Relationship of cytokine levels with neuropsychological parameters in patients with vibration disease

Introduction. The results were obtained using the method of solid-phase enzyme immunoassay and neuropsychological examination of patients with vibration disease caused by the combined effect of local and general vibration. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between the content of pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines and changes in neuropsychological parameters in patients with vibration disease associated with combined exposure to local and general vibration. Materials and methods. Examined men were divided into groups: first group (n=28) - with vibration disease of the second degree, due to the combined effect of local and general vibration and the second (n=16) - the comparison group. There are methods of statistical analysis with the determination of the Shapiro-Wilk W-test, the Mann-Whitney U-test, and the Spearman correlation analysis. Results. In patients with vibration disease when compared to second group was higher values characterizing the analytic-synthetic (p=0.002) and conceptual thinking (p=0.016), short (verbal) (p=0.002), hand-shaped (p=0.002) and long (p=0.041) memory, dynamic (p=0.001) and constructive (p=0.001) praxis, visual gnosis (p=0,042), impressive speech (p=0.041), as well as index test, MMSE (p=0.003). Dysregulation in the immune system manifests in the form of a statistically significant hyperproduction of IL-8 and IFN-γ diagnosed in first group patients when compared with group II at p<0.05. There were statistically significant direct correlations between the concentration of IL-4 and the indicator of conceptual thinking, an indicator that characterizes finger gnosis (p=0.021; 0.025, respectively). Statistically significant dependences indicate that the increase in tests on the arithmetic triple score, the selection of opposites in the active plan, showing the specified finger on the sample and the name, an explanation of the logical-grammatical constructions, indicating a decrease in the function of analytical and synthetic thinking, conceptual thinking, finger gnosis, impressive speech, this is due to an increase in production of IL-8, IFN-γ (p=0,013; 0,044; 0,025; 0,008; 0,048; 0,046; 0,028; 0,018 respectively). Conclusions. The decrease in indicators that characterize analytical-synthetic, conceptual thinking, short-term (auditory-speech), long-term, operational visual memory, dynamic and constructive praxis, visual gnosis, and impressive speech is accompanied by hyperproduction of IL-8, IFN-γ. This fact may characterize the activation of the neuroinflammatory process as an important determinant of cognitive decline under the combined influence of local and general vibration. The established relationship between increased levels of IL-4 and indicators of conceptual thinking, visual gnosis, probably indicates the importance of more pronounced cytotoxic reactions in the violation of the mechanisms of visual perception and thought process in patients with vibration disease.

Using the classical Ugi four-component reaction to fuse an amine, ketone, carboxylic acid, and isocyanide, here we prepared a short library of N-alkylated α,α-dialkylglycine derivatives. Due to the polyfunctionality of the dipeptidic scaffold, this highly steric hindered system shows an interesting acidolytic cleavage of the C-terminal amide. In this regard, we studied the structure-acid lability relationship of the C-terminal amide bond (cyclohexylamide) of N-alkylated α,α-dialkylglycine amides 1a–n in acidic media and, afterward, it was established that the most important structural features related to its cleavage. Then, it was demonstrated that electron-donating effects in the aromatic amines, flexible acyl chains (Gly) at the N-terminal and the introduction of cyclic compounds into dipeptide scaffolds, increased the rate of acidolysis. All these effects are related to the ease with which the oxazolonium ion intermediate forms and they promote the proximity of the central carbonyl group to the C-terminal amide, resulting in C-terminal amide cleavage. Consequently, these findings could be applied for the design of new protecting groups, handles for solid-phase synthesis, and linkers for conjugation, due to its easily modulable and the fact that it allows to fine tune its acid-lability.

The extraction and determination of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids as well as their influence on the aromaticity and molecularity relationship of natural organic matter (NOM) in water are reported in this study. Three solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbents were used and their extraction efficiencies evaluated after chromatographic determinations (using gas chromatography with a time of flight mass spectrometer (GC × GC-TOFMS) and liquid chromatography with organic carbon detector (LC-OCD)). More than 42 carboxylic acids were identified in raw water from the Vaal River, which feeds the Lethabo Power Generation Station, South Africa, with cooling water. The aromatic carboxylic acid efficiency (28%) was achieved by using Strata™X SPE while the highest aliphatic carboxylic acid efficiency (92.08%) was achieved by silica SPE. The hydrophobic nature of NOM in water depends on the nature of organic compounds in water, whether aromatic or aliphatic. The LC-OCD was used to assess the hydrophobicity levels of NOM as a function of these carboxylic acids in cooling water. The LC-OCD results showed that the aromatic nature of NOM in SPE filtered water followed the order Silica>Strata X>C-18. From the results, the hydrophobicity degree of the samples depended on the type and number of carboxylic acids that were removed by the SPE cartridges.

A high-throughput method was employed to effectively obtain the cross-scale relationship of elastic copper alloys. Firstly, a Cu–Ni–Ti–Cu25Al–Cu35Sn diffusion multiple was prepared and heat-treated under a specified condition to form a series of diffusion layers with the concentration gradient at the multielement metal interface. Then, the compositions, elastic moduli, and hardness of the Cu–Ni–Al and Cu–Ti–Al ternary copper alloys were tested. Meanwhile, the solid phase sequences in the diffusion zones were predicted by the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagram) method. Through these experimental and calculated results, the composition–phase–property relations of the Cu–Ni–Al and Cu–Ti–Al ternary systems were established.

Abstract Chemokine receptors (CR), which can mediate migration of immune cells to the site of inflammation, also function as coreceptors for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) entry into CD4+ T lymphocytes and antigen-presenting cells. We demonstrate here that interferon-γ (IFN-γ) increases the expression of chemokine receptors CCR1, CCR3, and CCR5 in monocytoid U937 cells as detected by cell surface molecule labeling and mRNA expression, as well as by intracellular calcium mobilization and cell migration in response to specific ligands. The increased expression of these chemokine receptors also results in an enhanced HIV-1 entry into cells. Our data provide evidence for a relationship of cellular pathways that are induced by IFN-γ with those that regulate chemokine receptor expression.

ABSTRACT Intracellular granules containing ferric and ferrous iron formed in Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 during dissimilatory reduction of solid-phase ferric iron. It is the first in situ detection at high resolution (150 nm) of a mixed-valence metal particle residing within a prokaryotic cell. The relationship of the internal particles to Fe(III) reduction may indicate a respiratory role.

Introduction. Vibration as a factor of production is one of the leading that influences negatively on workers in various sectors of the economy. In available literature there no adequate information on the comorbid pathology in hand-arm vibration disease (HAVD) patients. The purpose of the study is to analyze the prevalence of somatic pathology in HAVD patients. Material and methods. The analysis of comorbidity of HAVD patients according in-depth medical data is carried out. The degree of relationship between work-related health disorders is assessed. The results are presented by average values, intensive and extensive indices, the relationship of work-related health disorders is confirmed by the calculation of the relative risk. Results. The main syndrome in the clinical picture of HAVD is autonomous-sensory polyneuropathy of the upper extremities, which is recorded in all patients, while some patients have a combination of two or more clinical syndromes of HAVD. A significant prevalence of diseases of the musculoskeletal and circulatory systems, eyes and its adnexa, ear and mastoid process, digestive, genitourinary system, and respiratory systems was revealed. Number of patients who have diseases of endocrine (up to 25.0%, p <0.01), digestive (up to 43.8%, p <0.01), urogenital (up to 37.5%, p <0.01), respiratory (up to 37.5%, p <0.05) and the circulatory (up to 52.9%, p <0.05) systems grows up with an increase of the experience dose of local vibration. Conclusion. The results of the study can serve as the basis for the implementation of measures for primary and secondary prevention of occupational diseases caused by local vibration, aimed at preventing the development of health disorders.

Previous studies have demonstrated that individuals process information related to themselves or a high reward quickly and have referred to this as self-bias or reward-bias. However, no previous study has presented self- and reward-bias simultaneously. The present study investigated perceptual processing using the associated learning paradigm when both self and reward were prioritized (condition of double salience) as well as when only self or reward was prioritized (condition of single salience). The present study established these two conditions by manipulating self-relevance (self vs. stranger in Experiment 1; self vs. friend in Experiment 2). The results showed that (1) when the self was pitted against a stranger and received a high or low reward, perceptual processing of the participants mainly involved self-bias (Experiment 1); (2) when the self was pitted against a friend, perceptual processing involved both self-bias and reward-bias (Experiment 2). The study revealed a complex relationship between self- and reward-bias, which depends on the degree of affinity between oneself and others.

Background: Toxocariasis is a cosmopolitan infection that occurs in various regions worldwide, more frequently in developing countries. Chronic infections with Toxocara species in humans are associated with the production of high levels of specific and non-specific antibodies of all isotypes and IgG subclasses and a cytokine response characterized by the production of Th2 cytokines including IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 by Peripheral Blood Monocytes (PBMCs) and Leukocytes (PBLs) in whole blood cultures. Other Th2 effector responses are also prominent during infection, reflected by elevated numbers of peripheral blood eosinophils and increased expression of eosinophil degranulation products. The production of IFN-γ by PBMCs/PBLs stimulated with Toxocara-secreted proteins is not prominent in toxocariasis but IL-10 production may be increased in infected individuals. The relationship between Toxocara species with allergic reactions was reported in the recent century. Experimental and epidemiological investigations revealed that toxocariasis with this parasite led to the development of allergic symptoms, such as asthma. However, the findings are conflicting since in other investigations no association between these two immunopathologies has been reported. Conclusion: The present review endeavours to summarize the data on Toxocara species and findings from studies on the relationship of toxocariasis with symptoms and signs of allergy. Furthermore, the mechanisms of immune responses and the factors associated between allergy and Toxocara infection are discussed.
