 The aims of this classroom action research are (1) to find out whether role play can increase students’ participation in teaching-learning process and (2) to find out whether it can increase students’ ability in speaking. The data collected in this research were both qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were used to find out the students’ participation while the quantitative data were used to determine the students’ ability in speaking. The indicators of the success of this research were (1) that the students are 100% active during the teaching-learning process and (2) that at least 85% of the students get the minimum score of 70. In the first cycle, only 9 students (56%) who take participation, while the percentage of students who get the minimum score of 70 is 4 students (25%). In the second cycle, the percentage of students who take participation is 16 students (100%) and the percentage of students who get the minimum score of 70 is 8 students (50%). In the last cycle, the third cycle, it was gained that the percentage of students who take participation is 100% and the percentage of students who get the minimum score of 70 is 14 students (87.75%). In other words, the target of this research has been achieved at the end of the third cycle.

This study attempted to improve students’ achievement in vocabulary by using Realia. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VII-1 at SMP.N.17 Medan which consisted of 38 students. The research was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of three meetings and cycle II consisted of three meetings. The instrument for collecting quantitative data was a vocabulary test and the instruments for collecting qualitative data included diary notes, observation sheets, questionnaire sheets, and interview. Based on the vocabulary test, students’ score kept improving in every test and based on the diary notes, observation sheets, questionnaire sheets, and interview report, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic, and interested in vocabulary. The result of the research showed that Realia significantly improved students’ achievement in vocabulary. The background of this research is the low ability of the students in writing the role play text, in which they can not pass the minimum mastery criterion (KKM). The type of the research is Classroom Action Research which is employed in two (2) cycles. The act of the teaching and learning process is done by using CTL approach. Each cycle is done by integrating some CTL components and observed by the observers. The steps of the research are planning, doing, observation and reflection. The data are qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative data are collected from the observation and filed note while the quantitative data are collected from the result of students performance test. The research resuts shows that there is an increasing of student’s activity during teaching and learning processes after finishing the first and the second cycles. Furthermore, there is an increasing of students achievement result in writing the role play text from 68,38 in pre-cycle, which indicates that  40% of the students passed the KKM. Furthermore, the students achievement increases into 73,75 on the first cycle in which 64 % of students passed the KKM. Moreover, the second cycle shows that the average students’ grade is 88,25. This  grade means that 100% of the students pass the minimum mastery criteria (KKM). Keywords: writing, role play text, contextual teaching approach

This study deals with the way to improve students’ achievement in speaking particularly through Two Stay Two Stray Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of of the research was class X-AP SMK Swasta Harapan Danau Sijabut in Asahan Regency that consisted of 34 students. The research was conducted in two cycles consisted of three meetings in each cycle. The instruments of collecting data for quantitative data used Speaking Test and instrument for analysis of qualitative data used observation, interview and questionnaire sheet. Based on the speaking test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. In the test I the mean was 61,47, in the test II the mean was 67,41 and the test III the mean was 78,52. Based on observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that teaching learning process run well and lively. Students were active and interest in speaking. The using of Two Stay Two Stray Strategy is significantly improved students’ achievement in speaking.

This study attempts to increase students’ vocabulary achievement by using flash cards. The objective of the study is to investigate whether the using of flash card can improve students’ vocabulary achievement. This study conduct by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out in two cycles in six meetings. The subject of this study of SD Negeri 174559 Siraituruk, Porsea which consisted of 34 students. For collecting data, the instruments used were quantitative (vocabulary test) and qualitative data (interview sheet, observation sheet, and diary notes. Based on the data, it was found that the mean of the second cycle (80, 44) is higher than the mean of first cycle (64, 85) and pre-test (44, 41).  Based on interview sheet, observation sheet and diary notes, it was found thee students were more active and more enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in the second cycle than the first one. It was concluded that teaching vocabulary by using  flash cards can improve the students’ vocabulary achievement.

This study was focused on the improvement of Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition through the application of collaborative writing strategy. The objective of this study was to find out whether collaborative writing strategy could improve Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition text. The study was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subjects of this study were students of Grade XI Class 2 of State Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri: SMAN) 4 Pematangsiantar consisting of 32 students. The study was implemented in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of data collection consisted of quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were taken from students’ written test and the qualitative data were taken from the interview, diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire. Based on the analytical exposition writing result, students’ score was 57.9. In the test of Cycle I, the mean score was 67, and in the test of Cycle II was 78.3. Based on the observation sheet, it was found that the teaching-learning process well done. The students were active and curious in writing. In line with the data, it was found that collaborative writing strategy can improve Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition text. <em>The study aimed to apply the steps of inside outside circle (ioc) model and to improve student speaking skills and cooperation. The research was a collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) carried out in three cycles. The subjects were  third grade students of SD Negeri 1 Kutosari in academic year of 2019/2020. Qualitative data was the application of Inside Outside Circle (IOC) model. Quantitative data was the increasing student speaking skills and cooperation. The results showed that Inside Outside Circle (IOC) model improved student speaking skills and cooperation in five steps. It was proven by oral exam percentages which were 70.32% in the first cycle, 79.83% in the second cycle, and 89.01% in the third cycle. The  student cooperation percentages were 60.83% in the first cycle, 75.57% in the second cycle, and 84.25% in the third cycle. It concludes that there is significant improvement of student speaking skills by the application of Inside Outside Circle (IOC) model.</em>

This research concerned on Improving the Students’ Achievement in Writing Descriptive Texts through Prepare, Organize, Write, Edit, Rewrite (POWER) Strategy. In this research, the writer conducted classroom action research. Subject of this research were the second year students of SMK Negeri 1 Tanjung Pura Class XI AK consisted of 35 students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle was organized in four steps, namely Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. Cycle II was the improvement of Cycle I. There are two kinds of data collected during the research, qualitative and quantitative data. The instruments for the quantitative data was writing test while the qualitative data was gathered through Observation Sheet, Interview Sheet and Diary Notes. Findings showed that students’ score improved from Orientation Test to Test II. Based on the data analysis, Students’ mean in Orientation Test was 38.37, in Test I was 66.49, and Test II was 83.11. The conclusion is that the Prepare, Organize, Write, Edit, Rewrite (POWER) Strategy can improve the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

This study was aimed to improve student’s ability in writing short funcional text congratulation and complimenting using picture sequences at X MA Nurulhidayah Batujajar in the academic year of 2018/2019 as the subject of the study consists 32 students. This study was conducted for two months.The CAR was done based on Kurt Lewins’ design. The writer did two cycles which each cycle consists with planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. For data were gathered through qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were gained by analyzing the interview and observation result, while quantitative data were obtained from the students’ writing score of pretest and posttest.The finding of this study showed that there was improvement on the student’s ability in writing short funcional text congratulation and complimenting using picture sequences. It can be seen from the mean score of pretest was 56.75. Then, the mean score of posttest cycle 1 was 66.37 and the mean score of posttest cycle 2 was 72.62. so the criteria of success was achieved. from the result of questionnaire, it showed that there was improvement of positive responses in the teaching-learning process of writing short funcional textcongratulation and complimenting. Related to the result of observation and interview, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in writing short funcional texcongratulation and complimenting using picture sequences improved and the students’ were motivated in the teaching-learning process.

This research explained how listening comprehension by Short Story Gap Fill improved students’ listening comprehension achievement, observed students’ behavior during listening comprehension class and described the teacher’s Gap Fill technique along with the research. It used Classroom Action Research (CAR) with quantitatively data then analyzed into qualitative. The qualitative data were about students’ interview, while the quantitative data was their scores in pre-test and post-test on listening comprehension. Short Story Gap Fill contained listening comprehension exercises which tend to prove the missing words or phrases on a script of a story or a dialog; they were “pre, while and post-listening which focused on students’ ability to carry out the gap on the listening exercises. This research consisted of two cycles. The findings involved, the third-semester students of the English Department were fascinated by Short Story Gap Fill and immersed in listening comprehension well. However, during the first cycle, there were still 3 from 31 incompletely fulfill the gap in listening comprehension because they could not catch the vocabulary well and less focus. Ultimately, on the second cycle, the students' accomplishment in listening comprehension through this technique improved dramatically on their score of using the same technique. Keywords: CAR, Gap Fill, Listening Comprehension

This paper describes how allo-repetition strategy improves students’ participation in conversation class. Students’ low participation in conversation class is presumably caused by their having no strategy in speaking. This research is aimed at examining whether allo-repetition strategy can better improve students’ participation in English conversation. The kind of research is a Classroom Action Research conducted in two cycles at grade X2 which consisted of 31 students. The data were collected by using observation sheets, field notes, and tape recordings. The qualitative data were analyzed by using the technique suggested by Hopkins (1993: 159-162), and the quantitative data were analyzed by using percentage. The result of data analysis from observation sheets and field-notes show the improvement of students’ involvement in learning process. The data from students’ recorded conversation show the improvements in terms of numbers of exchanges the students could produce in a conversation, students’ turn-taking, and students’ back-channeling. The result of this research indicates that allo-repetition strategy better improves students’ participation in conversation class.
