Brassica alba, one of the very anciently well known plants, was used as biofertilizer long time before. Pot culture technique was introduced and three different pots were prepared. Plants of first pot provided only normal dose of urea, in second pot additionally 10% B. alba liquid manure sprayed along with the normal dose of urea. Third pot was provided with blue green algal fertilization and 10% of B. alba liquid manure. Various parameters like plant height, leaf length, leaf number and inflorescence length were evaluated in test culture receiving differentdose of urea and bio-fertilizer. In pot-1, plant height, length of inflorescence, grain yield , husk yield , grains per panicle , number of panicle per plant and weight of 1000 grains was found to be 84.30 cm, 19.50 cm, 2800 kgha-1, 4300 kgha-1, 42 grains per panicle, 4 panicle and 24.80 gm respectively, whereas in pot-2 plant height, length of inflorescence, grain yield, husk yield, grains per panicle, number of panicle per plant and weight of 1000 grains was found to be 98.50 cm, 21.40 cm, 3700 kgha-1 ,5600 kgha-1, 56 grains, 6 panicle and 29.30 gm respectively and in test pot-3, plant height, length of inflorescence, grain yield, husk yield, grains per panicle, number of panicle per plant and weight of 1000 grains was found to be 112.80 cm, 24.30 cm, 3850 kg ha-1, 5630 kgha-1, 60 grain per panicle, 6 panicle, and 30.60 gm respectively. The results clearly indicated that in comparison to urea, B. alba treated paddy plant performed higher plant height, higher yield production, higher husk production, larger number of grain per panicle and panicle length and higher grain weight.

Background: Maize is used both as green cobs and for grains and it is in increasing demand throughout Fiji. Maize productivity is low and could be attributed primarily to climate, low soil fertility and inappropriate agronomic practices.Methods: The experiment was laid out on maize variety Nirala in a randomized block design with three replications and six treatments comprising NPK, poultry manure and its combinations. Parameters on plant height (cm), number of leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width, stem girth, grain yield were recorded and collected data was analyzed statistically applying the analysis of variance technique. Result: Results reveled that among the all combinations, 100% NPK (300 kg/ha) along with PM @ 10 t ha-1 recorded higher plant height (204.00 cm), number of leaves per plant (12.87), maximum production efficiency (20.93 Kg/day/ha) and significantly superior (2511 kg/ha) grain yield and was most effective for improving growth and yield of maize.

Forty five hybrids derived from a diallel mating design of ten parents and one standard check PUSA CHARI-121 were evaluated for general and specific combining ability effects and standard heterosis for grain yield/plant, dry fodder yield/plant, days to 50 per cent flowering, plant height, number of leaves/plant, leaf length, leaf breadth and 100- seed weight of Sorghum bicolor. The mean square due to general and specific combining ability was significan for Days to 50% flowering, Days to maturity, Plant height (cm),No of Leaves/plant, Leaf length (cm), Leaf width (cm), seed yield/plant (g), Fodder yield/plant (q/ha) and 100-seed weight (g) for all the characters. Both additive and non additive genetic effects were present in the material under study. However the ratio of σ2gca/ σ2sca suggested that the preponderance of non additive gene action in expression of all the characters under study. Out of the nine parents PUSA CHARI-121, PANT CHARI-4, MP CHARI, PANT CHARI-6 and PANT CHARI-5 identified as good general combiner for grain yield/plant, dry fodder yield/plant and other agronomical traits. The hybrid HC-136 x PANT CHARI-4 and PANT CHARI-4 x PUSA CHARI-121 for grain yield/plant and hybrid MP CHARI x PANT CHARI-6, PANT CHARI-5 x SPV 1616 and HC-136 x PANT CHARI-4 for dry fodder yield/plant exhibited higher magnitude of positive significant specific combining ability effect with highest standard heterosis and per se performance. These hybrids were also found suitable for two or three yield contributing traits. In general, close association between specific combining ability effects and standard heterosis was observed among the best hybrids identified on the basis of specific combining ability effects for grain and dry fodder yield.

Analysis of genetic diversity and variability is an initial step for crop development in a plant breeding program. Thirty foxtail millet genotypes were evaluated for their ten agro-morphological traits viz. grain yield, days to heading, days to maturity, plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of nodes per tiller, panicle length, thousand-grain weight, and leaf blast during April to August season of 2018 at Kabre, Dolakha, Nepal. Clustering was done based on variability observed among the genotypes for all the ten traits by the average linkage method. The genotypes were grouped into six clusters. The shortest inter cluster distance between Cluster I and Cluster II was 17.63 and the longest was between Cluster IV and Cluster VI with 47.55. Cluster I had the maximum leaf blast score with the minimum leaf length. The Cluster II had the maximum grain yield and days to 50% heading and the number of nodes per tiller. The Cluster III was characterized by the maximum leaf length and leaf blast value. The genotypes grouped into the Cluster IV were characterized by the lowest value of days to 50% heading and 80% days to maturity and those of Cluster V had the maximum thousand-grain weight. The genotypes categorized into Cluster VI had the maximum plant height, leaf length, and panicle length. Cluster II and Cluster V were good because of their agro-morphological traits. The presence of a high level of diversity among the genotypes indicated their suitability for selection in crop breeding programs. Correlation analysis of genotypes having the maximum panicle length leaf area and higher plant height and shorter maturity period are pre-requisite for improvement in grain yield.

The experiment was carried out at Sunamganj district during November 2016 to May 2017 to observed the effect of urea fertilizer on the yield of boro rice varieties in haor areas of Bangladesh. Two factors experiment viz. Varieties BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan58; and six urea fertilizer levels including: 340 (F1), 320 (F2), 300 (F3), 280 (F4), 260 (F5), and 165 kg ha-1 (F6) [Farmer’s practice (FP)] were used. In case of F1-F5, the MoP-TSP-CaS04-ZnS04 as 127-112-75-11 kg ha-1 were used while Farmers’ practice (FP) was done with only 82 kg ha-1 TSP. The experiment was laid out in two factors randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three farmers’ replications. Data were collected on growth, yield and yield contributing characters of boro rice. Plant height varied at harvest stage in relation to variety and fertilizer. The tillers production hill-1 varied at harvest in case of variety and urea application. Higher plant height was found in BRRI dhan58 (93.9 cm) in comparison to BRRI dhan29 (90.3 cm). Plant height was also influenced due to urea fertilizers application. The higher tillers hill-1 (15.9), effective tillers hill-1 (12.3) and longer panicle length (21.1 cm) were produced by BRRI dhan58 at harvest compared to BRRI dhan29. The longest panicle (21.4 cm) was produced in the treatment F3 (300 kg urea ha-1). Higher number of sterile spikelets panicle-1 (58.5) and 1000-grain weight (23.2 g) was produced by BRRI dhan58. Higher number of grains panicle-1 (137.5) was produced by BRRI dhan29. The highest grain yield (6.7 t ha-1) and straw yield (7.91 t ha-1) were obtained in the treatment F3 (300 kg urea ha-1). The experimental soil analyses showed that the nutrient contents in post-harvest soils were higher compared to initial soil due to balanced fertilizer application. It is concluded that 300 kg urea ha-1 promoted highest grain yield.

Drought is a major constraint for rainfed lowland and upland rice productivity throughout world. A backcross inbred population derived from ‘Swarna’ and ‘WAB450-I-B-P-157-2-1’ (Oryza sativa L. x O. glaberrima) was evaluated under both irrigated and lowland drought stresses for yield and yield related traits across three different seasons. Significant differences were found among all the analyzed traits. Coefficients of variation were recorded relatively high for filled grains per panicle, spikelet fertility, test weight, harvest index and grain yield and low for panicle length under both conditions during the study interval. Broad sense heritability varied from 0.28 (panicle number) to 0.83 (plant height) under stress and 0.31 (test weight) to 0.86 (plant height) under control. However, heritability estimates for grain yield and harvest index were found to be similar under both conditions. Traits such as filled grains per panicle, spikelet fertility, harvest index and grain yield recorded higher values of both heritability, as well as genetic advance under both conditions, indicating the suitability of these traits as selection criteria to derive high yielding genotypes for drought prone regions. Harvest index exhibited maximum positive direct effect on grain yield under both the conditions; in addition, filled grains per panicle, spikelet fertility and biomass had positive direct effect on grain yield under both irrigated and lowland drought stresses state. Hence, for improving the rice yield under lowland drought ecology, a genotype should posses a large number of panicles per plant, filled grains per panicle, high spikelet fertility and maintains higher biomass and harvest index.

An experiment was conducted during December, 2017 to May, 2018 at the Agronomy field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka to evaluate the performance of white maize variety under different spacing and integrated fertilizer management. The experiment comprised two different factors; (1) two plant spacing viz. S1 (60 cm × 20 cm) and S2 (40 cm × 20 cm) and (2) four levels of integrated fertilizer application viz. T1: All chemical fertilizer (recommended dose), T2: maize straw compost +½ of recommended dose,T3: cowdung+½ of recommended dose and T4: vermicompost +½ of recommended dose. The experiment was set up in split plot design with three replications. Results revealed that both the individual and the interaction treatments had effect on different growth and yield parameters of white maize. In respect of the spacing effect, the wider spacing S1 showed higher plant height, number of leaves plant-1, cob length, cob circumference, number of grains cob-1, shelling percentage, 100 grains weight and harvest index where S2 showed higher grain yield. The integrated fertilizer had significant effect on different growth and yield parameters of white maize. In respect of the integrated fertilizer effect, the highest values in plant height, number of leaves plant-1, leaf area index and crop growth rate, cob length, cob circumference, number of grains cob-1, shelling percentage, 100 grains weight, grain yield, stover yield and biological yield were highest with T3 whereas, the lowest corresponding values were recorded from T2. Among the interaction treatments, higher seed yield was obtained with the interaction treatment S2T3 (10.01 t ha-1) while S1T2 showed significantly the lowest seed yield (5.27 t ha-1). The highest seed yield was mostly attributed to the number of grains per cob (328-433) and 100 seed weights (29.67-33.33 g).

Genetically modified plants have high potential for use and benefits; they are dynamic and tend to enable more sustainable agricultural management alternatives as scientific and technical information are applied. However, little is known about the effects of genetic modifications to induce resistance to herbicides and insect attacks on agronomic characteristics of maize plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of transgenic events on morphological and productive characteristics of maize hybrids. A field experiment was conducted in two crop seasons, using conventional and transgenic isogenic hybrids. The variables analyzed were plant height, ear height, stem diameter, and grain yield. The genetic modifications used in the evaluated transgenic hybrids affected the morphological and productive characteristics of the maize plants. The transgenic hybrids presented 5% higher plant height and 10% higher grain yield than the conventional hybrids.

JLSO 8(1):39-46.The assessment was carried out in Jambu Ilir Village, Tanjung Lubuk District, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra, starting in the dry season of 2018. Varieties exhibited were 2 superior varieties  and 1 comparative variety, Mekongga. The aim of the study was to obtain information on the growth and production of Inpari 30 and Inpara 8 varieties that were adaptive and had high production on lebak lands. The study was designed by observation method, spacing of legowo 2: 1 (50x25x12.5 cm), seedling age 35 days after seedling, 2-3 seeds / holes. The dosage of fertilizer used is 150 kg Urea, 100 kg SP-36 and 100 kg KCl / ha. The variables observed were: plant height, number of productive tillers, number of grain per panicle, number of filled grains per panicle, and grain yield per ha. The data obtained was arranged in tabulation and analyzed by statistical tests, namely the test of the mean value (test-t). The results showed that the plant height of the varieties exhibited was classified as low to moderate with the number of productive tillers classified as moderate. Inpari 30, and Inpara 8 can adapt well in lebak lands with a production of 5.1-5.3 tons GKP / ha higher than Mekongga as a comparison variety and are highly favored by farmers.

Green gram (Vigna radiate l.) is an important legume grown within Kenyan Coast. Despite the crops importance as a locally available nutrient supplement, its production is constrained by declining soil fertility caused by poor agronomic practices. A field experiment was established during the March-June, 2019 long rains in multi locational sites at Matuga and Mivumoni in Kwale County. The experiment was aimed at investigating the effect of integrating farm yard manure, zinc and starter nitrogen and phosphorus on soil fertility, growth and yield of green grams. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Treatments included: Zinc, NP, Manure, Manure+ zinc, NP+ zinc and control. Green gram variety tested was KS20. Data collected included: Initial soil chemical properties, plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of pods per plant, grains per pod, weight of 100 grains, biomass and grain yield. Results showed that Zinc+ manure significantly promoted the highest plant height, number of leaves, grain yield. Plots treated with zinc+ manure recorded 32% higher plant height and 46% higher grain yield compared to NP applied plots. In conclusion, integration of manure and zinc was most effective in promoting green grams growth and yield. Since, this research was carried out on station in ferralic, chromic Luvisols; there is need for long term trials in farmers’ fields with diverse soil properties and environmental conditions.

A field experiment was conducted as on-farm research at Duradanda Lamjung during rainy season 2016 (June to October) to find out the promising genotype to grow in the mid hill of Nepal. The experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications (farmers as a replication) of 6 genotypes (NR10769-4-2-2, 08FAN10, Khumal 4, NR11105-B-B-27, NR11052-B-B-B-B-66, NR11011-B-B-B-B-29) with a check (Ghaiya). The sterility percent ranged from (15.87-26.35), highest being of 08FAN 10 and lowest of NR 10769. Test weight ranged from (26.03-27.45), highest of Ghaiya and lowest of NR10769. The results revealed that the maximum effective tiller (266 tillers/m2), number of filled grain per panicle (115 grains) and panicle length (27.17 cm) were observed in Ghaiya while minimum effective tiller (202 tillers/m2) and filled grain (77 grains) were found in NR11052-B-B-B-B-66. The result shows that local variety Ghaiya had the highest yield (4.34 ton ha-1) which was highly significant followed by the genotype NR11105-B-B-27 (3.42 ton ha-1) and the genotype NR11052-B-B-B-B-66 had the lowest yield (2.50 ton ha-1). Therefore, ghaiya rice was better in Duradanda as compared to other genotypes and need to be encouraged among farmers. Correlation studied shows that harvest index, thousand grain weight, flag leaf width showed positive and significant association with grain yield, while Flag leaf length, flag leaf area, effective grain per panicle, number of effective tillers per m2, no. of tiller per hill showed positive non significant association to grain yield. So, the improvement in grain yield would be effective and economical, if the selection is based on these component traits.
