Objective We aimed to assess the associations between problematic smartphone use, unhealthy behaviors, and mental health status among adolescents.Methods The data for this cross-sectional study were obtained from the 13th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2017). From among the 62,276 adolescents who participated in this nationwide web-based survey, 54,603 (87.7%) who used smartphones were selected as the study population. Unhealthy behaviors included smoking, drinking, physical inactivity, skipping breakfast, and fast food consumption. For the examination of mental health status, we considered sleep disturbances, stress, depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. The associations between problematic smartphone use, unhealthy behaviors, and mental health were analyzed using multiple logistic regression analyses.Results More than four hours of use on weekdays (31.3%) and weekends (61.3%) and the use of smartphones for communication (46.9%) were associated with unhealthy behaviors and mental health problems. Furthermore, adolescents who experienced conflicts with family (22.3%) and friends (25.8%) and academic problems (3.4%) were likely to have health problems.Conclusion The results suggest that problematic smartphone use may disrupt adolescents’ health. Therefore, there is a need for prevention programs for problematic smartphone use at home and at school to improve adolescents’ health.

Mental health is an essential component of adolescent health and wellbeing. Mental health practitioners assess adolescents’ mental health status to identify possible issues that may lead to mental health problems. However, very few of the tools used to assess the mental health status of adolescents include assessment for grieving and coping patterns. The current tools used for assessing an individual’s mental health are lengthy and not comprehensive. The purpose of this study was to assess grieving patterns of adolescents orphaned by AIDS and to appraise the sefulness of an event history calendar as an assessment tool for identifying grieving experiences, in order to guide and support these adolescents through the grieving process. One hundred and two adolescents aged 14–18 years, who had been orphaned by AIDS, completed an event history calendar, reviewed it with the researcher and reported their perceptions of it. Thematic analysis of the event history calendar content revealed that it is an effective, time-efficient, adolescent-friendly tool that facilitated identification and discussion of the orphaned adolescents’ grieving patterns. Crying, isolation, silence and violent outbursts were the main grieving patterns reported by adolescents orphaned by AIDS. The researcher recommends use of the event history calendar for identification of orphaned adolescents’ grieving experiences. Early identification would enable mental health practitioners to support them in order to prevent the occurrence of mental illness due to maladaptive grieving.

Background: The whole world became still, when a major pandemic COVID-19 started its toll across all developed and developing countries. It has caused both physical and emotional disturbances among all age groups. This study was done to evaluate the parental mental health in COVID-19 as this group is not given much importance. The major mental health problems associated with COVID-19 among parents are due to online classes which has caused depression, anxiety and stress.Methods: A cross-sectional study done among all parents, especially those of whose children are attending online class were included in the study. Convenient sampling was used to select 204 participants, GHQ 12 questionnaire was used for data collection on mental health status among parents.Results: Overall prevalence of parents with better mental health <19 was 108 (52.9%) and prevalence of parents with poor mental health >19 was 96 (47.1%).Conclusions: This study concluded that parental age of 31 to 40 years who are employed and have children studying in primary school to have a poor mental health status. The most important contributing factors for poor parental health were online classes for children and work place stress.

Newly released 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System data and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC)’2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Summary and Trends Report show that US adolescents continue to suffer from poor mental health and suicidality at alarming rates. These data alone would be cause for concern, but the COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to further erode adolescent mental health, particularly for those whose mental health was poor prior to the pandemic. Given the status of adolescent mental health prior to COVID-19 and the impact of COVID-19, health professionals and schools must partner together now to mitigate potentially deleterious health, mental health and education impacts for children and adolescents.

ObjectiveTo examine the association between concussion history and suicidal behaviors in adolescents from the 2017 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).BackgroundResearch indicates that behavioral changes such as impulsivity and lack of emotional control are common following youth concussion. Additional evidence suggests that poor behavioral regulation may contribute to altered mood states that precede possible self-injury or fatality. To date, the relation between adolescent concussion and suicidal behaviors has not been explored on a national scale.Design/MethodsData from 14,765 high school students were cross-sectionally analyzed. Weighted multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to estimate adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of suicidal behaviors in students with and without a history of concussion. Age, sex, and alcohol use were controlled for in the regression model.ResultsAdolscents with history of concussion were at greater odds of reporting suicidal ideation (AOR = 1.39, CI 1.16, 1.65), suicide planning (AOR = 1.34, CI 1.14, 1.57), suicidal attempts (AOR = 1.68, CI 1.36, 2.09), and injurious suicidal attempts (AOR = 2.42, CI 1.82, 3.22). In addition, females with a history of concussion demonstrated greater odds of reporting poor mental health than males with history of concussion (p’s < 0.05). Further, history of concussion among individuals aged 16 years or older was significantly associated with increased suicidal behaviors, whereas this association was not observed in younger adolescents (p’s < 0.05).ConclusionsOur findings indicate that adolescents who sustain a concussion have greater odds of suicidality than their uninjured counterparts. Further, suicidality was better predicted by concussion exposure in females than males, and in older students. Consequently, these results indicate the importance of examining mental health following youth concussion, and highlight the need for further longitudinal research.

The relative burden of mental health problems in children is increasing worldwide. Family meals have attracted attention as an effective modifiable factor for preventing children’s mental health problems. We examined the relationship between family meals and mental health problems in Japanese elementary schoolchildren. A cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted with guardians of children aged 7 to 12 years in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Frequency of family meals and with whom the child eats breakfast, lunch, and dinner were assessed separately for weekdays and weekends/holidays. Mental health was assessed using the Japanese version of the parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Multivariate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for borderline/abnormal mental health status were calculated using logistic regression analysis. Of the 678 children, 24.9% had borderline/abnormal mental health status. Children eating breakfast with their family less than once a week (adjusted OR, 4.79; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.51–15.25) and those eating weekend breakfast alone (adjusted OR, 3.61; 95% CI, 1.42–9.23) had a higher prevalence of borderline/abnormal mental health status compared to those eating breakfast seven times a week and weekend breakfast with their family, respectively. These results suggest that family meals, especially breakfast, might be positively associated with better mental health in children.

 AbstractMental health is covered with prosperity where retail can cause a bad situation in his life, able to work and able to contribute to society. It is estimated that 20-25% of children experience mental health literature taking into consideration the high prevalence of mental health literature in children, then schools are recommended as for health promotion. The purpose of this research is to know the description of the students ' mental health status and the promotion of mental health in two elementary schools, namely, SD Inpres Meti in Meti Village, East Tobelo Sub District and in SD Inpres, Kusuri village, West Tobelo District in North Halmahera regency. Collection of data using the distribution of the questionnaire by involving students in grades 4-6 and teachers. The questionnaire used was the questionnaires saebers. The results were summarized in 3 categories: disorders of social behavior, symptoms of academic behavior and symptoms of emotional behavior to assess students ' mental health status, while the promotion of mental health on teachers is summarized in six categories: knowledge of Student's mental healthcare promotion, teacher knowledge of student's mental health, school and teacher regulations, learning forms and teaching in the classroom, school relationships with parents and daily behavior of children in schools that often Found. Students of Meti (coastal) elementary school have a risk level of mental health problems of 100% and Studnt of Kusuri (mountain) of 87%, where there is no significant difference.Keywords: Health Promotion, Mental Health Status, Elementary Students

Abstract Background The current corona virus pandemic is acting as a stressor or trauma, which not only threats physical health status, but also threats mental health status and well-being of people. Currently, COVID-19 pandemic is a life-threatening unpredictable condition accompanied with a large number of uncertainties. The present study has mainly aimed to assess mental health and the relevant social factors during this pandemic in Fars province. Methods This cross-sectional study was performed on 922 participants in Fars province, Iran, using internet-based data collection technique. All the included participants filled out the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28). Moreover, demographic variables and some social factors were evaluated by asking some questions. All the participants were ensured of the confidentiality of the collected data, and willingly completed the questionnaire. Results Among the participants, there were 629 women (68.2%) and 293 men (31.2%). The mean age of the participants was 36.98 ± 11.08 years old. Four hundred twenty-five subjects (46.1%) obtained GHQ-28 scores above the cut-off point, and accordingly, they were suspected of having poor mental health statuses. Women, in comparison to men (OR = 2.034, 95%:1.62–3.28), and individuals aged < 50 years old, in comparison to those aged > 50 years old (OR: 4.01 95%:2.15–7.50), have poorer mental health statuses. Trusting on media, health authorities, and cooperation with policy makers, as well as having uncertainty on information about Coronavirus pandemic were also shown to be associated with poor mental health condition (P < 0.05). Conclusion The present study revealed that the number of those people with suspected poor mental health in Fars province significantly increased compared to a previous study using the same questionnaire. Furthermore, the participants who had less trust in media and policymakers were more prone to mental health problems. Therefore, it can be concluded that supporting people in these life-threatening pandemic crises is of great importance, so the policy makers and media must present reliable and valid information to people as soon as possible.
