Although politicians and intelligence analysts have criticized Russian interference in the 2016 and 2018 elections, international lawyers seem to be at a loss for how to understand the particular harm posed by this interference. In addition to the hacking of email accounts and disclosure of private information, the most salient aspect of the interference was the use of social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, to sow division and heighten nativist tendencies within the electorate. Strictly speaking, the goal of the 2016 interference was to delegitimize a potential Clinton presidency or to help elect Donald Trump as president. But far more important was the method used to accomplish these goals: the impersonation of American citizens during participation in the political process. This latter development points to the real harm of election interference, which has less to do with sovereignty and more to do with the collective right of self- determination. Foreign interference is a violation of the membership rules for political decision-making, i.e., the idea that only members of a polity should participate in elections—not only with regard to voting but also with regard to financial contributions and other forms of electoral participation. Outsiders are free to express their opinions but covertly representing themselves as insiders constitutes a violation of these political norms, which are constitutive of the notion of self- determination, just as much as covertly funneling foreign money to one candidate. The only solution to this form of election interference is transparency, i.e., to expose such interventions for what they are: attempts by foreigners to make political statements while pretending to be Americans. This article ends by cataloguing the mistakes of the Obama Administration in failing to expose this interference in real time—which is the only way to nullify its insidious impact. Ex post investigations, prosecutions, and counter-measures designed to deter future misbehavior are all insufficient to nullify the impact of electoral interference. However, recent efforts by the Justice Department and the FBI, including a new policy codified in the US Attorneys Manual, and contemporaneous indictments of Russians for interference in the 2018 election, suggest that some government actors finally understand that transparency is the only solution to election interference.

Social media (SM) tools have an immense potential in e-marketing and online shopping. However, there is a lack of researches on the use of social media platform as effective marketing tools. This study has aimed to investigate the revolution of social media in Saudi Arabia through understanding the impact of two popular SM platforms (Instagram and Snapchat) on the purchasing decision of Saudi customers through advertisements and blogger recommendations. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to develop a model, which was tested using Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results indicated a positive impact of social media platforms on the purchasing decision of young female users. Moreover, the effectiveness of these platforms in generating electronic-word of mouth (eWOM) among consumers was highlighted. However, further research is needed to promote marketeers and consumers' awareness in the digital marketplace.

PurposeThe current study seeks to present and examine the strategies, management and dissemination of information on social media platforms by Israeli government organizations and agencies.Design/methodology/approachThe article uses the “Case Study” approach, through semi-structured, in-depth interviews conducted with directors in charge of the use of social media in government departments.FindingsThe findings indicate that government agencies tend to favor Facebook over other social network platforms, in order to reach the widest possible audience. They do this by adhering to the platform's limitations, such as regularly using sponsored advertising to increase reach and visibility, and also by publishing visual content, such as videos and images, at the expense of text. In addition, the impact of respondents to adopt social media outweighs the use and importance awarded to traditional government websites. A clear preference is evident toward cultivating and strengthening existing information on social media at the expense of further developing official websites.Originality/valueFindings and conclusions from this type of research can help digital media directors and content editors in government agencies, to improve the quality of their content and improve the accessibility of the information they share online. In addition, the findings of the study strengthen the growing body of knowledge focused on the relationship between government ministries and social media.

Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, are now part of almost everyone's social life, especially for the newer generations. Children and teenagers grew up together with these Internet-based services, which have become an integral part of their personal and social life. However, as reported in various studies, psychological and psychiatric problems are sometimes associated with problematic usage of social media. The primary purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the cognitive, psychological, and social outcomes correlated with a problematic use of social media sites during the developmental stages, from age 10 to 19 years. With a specific focus on depression, anxiety, eating, and neurodevelopmental disorders, the review also discusses evidence related to genetic and neurobiological issues, together with the implications in clinical work and future directions under a multidisciplinary perspective. While the scientific community has made significant progress in enhancing our understanding of the impact of social media on teenagers' lives, more research integrating biological and environmental factors is required to fully elucidate the development of these disorders.

This chapter discusses the role of social media in the uprisings of the Arab world. It argues that the seemingly democratizing impact of online activism is not due to the inherent nature of social media as a tool for democracy but rather an outcome of the equilibrium of forces that shaped the use of social media platforms by all three main players. Activists, governments, and social media firms formed a triangle of powers that influenced the use of social media during the Arab movements. In a different context, the outcome of such power balance can arguably inhibit citizens' rights and empower governments. To this end, the chapter first explores the use of social media platforms from the perspective of activists, governments, and social media firms, then presents a framework to understand the impact of all three in shaping the use of social media during the uprisings. The chapter then concludes that the projections of the role of social media on other movements in the world must not be made without understanding the underlying complexities and dynamics of these movements.

Society faces a fundamental global problem of understanding which individuals are currently developing strong support for some extremist entity such as ISIS (Islamic State), even if they never end up doing anything in the real world. The importance of online connectivity in developing intent has been confirmed by recent case studies of already convicted terrorists. Here we use ideas from Complexity to identify dynamical patterns in the online trajectories that individuals take toward developing a high level of extremist support, specifically, for ISIS. Strong memory effects emerge among individuals whose transition is fastest and hence may become “out of the blue” threats in the real world. A generalization of diagrammatic expansion theory helps quantify these characteristics, including the impact of changes in geographical location, and can facilitate prediction of future risks. By quantifying the trajectories that individuals follow on their journey toward expressing high levels of pro-ISIS support—irrespective of whether they then carry out a real-world attack or not—our findings can help move safety debates beyond reliance on static watch-list identifiers such as ethnic background or immigration status and/or postfact interviews with already convicted individuals. Given the broad commonality of social media platforms, our results likely apply quite generally; for example, even on Telegram where (like Twitter) there is no built-in group feature as in our study, individuals tend to collectively build and pass through the so-called super-group accounts.

In this technical world, young youth of India enjoyed to spend their foremost time on social media. Not only in cities but also in rural areas, it found that the present generation has attraction towards social media. In today’s world, life cannot be imagined without social media like WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts etc. In the present work, we have study the impact of use of social media on academic performance and moral values of students located in omerga sub-district. This expressive, investigative study surveyed the types of social media platforms students commonly use, the amount of time students spend on social media, the purposes for which students use the social media and the influence of social media use on students’ academic as well as social life. The study also found that majority of students agreed that their educational performance is influenced due to the massive use of social media. Additionally, near about 50% students from these colleges think them self as they are addicted to use of social media. Keywords: Social media, Students life, Academic performance, Molar values.

Current students are constantly engaged with social media platforms not only for entertainment and interaction, but also to gain and share information. Even though various studies have been conducted on the use of social media in education, there is lack of evidence on the influence of social media on accounting students particularly in Malaysian setting. This study aims to investigate the impact of the usage intensity of social media on accounting students’ performance. It is discovered that the utilization of social media in their learning activities has influenced the student’s academic achievement after considering their proficiency and gender. In contrast, social presence and social interaction have no impact on the students’ performance.

The different characteristics that describe individual regions lead to significant differences in the ability to raise capital in the form of investment in the regional structure. This is largely determined by factors that are taken into account in the process of localization of investment by potential investors (also from abroad), more broadly identified with localization factors or synthesized using the index of investment attractiveness. It was substantiated that investors ’decisions are influenced by a number of subjective factors that are quite difficult to measure, and they express an individual system of preferences, partly determined by the investor’s knowledge, including the image of the region. It was proposed during the analysis of investment attractiveness of the region to determine the real investment attractiveness, which should be interpreted from the standpoint of “popularity” of investing in a particular sphere. Since the region is able to absorb financial and physical capital in the form of investment, the definition by analyzing the value of investment in enterprises or foreign direct investment allowed to identify the disadvantage of this approach as an opportunity to analyze attractiveness based on ex post investment in contrast to the ex ante approach. It also established that the real investment attractiveness can be assessed on the basis of past investments and thus select the region that attracted the most of them, and relatively symptomatic variables can be indicated, the increase of which will indicate increasing attractiveness. It was proposed to divide location factors into “hard” and “soft” by the nature of the impact, which correspondently will allow identifying directly with the cost of doing business and income and – the subjective feelings of investors and their internal value system.

Many small-medium size enterprises (SMEs) are adopting social media platforms to contact their potential customers and provide their services. The impact of this adoption on the SME's performance has been roughly examined by researchers in the Middle East region particularly Palestine. Constructs and variables of three models (TOE, TAM, TPB) were used as potential predictors of social media adoption including technological, organizational, environmental context, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude toward technology, and capability to control technology. Furthermore, the influence of this adoption on SMEs performance was also tested. A closed question questionnaire was used to gather the data, and simple regression analysis was used to examine the hypotheses.  Findings revealed that all of the seven independent construct/variables except the technological context positively influence SME's adoption of social media, and social media adoption in turn positively influence SME's performance. The findings may be beneficial to SMEs's managers and the authorities as well to facilitate the use of social media by SMEs.
