Abstract. Background: Stress is response and acknowledged as a natural respond to problems in daily life. Coping is defined as a process used to confront stress with various degree of effectiveness. Purpose: To correlate cause of stress and coping mechanism based on sex and year of admission among Universitas Airlangga medical students year 2013, 2014, and 2015. Method: This study was observational analytic study. Data were taken by self-administrated questionnaires (demographic, Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire, and BriefCOPE)  Result: Respondents were dominated by female (60%) and  out of 90 answers, the most frequent stressor was Academic Relater stressor (45.12%) regardless of the gender and admission year, and the most frequent coping mechanism is Planning (79.50%)  and Religion for female students (80.75%) and 2013 students (78.75%). There was a significant correlation between stressor Intrapersonal and Interpersonal and Teaching and Learning Related also coping mechanism Planning, Humor, and Religion between male and female participants. There was also significant correlation between different admission year for coping mechanism Denial, Humor, and Self Blame. Conclusion: The most common stressor of the student year 2013, 2014, and 2015 with medical major in Universitas Airlangga is Academic Related and the most common coping mechanism is Planning.Keywords: medical student, academic stressor, coping mechanism, observational analytic study

Background: In the current competitive world, every student’s life is very stressful due to various factors like studies, exams, batch mates, lecturers or pressure by parents. Stress is sometimes called as the wear and tear experienced by everyone’s body because we need to adjust to the ever changing environment. Objective: Aim was to assess the perceived stress and coping profile among undergraduate medical students in Bagalkot. A total of 100 undergraduate students from S. N. Medical College, Bagalkot were included based on systematic random sampling test methods. Each enrolled student was given two self-rating questionnaires-Perceived Stress Scale and Brief Cope Inventory. Chi-square test and Fisher’s exact were used for analysis. Result: Majority of study participants had belonged to very high health concern level followed by high health concern level. Most of the participants used self-distraction and active coping strategy. Perceived stress was not associated with sex, religion, place of domicile or type of the family. Conclusion: The effect of stress depends on the way it is perceived. The coping strategies are usually influenced by socioeconomic and cultural characteristics. So they vary from individuals to individuals. Students who are stressed must receive counseling on how to manage and cope up with the stress. We need to enforce early interventions strategies to improve the quality of life of each student by reducing the stress.

Objective: To determine the association of perceived stress and coping strategies with depressive symptoms in students at a private medical college in Islamabad. Study Design: Correlational study. Place and Duration of Study: Foundation University Medical College, Islamabad, from Jun to Dec 2019. Methodology: Fourth and Final year medical students of Foundation university medical college were enrolled in the study. Beck’s Depression Inventory was used to assess the depressive symptoms, perceived stress scale (PSS) was the tool used to look for the perceived stress and the coping strategies were assessed using the Brief Coping Orientation to Problems experienced (Brief COPE) Inventory. The association of perceived stress and coping strategies with depressive symptoms and other sociodemographic factors was established with the help of the chi-square test. Results: Out of 262 medical students included in the study, 211 (80.5%) had none or mild depressive symptoms while 51 (19.5%) had moderate to severe depressive symptoms. Sixty-six (25.2%) had low stress, 127 (48.4%) had moderate stress while 69 (26.3%) reported high stress levels. Pearson chi-square test revealed that perceived stress and the coping strategies used including self-distraction, active coping, denial, substance use, behavioural disengagement, positive reframing, acceptance, religion/spirituality and self-blaming had a statistically significant relationship with the presence of depressive symptoms among the target population. Conclusion: Considerable number of medical students had the presence of moderate to severe depressive symptoms in our study. Perceived stress and some specific kinds of coping strategies had a significant association with the presence of depressive symptoms among the target.......

Background: Every person experiences different forms of stress throughout their life. Therefore a student nurse is no exception as they have to adjust to an entirely new environment on joining nursing. Stress in nursing students is an area of growing concern. The stress among the students can have serious effects on their health and studies. It may affect in psychological distress, physical complains, behavior problems and poor academic performance.Objective : The main objective of this study was to assess the level of stress and coping mechanisms among nursing students.Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was done among 283 nursing students of Manmohan Memorial Institiute of Health Sciences (MMIHS), by using purposive sampling technique. The level of stress was assessed using Perceived stress scale-14 (PSS-14) and coping mechanism was assessed using Brief cope inventory. The data analysis was done using SPSS version 20.  Descriptive and inferential statistics was used and Chi-square test was applied for association.Result: The results were found that 61.5% of the respondents have moderate stress and 27.9% of the respondents have severe stress and mild stress only by 10.6%.Likewise 44.5% of the respondents were very often stressed due to test, examination and evaluations where as half of the majority of respondents were some time deal with dying or seriously ill patient.  Similarly 58.3% used Emotion-focused strategies for coping mechanism and 3.9% of the respondents used Problem-focused strategies for coping mechanism.Conclusion: Majority of the nursing students were found to have moderate stress. Perceived stress scale was found to be statistically significant with age, educational status of the respondents, education of father and mother. Background. Medical education is rated as one of the most difficult trainings to endure. Throughout their undergraduate years, medical students face numerous stressors. Coping with these stressors requires access to a variety of resources, varying from personal strengths to social support. We aimed to explore the perceived stress, stressors, and coping strategies employed by medical students studying in a problem-based learning curriculum. Methodology. This is a cross-sectional study of randomly selected medical students that explored demographics, perceived stress scale, sources of stress, and coping strategies. Results. Of the 378 medical students that participated in the study, males were 59.3% and females 40.7%. Nearly 53% of the students often felt stressed, and a third felt that they could not cope with stress. Over 82% found studying stressful and 64.3% were not sleeping well. Half of the students reported low self-esteem. Perceived stress scores were statistically significantly high for specific stressors of studying in general, worrying about future, interpersonal conflict, and having low self-esteem. Coping strategies that were statistically significantly applied more often were blaming oneself and being self-critical, seeking advice and help from others, and finding comfort in religion. Female students were more stressed than males but they employ more coping strategies as well. Conclusions. Stress is very common among medical students. Most of the stressors are from coursework and interpersonal relationships. Low self-esteem coupled with self-blame and self-criticism is quite common.

A descriptive study was carried out for the purpose to investigate the level of stress and coping and to determine the relationship between stress and various coping mechanism among infertile women in selected two infertility clinic to find out the variables and their significance that may be related to study including (age, educational level, occupation, duration of infertility, …ect). The study sample consisted of 200 infertile women who were diagnosed as infertile and who were visiting infertility clinic during the data collection and met the inclusion criteria for the study. Self-developed likert scale for assessing the level of stress and coping in infertile women In this study, we used inferential and Descriptive Statistics, mean, standard deviation and mean percentage ,Correlation Coefficient Pearson, anova and unpaired t test were used in the study, the results showed that there is a moderately positive relationship between infertility related stress and coping mechanism, 47.21% was the total stress in total population, 40% have mild stress, 49.50% have moderate stress and 10.5% have severe stress. 53% have moderate coping 24% have inadequate coping 23% have adequate coping. The findings of the current study found that there is statistical significances at p>0.05. The study found significant association in age and year of infertility with stress calculated value was greater than tabulated value at p>0.05 type of family,income,substance use and exposure to stress reduction therapy have no association because the calculated value is less than tabulated value at p>0.05 and no significance in occupation, education and income per month. type of family, substance use, exposure to stress reduction technique, income with coping at p>0.05. Psychological aspect of infertility should be given more attention, and be considered in all stages of treatment and medical interventions to decrease the psychological suffering of the infertile women and to prevent developing of the psychological disorder.

Abstract Objectives The extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic is appraised as a stressor influences perceived stress (PS) and psychological well-being during the event. Here, the association of older adults’ expectations concerning the pandemic’s duration and impact with PS and negative affect (NA) is investigated. Based on the stress and coping framework, PS is expected to mediate the association between COVID-19 expectations and NA. Methods Seven hundred fourteen residents of the United States and aged 60 and older completed an anonymous online survey in late March 2020 reporting PS, NA, and expectations regarding the pandemic. Results Regression analyses controlling for demographic factors revealed that more dire pandemic expectations significantly predicted PS and NA directly, and the effects on NA were significantly mediated by PS. Discussion Findings provide evidence that expectations about a pandemic influence the extent to which older adults experience stress and NA in the midst of a pandemic event. Implications for mental health are discussed.
