Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food-producing sector in the World and has exhibited continuous improving in total production throughout the recent decades. A carp polyculture experiment was carried out to evaluate the growth performance of major carps in semi-intensive fish culture system. Two earthen ponds located at Kadirganj of Boalia thana under Rajshahi district of Bangladesh were selected to study the effect of fertilizer (organic as cowdung and in-organic as triple super phosphate) in supplemented ponds on the growth of carps. Pond -01 was fertilized with cowdung and TSP at the rate of 1728 and 20 kg/h respectively, at 10-day intervals. Pond -02 was without fertilizer. Each pond was stocked with 30% Labeo rohita, 20% Catla catla, 15% Cirrhinus mrigala, 15% Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, and 20% Cyprinus carpio with a total stocking density of 10000/ha. Both ponds were supplemented with mustard oil cake, rice bran and maize bran at the rate of 2.5 kg/ha for each, given for a period of six months as daily basis. The net fish production was found to be 2605 and 1795 kg/ha/year in pond -01 and pond -02, respectively. The results showed that fish production was significantly higher in pond -01 than pond -02 (P<0.05). Pond -01 showed 1.45 times greater fish production than that of pond -02. The results of this study provided invaluable information for the sustainable aquaculture, as well as providing an important baseline for future studies within Bangladesh and surrounding developing countries.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/on.v9i1.5727

To evaluate the effect of nutrients enriched feed premix on the growth performance of major carps Rohu (Labeo rohita), Catla (Catla catla) and Mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) in a polyculture system, the present experiment was carried out in six earthen ponds located at Khulna University of Bangladesh for a period of 90 days. Two treatments each with three replications were stocked with 40% Rohu, 30% Catla and 30% Mrigal with a total stocking density of 10000/ha. T-2 was treated with feed premix at the rate of 4g/1 kg feed while T-1 was not treated with any feed premix. Both treatments were applied normal feed twice a day at the rate of 2% to 4% of the body weight of the fingerlings. The net fish production was found to be 2238.06 kg/ha and 3607.33 kg/ha in T-1 and T-2 respectively. The results showed that fish production was significantly higher in T-2 than T-1 (P<0.05). The experiment was operated in 9 consecutive weeks in nine earthen nursery ponds having the same area (0.09 acre) and depth (0.8 m). Seven days old fries of Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) were stocked at 4000, 5000 and 6000 fries/decimal in three treatments with three replications as T-1, T-2 and T-3, respectively to observe the growth and survival. At stocking, hatchlings were the same batch-rearing with an average length and weight of 0.44 ± 0.05 cm and 0.14 ± 0.05 mg, respectively. Wet mustered oil cake and commercial nursery feed containing 30% crude protein were given by two weeks interval, initially according to the bodyweight; the feeding rate was 14% in the first two weeks, gradually reduced to 12, 10 and 8%, respectively in the following week intervals. Water quality parameters and plankton sufficiency were observed every 15 days interval and was found within the acceptable range. Growth performance (6.458 g), survival rate of fingerlings (85.76%) and total production (22151g/decimal) were found highest in T-1 followed by T-2 and T-3. The study concluded that expect better production of fry up to fingerlings, proper stocking density should be maintained in pond fish culture in Jashore region of Bangladesh.

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the growth performance of carp polyculture system supplemented with different levels of supplementary feed. To undertake this investigation, two earthen ponds were stocked with 25% Labeo rohita, 25% Catla catla, 20% Labeo calbasu, 20% Ctenopharyngodon idella and 10% Hypopthalmichthys molitrix with a total stocking density of 10000/ha. The net fish production was found to be 2,166 and 3,874 kg/ha/yr in pond-01 and pond-02, respectively. The total cost of fish farming of pond-01 and pond-02 were 64,268 BDT and 88,568 BDT per ha. The total return of pond-01and pond-02 were BDT 1,04,280 BDT and 1,69,250 BDT per ha. Net benefit from pond-01 and pond-02 was 40,312 BDT and 80,682 BDT respectively. Net profit margin of pond-01 and pond-02 was 62.73% and 91.10%. And finally the benefit cost ratios (CBR) were found to be 0.62:1 and 0.91:1 in pond-01 and pond-02, respectively. Asiat. Soc. Investigation was carried out from June to August 2009. A total of 40 fish farmers were selected from northwest two upazila namely Debigonj (n=20) and Boda (n=20) where both men and women were targeted. Focus group discussion (FGD) and cross-check interview were conducted to get an overview on carp farming. From 1991-1995, 1996-2000 and after 2000; 17.5%, 45% and 37.5% of fish farmers started carp farming respectively. Average 77.5% of farmers acquired training from NFEP project while 10% of them from government officials. There were 55% seasonal and 45% perennial ponds with average pond size 0.09 ha. After phase out of NFEP project, 92.5% of fish farmers followed polyculture systems, while only 7.5% of them followed monoculture ones. Farmers did not use any lime, organic and inorganic fertilizers in their ponds before association with NFEP project. They used lime, cow dung, urea and T.S.P during pond preparation at the rate of 247, 2562.68, 46.36 and 27.29 kg.ha-1.y-1 respectively where stocking density at the rate of 10,775 fry.ha-1 after phase out of the project. Feeding was at the rate of 3-5% body weight.fish-1.day-1. Rice bran, wheat bran and mustard oil cake used at the rate of 1920, 220 and 110 kg.ha-1.y-1 respectively by 85% of fish farmers but 15% of them did not used any feed. Before NFEP project, average pond production was 408.55 kg.ha-1 but after phase out the project, fish production was 2,861.08 kg.ha-1. Peak culture and harvesting period lied from April to December and from November to January. Average 92.5% of farmers improved their livelihood through carp farming. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth performance of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) in cage stocking at different densities. It was expected that silver carp could grow feeding on plankton without external feeding. In this experiment, silver carps in nine cages were stocked in three different stocking densities such as 20, 30 and 40 fishes/m3 designated as treatments T1, T2 and T3, which were located in the south west corner of the L-shaped pond in Field Laboratory Complex, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh consisting of three treatments with three replications of each for a period of 90 days from 18th August to 17th November, 2015. Each cage size was 1m x 1m x1m (length x width x height) and silver carp was cultured in the cage with natural feed which filtered phytoplankton mainly. Twenty five genera of phytoplankton were identified in pond and the average phytoplankton production was around 8.44x105cells/liter. Water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and transparency were recorded fortnightly. At the completion of the experiment, weight showed significant difference (p>0.05) among three treatments although length didn’t vary significantly. The highest length gain (18.61+0.369 cm) and the highest weight gain (62.52+2.249 g) were found in T1. The highest SGR% for silver carp was found in T1 and the highest total production was obtained in T3 (5.00+ 0.015 kg/m3). Individual growth performance of silver carp was satisfactory. The potential and prospect of fish farming of Sreemangal, Moulvibazar was carried out from January to December 2015 by interviewing of 90 fish farmers with a well-structured questionnaire. The survey revealed that 40% of the ponds were seasonal and 60% perennial, of which 85% with single ownership and 15% accompanied by multiple ownership. The average pond size was 0.13 ha and depth 2.6 m. The ponds were prepared using of lime, cow dung, urea and TSP at the rate of 250, 250, 40 and 20 kg/ha, respectively. Nearly all of the farmers practiced polyculture with Indian major carps and exotic carps. Fish was stocked from March to June and average stocking density was 15,500 fingerlings/ha. To sustain natural food production, farmers generally used cow dung, urea and TSP at the rate of 2,600, 300 and 150 kg/ha/yr, respectively. Healthy environmental condition was maintained by applying lime and salt at 600 and 60 kg/ha/yr, respectively. The fish were fed by supplementary feed (45% farm) e.g., rice bran and mustard oil-cake with an average quantity of 2,200 and 550 kg/ha/yr, respectively and artificial pellet feed (55% farm). The average fish production, production cost and profit were found 2,945 kg/ha/yr, 1,25,940 and 94,935 Tk./ha/yr, respectively. The major constraints for sustainable pond fish farming were non-availability of fish fingerlings during stocking period, insufficient water in dry season, high production cost, poor technical knowledge, lack of money etc. By establishing more hatcheries, arranging training at farm level, providing interest free or at lower interest loan to the farmers the existing fish production could be increased.Res. The present experiment was carried out in the household ponds (0.04 to 0.08 ha in area with 1.3 to 2.4 m in depth) of small indigenous people at Barind Tract region, northwest Bangladesh during September, 2017 to June, 2018 to know the growth performance of bivalve with carp. Two different treatments with 3 replicates were used, in treatment one (T1) only the carp polyculture was performed and in treatment two (T2) carp and bivalve polyculture was performed. Good quality of carp fingerlings (Labeo rohita, Gibelion catla, Cirrhinus cirrhousus, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Ctenopharyngodon idella) and freshwater bivalve (Lamellidens marginalis) seeds were stocked in the ponds. Stocking density and size of the seeds were similar for all of the study ponds. During the experiment there were no significant differences was observed in growth performance of the fishes between the two different treatments (p<0.05). The weight gain was recorded for L. rohita 420.31 g in T1 and 436.25 g in T2, for G. catla 237.01 g in T1 and 329.66 g in T2, for C. cirrhosus 263.53 g in T1 and 301.74 g in T2, for H. molitrix 559.6 g in T1 and 593.57 g in T2, for C. idella 510.11 g in T1 and 619.57g in T2. The weight gain of L. marginalis was 12.3 g in T2. During this experiment the production of carp was recorded 2524.5 kg/ha in T1 and 2618.2 kg/ha in T2 and the bivalve production was 1284.4 kg/ha in T2. This study is the first report on growth performance of bivalve with carp in the Barind Tract region of northwest Bangladesh.
