Perceived quality (PQ) is one of the most important product attributes in the automotive industry that defines successful automotive design. This paper presents a new approach regarding PQ assessment by examining PQ decomposed into a structure with the top-down approach to the level of basic (“ground”) attributes, covering almost every aspect of car quality perception from the engineering viewpoint. The paper proposes a novel method for PQ attributes relative importance ranking, resulting in the PQ balance of the vehicle, within the given conditions. The proposed method helps to reach the equilibrium of the vehicle’s quality equation from the perspective of design effort, time and costs estimations. The authors introduce the Perceived Quality Framework (PQF), which is the taxonomy system for PQ attributes and the core of the attributes importance ranking method. The research outcomes are based on findings of qualitative exploratory study that includes the European and North American premium and luxury automotive manufacturers. To validate the proposed method, an industrial pilot study was performed with one of the automotive companies to examine the PQ attributes importance ranking obtained from automotive industry professionals. The results can significantly improve PQ assessment during all stages of product development.

Perceived quality refers to customers’ cognitive and emotional responses to a particular design, often also associated with craftsmanship and customer satisfaction. Previous research defined a taxonomy of perceived quality and provided understanding about how engineering design decisions impact customer satisfaction. Furthermore, development of new products is frequently based on carrying over attributes of existing products, either from the same producer or from competitors. Previous research offered a new product development methodology combining variations of subsystems to carry over from existing products. This brief presents how these two lines of research combined to design the central console of the Porsche Panamera automobile and discusses the opportunities and challenges posed in the practical implementation of this research.

Creating an accurate awareness of the environment using laser scanners is a major challenge in robotics and auto industries. LiDAR (light detection and ranging) is a powerful laser scanner that provides a detailed map of the environment. However, efficient and accurate mapping of the environment is yet to be obtained, as most modern environments contain glass, which is invisible to LiDAR. In this paper, a method to effectively detect and localise glass using LiDAR sensors is proposed. This new approach is based on the variation of range measurements between neighbouring point clouds, using a two-step filter. The first filter examines the change in the standard deviation of neighbouring clouds. The second filter uses a change in distance and intensity between neighbouring pules to refine the results from the first filter and estimate the glass profile width before updating the cartesian coordinate and range measurement by the instrument. Test results demonstrate the detection and localisation of glass and the elimination of errors caused by glass in occupancy grid maps. This novel method detects frameless glass from a long range and does not depend on intensity peak with an accuracy of 96.2%.

AbstractIn this article, an efficient analytical technique, called Laplace–Adomian decomposition method, is used to obtain the solution of fractional Zakharov– Kuznetsov equations. The fractional derivatives are described in terms of Caputo sense. The solution of the suggested technique is represented in a series form of Adomian components, which is convergent to the exact solution of the given problems. Furthermore, the results of the present method have shown close relations with the exact approaches of the investigated problems. Illustrative examples are discussed, showing the validity of the current method. The attractive and straightforward procedure of the present method suggests that this method can easily be extended for the solutions of other nonlinear fractional-order partial differential equations.

This paper considers the H∞ control problem for a class of singular Markovian jump systems (SMJSs), where the jumping signal is not always available. The main contribution of this paper introduces a new approach to a mode-independent (MI) H∞ controller by exploiting the nonfragile method. Based on the given method, a unified control approach establishing a direct connection between mode-dependent (MD) and mode-independent controllers is presented, where both existence conditions are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Moreover, another three cases of transition probability rate matrix (TRPM) with elementwise bounded uncertainties, being partially unknown and to be designed are analyzed, respectively. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

AbstractThe article discusses the utilitarian problem of the mobile collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment. Due to its $$\mathcal {NP}$$ NP -hard nature, implies the application of approximate methods to discover suboptimal solutions in an acceptable time. The paper presents the proposal of a novel method of designing the Evolutionary and Memetic Algorithms, which determine favorable route plans. The recommended methods are determined using quality evaluation indicators for the techniques applied herein, subject to the limits characterizing the given company. The proposed Memetic Algorithm with Tabu Search provides much better results than the metaheuristics described in the available literature.

The use of conventional machining processes has been subject to important decline probably due to the increment in the use of emerging technologies. Therefore, the main applications of these traditional processes, such as automotive industry, are in crisis. In order to have a chance to compete successfully in the new trends, the machining industry must meet the needs of alternative sectors such as biomedical field. The aim of this study is to prove the capacity of micro-milling, by machining complex micro-cavities on aluminum workpiece using a conventional milling machine. Results are obtained by evaluating accuracy and geometric features. This study finds that the feed per tooth is a significant factor in order to obtain better results. The use of coolant increases the tool wear and therefore dimensional errors. This scope is a potential opportunity to reutilize the conventional machines from a new approach.

AbstractIn this study, a novel method for the synthesis of hybrid, porous microspheres, including divinylbenzene (DVB), triethoxyvinylsilane (TEVS) and methacrylated lignin (L-Met), is presented. The methacrylic derivatives of kraft lignin were obtained by reaction with methacryloyl chloride according to a new experimental protocol. The course of the modification of lignin was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance (ATR-FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The emulsion-suspension polymerization method was employed to obtain copolymers of DVD, TEVS and L-Met in spherical forms. The porous structures and morphologies of the obtained lignin-containing functionalized microspheres were investigated by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption data and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microspheres are demonstrated to be mesoporous materials with specific surface areas in the range of 430–520 m2/g. The effects of the lignin component on the porous structure, shape, swelling and thermal properties of the microspheres were evaluated.

Presented is the concept of paint shop operation for the automotive industry – Paint Shop 4.0, based on the ideas of Industry 4.0 and Digital Factory. A new approach to the issue of car body sequencing, taking into account the actual structure of the paint shop department with buffers, has been presented. In the created application, proprietary car body sequencing algorithms were implemented.

ABSTRACTChanges in species diversity often result from species losses and gains. The dynamic nature of beta diversity (i.e., spatial variation in species composition) that derives from such temporal species turnover, however, has been largely overlooked. Here, we disentangled extinction and colonization components of beta diversity by using the sets of species that went locally extinct and that newly colonized the given sites. We applied this concept of extinction and colonization beta diversity to plant communities that have been repeatedly measured in experimentally disturbed forests. We first found no difference in beta diversity across disturbance gradients when it was analyzed for communities at a single point in time. From this result, we might conclude that disturbance caused no impact on how species assemble across space. However, when we analyzed the extinction and colonization beta diversity, both measures were found to be significantly lower in disturbed sites compared to undisturbed sites. These results indicate that disturbance removed similar subsets of species across space, making communities differentiate, but at the same time induced spatially uniform colonization of new species, causing communities to homogenize. Consequently, the effects of these two processes canceled each other out. The relative importance of extinction and colonization components per se also changed temporally after disturbance. Analyses using extinction and colonization beta diversity allowed us to detect nonrandom dis- and re-assembly dynamics in plant communities. Our results suggest that common practices of analyzing beta diversity at one point in time can mask significant variation driven by disturbance. Acknowledging the extinction–colonization dynamics behind beta diversity is essential for understanding the spatiotemporal organization of biodiversity.

Abstract Problems in the field of engineering design represent an important class of real world problems that typically require a fuzzy and imprecise representation. This article presents and discusses a new approach to model this type of problem, by incorporating linguistic descriptions together with a variety of user-defined trade-off strategies. An interactive computer application is introduced, using stochastic optimization to solve the design task by producing a specially desired output under the given environmental conditions which are partly caused by the personal preferences of the engineer and by the expectations of the customer. It utilizes a randomized evolutionary technique, made suitable for the class of problems at hand, to generate and to optimize design solutions that are later identified by a clustering algorithm. Moreover test problems that were solved by the application are considered. In all cases the good solutions were obtained by evaluating only an extremely small fraction of all possible designs.
