwaannya. Psikologi sastra adalah kajian yang memandang sastra sebagai aktivitas kejiwaan pelakunya. Permasalahan penelitian adalah bagaimanakah struktur kepribadian, kecemasan, dan klasifikasi emosi empat tokoh “Wa Ndiundiu”? Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan empat karakter tokoh “Wa Ndiundiu” menggunakan teori psikoanalisis Sigmund Freud. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Penulis menganalisis data dengan pendekatan tekstual, mengkaji aspek psikologisnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tokoh Ayah adalah akumulasi karakter yang diliputi kecemasan, tanatos, dominasi id, kemarahan, dan kebencian. Wa Turungkoleo memiliki cinta, kesedihan, dan eros. Kecemasan terkendali oleh ego dan superego-nya. La Mbatambata dikuasai alam bawah sadar dan fase id, muasal dorongan primitif yang belum dipengaruhi kebudayaan. Tokoh Wa Ndiundiu menghimpun beragam kerumitan kejiwaan. Antara id, ego, dan superego saling bersitegang dalam jiwanya. Tiga kecemasan, eros, dan tanatos hadir sekaligus dalam dirinya. Beragam klasifikasi emosi tersebut memengaruhi tindakannya.Abstract:Wa Ndiundiu is a kind of folktale built through the struggle of its characters. Every character shows  some characterizations based on their psychological condition. Literary psy- chology is used to describe psychological fact of their characters. The problems of the study are to find how the structure of personality, the anxiety, the emotional classification of Wa Ndiundiu’s four characters are.  The study is intended to describe the personality of four characters in “Wa Ndiundiu” by using Sigmund Freud Psychoanalysis. This study uses descriptive qualitative method. The writer analyzes the data by applying textual approach. The results of the analysis show that the first character “Ayah” is a character with anxiety, tanatos, id, madness, and hatred. The sec- ond character “Wa Turungkoleo” is a character that has love, sadness, and eros. Her anxiety can be controlled by her ego and super ego. The third character, La Mbatambata is still driven by his subconscious mind and id phase as a place of primitive stimulus which is influenced by the culture. The fourth character, Wa Ndiundiu collects the entire psychological situation in her characteriza- tion. Three types of anxiety, eros, and tanatos exist in her characterization. Many types of emo- tional feeling influence her action.

This reserached was aimed to figure out the interpersonal functions of taboo words  in Vacation movie. Descriptive qualitative method was emploed in this research since the data were non-numerical data and the results of the research were explained in description which can be in forms of words, sentences, discourse, picture, etc. This research employed simak and catat technique to collect the data from Vacation movie. This is a technique for achieving data through listening carefully and then followed by taking note. In this research, the writer did the simak and catat technique by watching and listening to the movie carefully and then noted some words which were categorized as taboo words. Then, the data were analyzed and classified to figure out their interpersonal functions based on the theory of Zhao and Zhang (2016). As the result, there are at least three interpersonal functions of taboo words which are used and uttered by the characters in the Vacation movie. The interpersonal functions of taboo words which are found in the Vacation movie are to strengthen power and intensity, to vent pent-up emotions, and to show the acquaintance and intimacy.

Abstract: Indonesians and Americans have the strategies to respond the compliment which came from different culture. The aims of this research were addressing types of strategies and disclosing the direct and indirect response used by the Indonesians and Americans to respond the compliments. The research data consist of English and Indonesian. The data was analyzed by using qualitative method. The Discourse Completion Test (DCT) questionnaire was used to know the differences between compliment response given to Indonesians and Americans. The result of the research showed that the (1) responded category of Holmes (1986) classification of compliment responses strategies (CRs) are using three strategies (accept, reject and evade) among Indonesians and Americans. Indonesians tended to accept, reject and evade compliment by giving some reasons. While Americans tended using three categories by saying, "thank you" due to express of openness and receiving appreciation from the interlocutor. (2) The existence of culture plays an important role in responding compliment towards Indonesians and Americans. The Americans respond to compliments direct response and simple answers to compliments. Meanwhile, Indonesians prefer to respond compliment with indirect responses because they were leaning on the principle known as saving face politeness.

This study entitled The Use of Singlish Discourse Particle ‘lah’ in SGAG’s Videos is aimed to analyze the types and function of discourse particle in SGAG’s videos. The data were taken from the conversation in SGAG’s video collection. Descriptive qualitative method was applied to analyze the types and functions of discourse particle ‘lah’. The theories used to analyze it are the classification of the type of discourse particle theory by Wong, role of particles theory by Ling and Deterding and Context of Situation by Halliday. The result of analysis shows that there were 62 discourse particle lah in the SGAG’s video collection from May 28th 2017 until October 10th 2017. The major type of discourse particle lah was Propositional lah (33 occurrences) and the function is more often as a pragmatic role (56 occurrences) rather than a syntactic function (6 occurrences).

This study is entitled Illocutionary Acts of Modal Auxiliary Can in HBO Series Game of Thrones. This study is aimed at analyzing and classifying the types of illocutionary act and its force through the modal auxiliary can in Game of Throne Series. Besides, this study also tries to explain the context of situation that supports the illocutionary act in Game of Throne Series.The library research was used to collect the data which carried modal auxiliary can from the TV series and descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data. The Taxonomy of Illocutionary Acts proposed by Searle (1979) about classification of illocutionary act was used to classify the data and classify them to the types of the acts with the purpose to know the force of the illocutionary acts. Theory of context of situation proposed by Halliday was applied to show how the context of situation (field of discourse, tenor of discourse, and mode of discourse) support the illocutionary  acts found in Game of Throne Series.The result of the analysis showed that there were five types of illocutionary acts found in Game of Throne Series, they are; assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The forces  found in the analysis are; suggesting, telling, stating, asking, entreating, promising, attitudes, refusing, intending, complaining, defying, and declaring.

This research dealt with the identification of taboo language in Malay Panai Language of Labuhan Bilik Dialect. It is a language spoken by people living in Labuhan Bilik village, Panai Tengah district, Labuhan Batu, Rantau Prapat. The objective of this research was to describe the classification of the taboo words in Malay Panai Language of Labuhan Bilik Dialect (MPLLBD). The research applied was descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected through observation, recording, and field notes. Then, the data were analyzed by identifying taboo words and categorizing them into the types of taboo words. Thus, each of the taboo words were presented in some examples of utterances in the language. Some words were considered taboo or not depending on the context in which they were used. The finding shows that taboo words in MPLLBD could be either implicit or explicit. In conclusion, there were some classifications of taboo words in the language which were related to the utterances of sex, death, excretion, body function, religion, animals, vague words, and disease.

The research dealt with taboo words in Deapool movie. The objectives of research aimed at explaining the types of taboo words and also to figure out motives of using taboo words in Deadpool movie. The research conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. This study was different from previous researcher that found types and function of taboo words while in this study focused on types and motives of using taboo words. The data were taken from the utterances that contain taboo words by first main character in this movie. There were 82 taboo words that had been uttered in this movie. From nine types of taboo words, there were eight of them, they were Cursing 2,44 %, Profanity 3,66 %, Obscenity 40,24%, Vulgarity 6,10 %, Insults and slurs 9,76 %, Slang 12,20 %, Epithets 20,73 %, and Scatology 2,44 %. And for the motives of using taboo words, there were five from five motives of them, they were Angry or Frustration 30,48 %, Descriptive- evaluative 43,90 %, Joking 7,32 %, Surprise 14,64 %, and Sarcastic Irony Insults 3,66 %.

This research discussed about  taboo language in Batak Toba language at Pajak Sore Padang Bulan Medan which aimed to find out the types, the impacts of  taboo language expression towards customers, and how Bataknese society perceptions towards their taboo language. This research was based on Mahmoud’s theory. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from 25 conversations of male and female participants who become sellers and customers in Traditional Market. The findings showed that there were 25 data, 20 data for the types and the impacts, 5 data for Bataknese society perceptions. The dominant types from taboo words in Batak Toba language is Insult and Slurs with 7 expressions, second is scatology with 5 expressions, followed by epithets with 3 expressions, vulgarity with 1 expression, obscenity with 1 expression. Batak sellers is the dominant use taboo language because it was their habit when they were angry but sometimes it is also a part of their close relationship, it means that how close their relationship, so they can used the taboo language. In the analyzed of the impacts of taboo language towards customers, the dominant impacts were people got offended easily and sometimes they become the people who have the irrational thinking. There were 5 perceptions of Bataknese society perceptions about their taboo language and the dominant perception were sellers and customers could not receive taboo words because they still thought that the language could have a bad impact on children because they would replicate and pronounce the taboo language.

This study is aimed at revealing the types and functions of taboo words uttered by the characters in Alpha dog movie. This study is under the concern of sociolinguistics, which is a branch of linguistics studying language and its functions in society. It also employed a descriptive qualitative method using the researcher and a data sheet as the research instruments. The data of this study were the words, phrases, clauses, and sentences uttered by the characters of Alpha Dog movie and were collected by simak dan catat technique. The data then were analyzed by referential analysis technique. The data triangulations were also employed to confirm the validity of the data. This study reveals the type of taboo words uttered by the characters of Alpha dog movie can be classified into four; Epithet (EP), Profanity (PR), Vulgarity (VU), and Obscenity (OB). The functions of the words were classified into four; to draw attention to oneself (TDA), to show contempt (TSC), to be provocative (TBP) and to mock authority (TMA).

The purposes of this research are to determine the types of taboo words, the functions of taboo words, and in what context taboo words are uttered by the characters in the TV series. This study employed descriptive qualitative method. The sources of the data were 8 videos from the first season of Sex Education TV series and their transcripts. In analyzing the data, the theory of Wardhaugh (2014) was used to describe types and functions of taboo words and the theory of Fromkin (2005) to describe in what context taboo words are uttered in the TV series. The results of this research show that there are data of taboo words which are categorized into seven types; they are sex term, death, excretion, bodily function, religious matter, mother-in-law, and the left hand. The findings suggest that the characters use taboo words mostly to draw attention and to show contempt.
