The history of vegetation mapping of Siberia in the second half of XX century has been presented from compiling of the first regional vegetation maps to creating of survey small-scale maps of large regions. The most significant cartographic works such as Vegetation map of Novosibirsk region (S 1 : 500 000) and Ecological-phytocoenotical map of the South of Siberia (S 1 : 1 000 000) have been characterized. Present state of cartographic study of the territory is reflected at schematic sketch. The tasks and methodological problems of vegetation mapping in the region have been formulated.

The article gives the brief outline of the history of vegetation mapping in China. Three periods in the development of Chinese vegetation cartography are distinguished. 1. The primary period (before 1957) is characterized by schematic, mostly regionalization, small-scale maps based on a physiognomic approach with few divisions of the legend. An example is the Vegetation Map of China at 1 : 18 000 000, published in 1957 which showed basic reguliarities of the geographic distribution of vegetation in China, its legend having included 13 numbers. 2. The period of maturation (from 1958 up to 1979). The extensive field investigations and rapid development of theory and methodology promoted the creation of some important cartographic works. The most significant of them are: Vegetation Map of China at 1 : 10 000 000 (Hou Hsiohyu et al., 1965), Vegetation Regionalization Map of China (Hou Hsiohyu, 1965), Vegetation Map of People s Republic of China at 1 : 4 000 000 (Hou Hsiohyu at al., 1980). These maps are notable for a great deal of various data involved, the hierarchic complex legends of almost two hundred divisions, the application of some new scientific approaches: showing the latitudinal, longitudinal and altitudinal differentiation, the edaphic variation of and the dynamic phenomena in vegetation. In this period some regional maps were published as well: vegetation maps of North-East China at 1 : 500 000 and of Zun Ge Er at 1 : 2 000 000. 3. The period of rapid and intensive development (after 1980). Owing to remote sensing technique numerous small-scale maps were prepared and published. The basic one is the Vegetation Map of China at 1 : 1 000 000. For its preparing a great deal of field materials, satellite images and literature data were involved. About 300 researches took part in this work.

In the introduction the history of botanical exploration of the Himalayas is considered starting from the late XVIIIth century up to present time. The next part of the article is devoted to the history of vegetation mapping proper. Vegetation maps relating to the Himalayas as a whole and to its different parts are enumerated including the vegetation map of Nepal in 8 sheets at scale 1 : 2 500 000 by the author (1971 to 1985) and his two large-scale maps (1 : 50 000) covering small areas in Eastern and Central Nepal (1974 and 1977). The above vegetation maps have been constructed using the basic concepts of vegetation level and vegetation series by Gaussen and Ozenda along with the biogeographic concept taking into account the diversity of flora and vegetation. The concept of vegetation level reflects the altitudinal zonation of vegetation, 11 vegetation levels being distinguished in Central Himalayas. The other basic concept is that of vegetation series depicting the dynamics of vegetation cover with respect to human activity. One series includes all the vegetation types which terminate, by natural evolution, in one climax vegetation type (potential vegetation). For Nepal about 100 vegetation series have been described and mapped.

In 1965, Frederick (Fritz) Maytag III began a decades-long revitalization of Anchor Brewing Company in San Francisco, California. This was an unexpected venture from an unlikely brewer; for generations, Maytag's family had run the Maytag Washing Machine Company in Iowa and he had no training in brewing. Yet Maytag's career at Anchor initiated a phenomenal wave of growth in the American brewing industry that came to be known as the microbrewing—now “craft beer”—revolution. To understand Maytag's path, this article draws on original oral histories and artifacts that Maytag donated to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History via the American Brewing History Initiative, a project to document the history of brewing in the United States. The objects and reflections that Maytag shared with the museum revealed a surprising link between the birth of microbrewing and the strategies and culture of mass manufacturing. Even if the hallmarks of microbrewing—a small-scale, artisan approach to making beer—began as a backlash against the mass-produced system of large breweries, they relied on Maytag's early, intimate connections to the assembly-line world of the Maytag Company and the alchemy of intellectual curiosity, socioeconomic privilege, and risk tolerance with which his history equipped him.

The prevention of Diabetic Mellitus (DM) and its complications is the main aim of this study, in addition to the training of lotion foot care application and the development of small scale industry. The research team delivered knowledge in the form of training on Diabetic Mellitus, healthy food, treatment and prevention of complications, and small-scale production of cosmetic products. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between training on diabetic and lotion foot care application as preventive measures against diabetic complications on the patient's blood glucose levels in the community of residents in Banyuurip Jaya, Surabaya. It was expected from this training that the knowledge of the residents increases and people living with diabetic undergo lifestyle changes and therefore blood sugar levels can be controlled. The parameters measured in this research were blood glucose levels, the anti diabetic drug types consumed, and compliance on diabetics. This study used the data taken from 60 patients with DM over a period of one month. Questionnaires and log books was used to retrieve data and changes in blood glucose levels in diabetic patients. The results showed the demographic data of patients with type 2 diabetic of 85% female and 15% male, with the range of patients aged of 61-70 years of 46.67% and had history of diabetic (90%). The history of drugs consumed by respondents was anti diabetic drugs such as metformin (40%), glimepiride (33.37%) and insulin (6.67%). In addition, the increased knowledge of DM patients after being given the training compared to before training was shown in several questions in the questionnaire. A statistical analysis using t-test analyzed a correlation between training provided in order to enhance understanding of the patient, as well as correlation with blood glucose levels. A paired T-test showed that there was a relationship between the knowledge of trainees before and after training (p less than 0.05). An interesting result was that there was no relationship between blood glucose levels before and after training provided (p> 0.05).

A monograph “Vegetation and biotopes of the “Narochansky” National Park was published in Minsk, Belarus in 2017, edited by A. V. Pugachevsky (Grummo et al., 2017). It includes the Map of terrestrial vegetation (S. 1 : 60 000) and the Map of biotopes (S. 1 : 60 000). Some small-scale maps such as the Map of changes in forest cover of the “Narochansky” National Park for the period 1985–2016, the Map of forest loss in the “Narochansky” National Park for the period 1985–2016 and a series of inventory and analytical maps on the basin of the Naroch Lake are given. This monograph can be considered as a small regional Atlas with detailed explanatory texts to the maps. It presents the experience on vegetation mapping accumulated in the Laboratory of Geobotany and Vegetation mapping of the Institute of Experimental Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Despite some critical comments, mainly concerning the biotope map, this publication of Belarusian geobotanists deserves an approval. They received the full answers to the questions posed: “What do we protect?” and “What is a current state of the vegetation of the National Park and the main trends of its dynamics? Cartographic design is made at a high level; the maps have both scientific and practical importance in the planning of environmental and economic activities.

The recognition of versatile importance of vegetation for the human life resulted in the emergence of vegetation science and many its applications in the modern world. Hence a vegetation map should be versatile enough to provide the basis for these applications. Thus, a vegetation map should contain not only information on vegetation types and their derivatives but also the geospheric and climatic background. While the geospheric information could be obtained, mapped and generalized directly using satellite remote sensing, a computerized Geographic Information System can integrate it with meaningful vegetation information classes for large areas. Such aft approach was developed with respect to mapping forest vegetation in India at. 1 : 100 000 (1983) and is in progress now (forest cover mapping at 1 : 250 000). Several review works reporting the experimental and operational use of satellite remote sensing data in India were published in the last years (Unni, 1991, 1992, 1994).

Although the ratio of sewer systems to population in Japan has been improving in recent years, the construction of sewer systems in small communities such as farming or fishing villages, etc. had lagged behind that of urban areas. However, construction of small-scale sewer systems in farming and fishing villages has been actively carried out in recent years. This report explains the history of the promotion of small-scale sewer systems, why submerged filter beds are being employed in many cases, and introduces the design, operation and maintenance of representative waste-water treatment plants in farming and fishing villages which incorporate de-nitrogen and dephosphorization.

Diving as a method of fishing is used worldwide in small-scale fisheries. However, one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality among fishermen is decompression sickness (DCS). We report the case of a 46-year-old male fisherman diver who presented with chronic inguinal pain that radiated to the lower left limb. Living and working in a fishing port in Yucatan, he had a prior history of DCS. A diagnosis of avascular necrosis in the left femoral head secondary to DCS was made via analysis of clinical and radiological findings. The necrosis was surgically resolved by a total hip arthroplasty. Dysbaric osteonecrosis is a more probable diagnosis. In this region fishermen undergo significant decompression stress in their daily fishing efforts. Further studies regarding prevalence of dysbaric osteonecrosis among small-scale fisheries divers are needed. In a community where DCS is endemic and has become an epidemic, as of late, the perception of this health risk remains low. Furthermore, training and decompression technique are lacking among the fishing communities.
