Summary This study aimed to characterize propolis with respect to its antioxidant activity and apply it to the elaboration of Italian-type salami. A propolis sample was collected and subjected to chemical and physicochemical characterization and its antioxidant capacity determined. Four salami formulations were developed: F1 (no antioxidants); F2 (addition of 0.01% BHT); F3 (addition of 0.01% propolis) and F4 (addition of 0.05% propolis). The salamis were evaluated with respect to their physicochemical properties and lipid oxidation. The characterization of the propolis showed a high level of waxes and low levels of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, although in sufficient quantity to prove their antioxidant activity. The Italian-type salamis showed moisture, protein and lipid contents which conformed to the limits preconized by Brazilian legislation. The F4 formulation (0.05% propolis) showed a better result when compared to the formulations F3 (0.01% propolis) and F1 (no antioxidant). However, formulation F2 (0.01% BHT) showed the lowest value of lipid oxidation. The results showed that propolis inhibits oxidative action and can be added to meat products as a natural antioxidant.

The phytochemical characteristic analysis of a group of 30 haskap berry genotypes was carried out bearing in mind the concern for the consumption of food with high nutraceutical value that helps maintain good health. Phytochemical fruit composition and antioxidant activity were assessed by the Folin–Ciocalteau, spectrophotometric, DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) as well as ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) method. Evaluation of antioxidant activity was referred to as the Trolox equivalent. The observed differences in the content of phenolics, flavonoids, vitamin C and antioxidant activity allowed us to select genotypes which, due to the high level of the analyzed compounds, are particularly recommended in everyone’s diet. In addition, the analysis of the prospects of increasing the analyzed phytochemical properties, estimated by parameters such as heritability and genetic progress, indicates the effectiveness of breeding in relation to each of the analyzed traits. The results of the presented research can be used in the implementation of future breeding programs for this valuable species.

Oilseed pumpkin seeds are known to be rich in oil and nutrients. Their content in bioactive components gives them some assets that make them beneficial for human health. Although commonly consumed as a snack, pumpkin seeds are ready to claim more uses. The identification of pumpkin species is a major resource in this study. Thus, we worked with three pumpkin species: Cucurbita maxima (CMa), Cucurbita moschata (CMo) and Cucurbita pepo (CP). The species effect on the chemical composition, the content of bioactive compounds and the antioxidant activity was studied. As a result, the analysis of pumpkin seed oil revealed a polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) content ranging from 52.23% to 57.65%. Our study also revealed that this oil was a good source of phenolic compounds, in particular CMa with a value of 27.52 mg gallic acid equivalents per gram of methanolic extract and 633.51 mg/kg of total tocopherols, which gives it a very strong antioxidant character. In addition, it showed a high antioxidant potency (126.20 ± 20.44) μg/ml for CMa. In this respect, it can be said that the species effect can be a very important factor influencing the nutritional quality of pumpkin seed oil.

Pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) seeds are important food materials used by most Nigerian families due to their delicious taste, aroma and appeal. In this study, changes between chemical composition of processed and unprocessed pumpkin seeds (Cucurbita maxima) was investigated. The nutritional compositions were analyzed by standard methods. The vitamin A contents 36.83 μg/100g and 33.72 μg/100g respectively. The copper, zinc, magnesium, phosphorus and iron contents of processed seeds were; 0.063, 0.43, 47.67, 58.19 and 610.77 ppm respectively while the values for unprocessed were; 0.047, 0.41, 36.73, 58.45 and 211.19 ppm respectively with significant difference between the processed and unprocessed. The finding suggests that pumpkin seed is rich in this vitamin and minerals. If utilized efficiently. It can also ameliorate micronutrients deficiency problem in population of all age groups.

Abstract Seeds are the by-product in the cultivation of pumpkin. They are characterized by a high level of mineral substances and essential oils. However, the level of accumulation of biologically active components of seed kernel varies greatly among pumpkin varieties depending on climatic cultivation zones. Pumpkin varieties – Vitaminnayanaya, Michurinskaya sladkaya, Kubyshka, Muskatnayanaya, Aport – are taken as the objects of study. The chemical analysis of pumpkin seed kernels was carried out in accordance with generally accepted methodological recommendations. It was found that the sodium content in pumpkin seed kernel in the varietal section varies within the range of 5.07-17.6 mg/100 g, potassium – 554.8-767.1 ml/100g, calcium – 156.6-989.0 ml/100g, magnesium – 125.5-323.8 ml/100g, iron – 2.31-6.92 ml/100g, copper – 0.384-0.697 ml/100g, zinc – 4.80-7.43 ml/100g. The kernels of pumpkin seeds of the Michurinskaya sladkaya variety are characterized by high level of calcium – 989 ml/100g. Pumpkin seed kernels zoned in Tambov Region are rich in essential linoleic acid (52.59-63.87%), polyunsaturated oleic acid (11.70-27.35%), tocopherol (90-140 ml/100g). According to the content of linoleic acids, the highest indicators were found in seeds of Aport varieties – 63.87%, oleic acids – Muskatnayanaya (27.35%). The high content of tocopherol is typical for seeds of the Michurinskaya sladkaya variety – 140 ml/100 g. The obtained data on the chemical composition of pumpkin seed kernels indicate their promising use in the creation of functional food products and biologically active additives.

Antibiotics are among the most critical environmental pollutant drug groups. One of the methods used to remove this pollution is adsorption. In this study, activated carbon was produced from the pumpkin seed shell and then modified with KOH. This adsorbent obtained was used in the re-moval of ciprofloxacin from aqueous systems. Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), elemental, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Zeta analyzes were used for the characterization of the ad-sorbent. In particular, the surface area was found to be a very remarkable value of 2730 m2/g. The conditions of the adsorption experiments were optimized based on interaction time, adsorbent amount, pH and temperature. Over 99% success has been achieved in removal works carried out under the most optimized conditions. In addition, it was determined that the Langmuir isotherm is the most suitable model for the adsorption interaction.

ABSTRACT Fast bowlers are prone to stress lesions of the pars, especially the young players. The mixed type bowling action and excess bowling workloads are the risk factors associated with this injury. Other factors like adolescent age group, tight hamstrings, lordotic posture and lower limb mechanics have been implicated. Given the heavy cost of time away from play, efforts should be made to prevent these injuries at all levels of the game, across all age groups. Various cricketing boards have laid down guidelines to prevent excess bowling workloads during the match as well as during practice sessions. Coaching interventions are effective in changing the unsafe bowling actions without affecting the bowling speed or performance of the bowler. Spondylolysis may be asymptomatic or present with activity related back pain. A high level of suspicion is required for diagnosis. MRI now seems to be the first line of investigation due to the ability to detect stress reaction of the pars and adjoining pedicle as well as other causes of back pain. Localized CT scan may be required for further characterization of the lesion and to assess healing. Pars lesions have been classified on the basis of MRI picture. Initial stages show only stress reaction (early) followed by cortical breach (progressive) and later appearance of the defect (terminal). Conservative treatment includes rest from sporting activities followed by guided rehabilitation and risk factor analysis. In case of failure of conservative treatment, surgical repair of the pars gives satisfactory results and return to play. How to cite this article Kothari MK, Shah KC, Prabhoo T, Nene AM.
