We propose a micromechanics-based mean-field homogenization scheme for the viscoelastic-viscoplastic particulate-reinforced composite which is applicable to predict its mechanical response under complex loading conditions. We apply a formulation based on an incrementally affine scheme by using algorithmic tangent operators, while adaptively adjusting the strain of each constituent at every step of the loading process to ensure the consistency of the accumulated strain state and the concentration tensor. We name the method adaptive incrementally affine method. Despite mathematically rigorous derivation, the method has some errors in plastic deformation regime. We propose an assumption for better prediction which dropping out the affine strain and affine stress in adaptive scheme. We show that the adaptive incrementally affine scheme is able to predict the viscoelastic response very well. Still, it is inevitable that the plastic deformation of the composite is initiated earlier than our mean-field theoretical prediction because of the local stress concentration near the particulate. Hence, we propose a yield reduction method that enforces the earlier initiation of the plastic deformation in the matrix phase when obtaining an effective mechanical response. We show that the predictions from the adaptive incrementally affine scheme adjusted with the yield reduction match well with various numerical simulations on particulate-reinforced composites considering viscoelastic, elastic-viscoplastic, and viscoelastic-viscoplastic matrices under uniaxial, cyclic, and bi-axial loadings.

The paper discusses experimental observations and some related theoretical results associated with the mechanical response of two Ti3Al matrix composites, subjected to transverse loading. Both composites contain continuous unidirectional fibers; however, there are considerable differences in the composition of the two interfaces. The Ti3Al/SCS-6 system contains brittle reaction products around the fibers that degrade the strength of the composite. The second composite consists of a Ti3Al matrix reinforced by sapphire fibers that are strongly bonded to the matrix. Experimental observations indicate that the damage mechanisms in the two composites are substantially different. Utilizing elastic analyses of the local stress field, an attempt was made to explain the dependence of the observed damage mechanisms on the residual field and the properties of the interface.

Modern polishing, precision machining and microindentation techniques allow the processing and mechanical characterization of ceramics at nanometric scales and within entirely plastic deformation regimes. The mechanical response of most ceramics to such highly constrained contact is not predictable from macroscopic properties and the microstructural deformation patterns have proven difficult to characterize by the application of any individual technique. In this study, TEM techniques of contrast analysis and CBED are combined with stereographic analysis to construct a three-dimensional microstructure deformation map of the surface of a perfectly plastic microindentation on macroscopically brittle aluminum nitride. The bright field image in Figure 1 shows a lg Vickers microindentation contained within a single AlN grain far from any boundaries. High densities of dislocations are evident, particularly near facet edges but are not individually resolvable. The prominent bend contours also indicate the severity of plastic deformation. Figure 2 is a selected area diffraction pattern covering the entire indentation area.

The properties of spin crossover (SCO) nanoparticles were studied for five 2D hexagonal lattice structures of increasing sizes embedded in a matrix, thus affecting the thermal properties of the SCO region. These effects were modeled using the Ising-like model in the framework of local mean field approximation (LMFA). The systematic combined effect of the different types of couplings, consisting of (i) bulk short- and long-range interactions and (ii) edge and corner interactions at the surface mediated by the matrix environment, were investigated by using parameter values typical of SCO complexes. Gradual two and three hysteretic transition curves from the LS to HS states were obtained. The results were interpreted in terms of the competition between the structure-dependent order and disorder temperatures (TO.D.) of internal coupling origin and the ligand field-dependent equilibrium temperatures (Teq) of external origin.

AbstractEpithelial branch elongation is a central developmental process during branching morphogenesis in diverse organs. This fundamental growth process into large arborized epithelial networks is accompanied by structural reorganization of the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM), well beyond its mechanical linear response regime. Here, we report that epithelial ductal elongation within human mammary organoid branches relies on the non-linear and plastic mechanical response of the surrounding collagen. Specifically, we demonstrate that collective back-and-forth motion of cells within the branches generates tension that is strong enough to induce a plastic reorganization of the surrounding collagen network which results in the formation of mechanically stable collagen cages. Such matrix encasing in turn directs further tension generation, branch outgrowth and plastic deformation of the matrix. The identified mechanical tension equilibrium sets a framework to understand how mechanical cues can direct ductal branch elongation.

ABSTRACTBased on the weight function theory and Hutchinson's technique, the analytic form of the toughness change near a crack-tip is derived. The inhomogeneity toughening is treated as an average quantity calculated from the mean-field approach. The solutions are suitable for the composite materials with moderate concentration as compared with Hutchinson's lowest order formula. The composite has the more toughened property if the matrix owns the higher value of the Poisson ratio. The composite with thin-disc inclusions obtains the highest toughening and that with spheres always provides the least effective one. For the microcrack toughening, the variations of the crack shape do not significantly affect the toughness change if the Budiansky and O'Connell crack density parameter is used. The explicit forms for three types of the void toughening and two types of the microcrack toughening are also shown.

Interfacial behavior in the microstructure and the plastic deformation in the protein matrix influence the overall mechanical properties of biological hard tissues. A cohesive finite element model has been developed to investigate the inelastic mechanical properties of bone-like biocomposites consisting of hard mineral crystals embedded in soft biopolymer matrix. In this study, the complex interaction between plastic dissipation in the matrix and bonding properties of the interface between minerals and matrix is revealed, and the effect of such interaction on the toughening of bone-like biocomposites is identified. For the case of strong and intermediate interfaces, the toughness of biocomposites is controlled by the post yield behavior of biopolymer; the matrix with low strain hardening can undergo significant plastic deformation, thereby promoting enhanced fracture toughness of biocomposites. For the case of weak interfaces, the toughness of biocomposites is governed by the bonding property of the interface, and the post-yield behavior of biopolymer shows negligible effect on the toughness. The findings of this study help to direct the path for designing bioinspired materials with superior mechanical properties.

Abstract Titanium alloys’ excellent mechanical and physical properties make it the most popular material widely used in aerospace, medical, nuclear and other significant industries. The study of titanium alloys mainly focused on the macroscopic mechanical mechanism. However, very few researches addressed the nanostructure of titanium alloys and its mechanical response in Nano-machining due to the difficulty to perform and characterize nano-machining experiment. Compared with nano-machining, nano-indentation is easier to characterize the microscopic plasticity of titanium alloys. This research presents a nano-indentation molecular dynamics model in titanium to address its microstructure alteration, plastic deformation and other mechanical response at the atomistic scale. Based on the molecular dynamics model, a complete nano-indentation cycle, including the loading and unloading stages, is performed by applying Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS). The plastic deformation mechanism of nano-indentation of titanium with a rigid diamond ball tip was studied under different indentation velocities. At the same time, the influence of different environment temperatures on the nano-plastic deformation of titanium is analyzed under the condition of constant indentation velocity. The simulation results show that the Young’s modulus of pure titanium calculated based on nano-indentation is about 110GPa, which is very close to the experimental results. The results also show that the mechanical behavior of titanium can be divided into three stages: elastic stage, yield stage and plastic stage during the nano-indentation process. In addition, indentation speed has influence on phase transitions and nucleation of dislocations in the range of 0.1–1.0 Å/ps.

Abstract This paper presents a numerical study on pipes ductile fracture mechanical response using a phenomenological computational damage model. The damage is controlled by an initiation criterion dependent on the stress triaxiality and the Lode angle parameter, and a post-initiation damage law to eliminate each finite element from the mesh. Experimental tests were carried out to calibrate the elastoplastic response, damage parameters and validate the FEM models. The tested geometries were round bars having smooth and notched cross-section, flat notched specimens under axial tensile loads, and fracture toughness tests in deeply cracked bending specimens SE(B) and compact tension samples C(T). The calibrated numerical procedure was applied to execute a parametric study in pipes with circumferential surface cracks subjected to tensile and internal pressure loads simultaneously. The effects of the variation of geometric parameters and the load applications on the pipes strain capacity were investigated. The influence of longitudinal misalignment between adjacent pipes was also investigated.
