Modern society is virtually inconceivable without mobile devices and the consequent use of mobile services. The multitude of technologies incorporated in the tiniest space has turned mobile phones, and smart phones in particular, into the Swiss knives of our times. What is currently perceived to be one of the most promising technologies for the future is Near Field Communication (NFC), which will most likely become the standard in mobile devices in the years to come. Due to the novel nature of this technology, the assessment of its importance for the tourism industry is still relatively unclear. The author is one of the first to focus on NFC in tourism, with the aim of introducing NFC technology and drafting first responses to the following questions: What benefit can NFC technology have for tourism and what functionalities can it trigger? What are the possible future applications in tourism and what challenges will tourism be faced with in this respect?The Gaze: Journal of Tourism and Hospitality Vol.5 2013 pp.1-12

The working together of tourism industry, governmental agencies, and assisted reproduction facilities is critical to the success of reproductive tourism business. If we have to draw up a theory of reproductive tourism, similarly, it has to come from multidisciplinary perspectives that include healthcare research, tourism and hospitality research, consumer behavior research, public policy research, among others. This chapter is an attempt to bring together ideas from different contributory areas to weave together a theory of reproductive tourism. The nuanced business environment of Greece, our destination of special focus, for reproductive tourism will also be discussed.


NFC devices are used in contactless payment systems, similar to those used in credit cards electronic ticket smartcards and allow mobile payment to replace and supplement these systems. Specifically, combining NFC enabled devices or NFC mobile phones with RFID tags offers additional benefits when compared to traditional RFID solutions. When an application requires that a device have frequent interaction with tags at numerous process points, the high expense of using traditional handheld RFID readers is cost prohibitive. By replacing handheld readers with NFC-enabled phones at data collection points, the ROI for the application increases. HID Trusted Tag® Services is an example of an application that combines HID Global's patented Near Field Communication (NFC) trusted tag technology and cloud-based authentication platform to add unique and trusted identities to everyday objects that can be read by NFC-enabled mobile devices. This is ideal for establishing proof of presence, digital out of home (DOOH) and electronic visitor verification (EVV) and also serves as a real-world application of the Internet of Things (IoT) that has been discussed in Chapter 1. Some of the examples of NFC based mobile devices is discussed in the chapter.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the evolution of the training and development field and present our projections for future inquiry in this important domain. Design/methodology/approach This submission is intended for possible publication as a perspective article as per the editor’s call regarding the Platinum Jubilee; thus, it is a brief review of the focal topic and projection of the future. Findings Employee training and development will continue to be a priority for the hospitality and tourism industry. The systems framework has been clearly established, but it is evident that additional inquiry is needed to explain how the various framework elements are related. In the decades to come, this framework will be expanded to account for the complexities that emerge from the prolific growth in information and resources for supporting training and development. Research limitations/implications While based on decades of previous research, it is always difficult to predict the future, especially 75 years out. Originality/value This paper offers a research primer on the focal topic and prescription for future efforts.

Near Field Communication (NFC) is increasingly being employed in modern consumer devices and until now it has been used for mobile payments. However, on further investigation there are other areas where NFC has a key role. Recent developments in Medical and ticketing based NFC applications show promise for being the so called “Catalyst” for NFC's integration. The objective of this research was to determine if mobile payments will be the catalyst for a more widespread integration of NFC into society and how NFC technology will impact on everyday life. Research Methods comprised questionnaire and interviews to gain further insight into the current standing of NFC. The findings indicated that NFC will not mature enough to be classified as viral by 2016, especially with contactless payments as no decisions seem to have been made for any progression. It is that most likely outcome that NFC will mature enough at the very latest in 2018, with further development in the years to come for unique serialisation and the internet of things. Managerial implications for this research extend to the medical sector where large gains can be made in better patient care and remote diagnostics leading to a more efficient service.

The navigation ecosystem is rapidly changing. Indoor navigation has attracted attention with the introduction of mobile devices into the market. Although mobile devices are used more often for outdoor navigation, they have opened up opportunities for indoor navigation proponents. Near Field Communication in indoor navigation is still in its exploratory stage. Despite an increase in the variety of indoor navigation research, challenges remain in designing a framework that is neither complex nor expensive. NFC is a novel method of navigating in indoor environments. Providing an overview of its benefits and usefulness compared with existing indoor navigation technologies is the subject of this chapter.

Today, users can access in the network environments anywhere and anytime through a mobile devices. These environments also can be able to perform mobile payment through these devices anytime and anywhere. Especially, in case of a recently being spotlighted NFC can operate high-strength crypto algorithms unlike the existing RFID. And also, this supports the technology as ‘Tag to Device’, ‘Device to Device’. Recently, various studies are being actively researched about the mobile payment system through these NFC devices. In case of existing papers are performed payment steps using most of a Public Key(PKI) or Symmetric-Key based heavy crypto algorithms, therefore, can be slow than how to use a hash-function and XOR. And also, environment construction of tracing, storing and managing about payment information is not strong. In this paper, to solve these problems, we were able to improve on performing time by lightweight authentication method using a hash function and XOR algorithms. And also, we designed that data about the payment information safe can be stored into the USIM File System. Thus, because of this method, we propose a scheme that can be traced about the deny payment.

The use of near field communication (NFC), a type of wireless technology that allows data transfer by bringing two devices closer together, has been increasing very rapidly. NFC offers great ease to its users through its contactless operation and provides the optimum environment for wireless communication with other technologies. Users with NFC-enabled mobile phones can share websites, contact information, phone numbers, music files, videos, and photos and can also unlock doors and can use their phones as mobile wallets to make purchases safely and easily. In recent years, with the increasing use of technology, it is clear that NFC technology is promising for the tourism industry. This chapter provides background on NFC technology. The features of NFC technology and its advantages and disadvantages for the tourism industry are evaluated. NFC technology applications (data sharing, payments, tickets, keys, etc.) for the tourism industry are explained. Finally, examples of NFC applications in the tourism industry are discussed for both tourists and sector stakeholders.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of how disasters, natural and human induced disasters, terrorist attacks, civil and political unrest and other crises affect tourism positively and negatively. Design/methodology/approach This paper briefly analyzes case studies to establish the underpinnings of tourism disruption in the midst of disasters and crises. Findings This paper outlines how various crises and disasters affect the tourism industry and what processes can be used to enhance or restructure the industry through communication plans, the media and stakeholder collaborative efforts. Originality/value While disasters and crises are not new, this paper offers a series of recommendations and insights to help quickly restore a normal state of tourism and hospitality functioning and build a more resilient path for tourism for generations to come.
