NFC Devices

NFC devices are used in contactless payment systems, similar to those used in credit cards electronic ticket smartcards and allow mobile payment to replace and supplement these systems. Specifically, combining NFC enabled devices or NFC mobile phones with RFID tags offers additional benefits when compared to traditional RFID solutions. When an application requires that a device have frequent interaction with tags at numerous process points, the high expense of using traditional handheld RFID readers is cost prohibitive. By replacing handheld readers with NFC-enabled phones at data collection points, the ROI for the application increases. HID Trusted Tag® Services is an example of an application that combines HID Global's patented Near Field Communication (NFC) trusted tag technology and cloud-based authentication platform to add unique and trusted identities to everyday objects that can be read by NFC-enabled mobile devices. This is ideal for establishing proof of presence, digital out of home (DOOH) and electronic visitor verification (EVV) and also serves as a real-world application of the Internet of Things (IoT) that has been discussed in Chapter 1. Some of the examples of NFC based mobile devices is discussed in the chapter.

En este trabajo se describe en detalle NFC y se realiza un análisis de red basado en gráficos para determinar los participantesy las industrias involucradas en la red, así como las relaciones, incluyendo los conflictos, cooperaciones o alianzas entre los actores.Abstract:The recent development of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology has enabled the emergence of payment services using mobile phones. Furthermore, this technological innovation initiated an ongoing evolution concerning payment transactions. Companies and researchers project that the prevalent function of credit cards will be progressively substituted by mobile devices. In this paper NFC is described in detail and a graphed based network analysis is performed to determine players and industries involved in the network as well as the relations, including conflicts, cooperation, or alliances between these actors.

With electronic payment systems becoming the quintessence of today’s technologically driven society, the integration of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology in this field has made the experience of consumers at point of sale (POS) terminals exponentially favorable. This technology, based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and implemented to allow for short-range communication to be possible, has been adopted worldwide in a variety of applications and has enabled the secure bidirectional exchange of data between two NFC enabled devices. NFC allows communication between two NFC-enabled devices within a range of 10 centimeters. The integration of NFC into mobile devices has greatly increased the capabilities of mobile phones, with the potential to do even more. This occurrence has prompted a number of studies on NFC. At the same time, there are substantial issues about customer satisfaction, privacy, speed, and convenience, among other things.

Smartphones are becoming increasingly versatile thanks to the wide variety of sensor and actuator systems packed in them. Mobile devices today go well beyond their original purpose as communication devices, and this enables important new applications, ranging from augmented reality to the Internet of Things. Personalized diagnostics is one of the areas where mobile devices can have the greatest impact. Hitherto, the camera and communication abilities of these devices have been barely exploited for point of care (POC) purposes. This short review covers the recent evolution of mobile devices in the area of POC diagnostics and puts forward some ideas that may facilitate the development of more advanced applications and devices in the area of personalized diagnostics. With this purpose, the potential exploitation of wireless power and actuation of sensors and biosensors using near field communication (NFC), the use of the screen as a light source for actuation and spectroscopic analysis, using the haptic module to enhance mass transport in micro volumes, and the use of magnetic sensors are discussed.

The evolution of modern mobile devices towards novel Radio Frequency (RF) capabilities, such as Near Field Communication, leads to a potential for delivering innovative mobile services, which is still partially unexplored. Mobile proximity payment systems are going to enhance the daily shopping experience, but the access to payment security resources of a mobile device (e.g. the “Secure Element”) by third party applications is still blocked by smartphone and Operating System manufacturers. In this paper, the IDA-Pay system is presented, an innovative and secure NFC micro-payment system based on Peer-to-Peer NFC operating mode for Android mobile phones. It allows to deliver mobile-to-POS micro-payment services, bypassing the need for special hardware. A validation scenario and a system evaluation are also reported to demonstrate the system effectiveness and performance.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a revolutionary concept that emerged in the late 21st century, whereby everyday objects such as household items, cars, and wearables, equipped with sensors and (Radio Frequency Identification) RFID chips, can communicate with the internet and to their physical surroundings. These chips allow the connected items to share information, and allow the user to collect information about his/her “quantified self”, measuring personal data such as habits of usage, lifestyle, and location through internet networks. IoT enabled devices are designed to collect, store, share, and analyze of highly personal data ubiquitously and in real time. However, with this new affordance of connectivity, comes a potential loss of privacy for users, as ever increasing sets of personal data are collected and tracked. As such, there is a pressing need for privacy considerations to be embedded within the early stages of design of connected devices and networks.

This article determines the overview of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the multifaceted applications of the IoT. The IoT is made up of hardware and software technologies. The IoT describes a world in which everyday objects are connected to a network so that data can be shared. The IoT refers to the networking of physical objects through the use of embedded sensors, actuators, and other devices that can collect and transmit information about the objects. The data amassed from these devices can be analyzed to optimize products, services, and operations. For the IoT to flourish, interoperability must apply across all parts of the system, including the transmission networks and the data being transmitted. The IoT enables the multifaceted applications ranging from the micro to the macro, and from the trivial to the critical perspectives.
