An experiment was carried out to evaluate the growth performance of carp polyculture system supplemented with different levels of supplementary feed. To undertake this investigation, two earthen ponds were stocked with 25% Labeo rohita, 25% Catla catla, 20% Labeo calbasu, 20% Ctenopharyngodon idella and 10% Hypopthalmichthys molitrix with a total stocking density of 10000/ha. The net fish production was found to be 2,166 and 3,874 kg/ha/yr in pond-01 and pond-02, respectively. The total cost of fish farming of pond-01 and pond-02 were 64,268 BDT and 88,568 BDT per ha. The total return of pond-01and pond-02 were BDT 1,04,280 BDT and 1,69,250 BDT per ha. Net benefit from pond-01 and pond-02 was 40,312 BDT and 80,682 BDT respectively. Net profit margin of pond-01 and pond-02 was 62.73% and 91.10%. And finally the benefit cost ratios (CBR) were found to be 0.62:1 and 0.91:1 in pond-01 and pond-02, respectively. Asiat. Soc. This study was conducted on the 13 hatcheries of Rajshahi district from March to December 2013 to know about the fry production status, induced breeding practices and cost-profit status. Average fry production of Labeo rohita, 93.38±83.32 kg, Catla catla, 62.00±60.84 kg, Cirrhinus cirrhosus, 77.46±58.61 kg, L. calbasu, 14.20±14.60 kg, L. bata, 53.73±50.56 kg, L. gonia, 10.00±0 kg, Heteropneustes fossilis, 5.00±0 kg, Clarias batrachus, 20.00±0 kg, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, 149.77±138.45 kg, Aristichthys nobilis, 104.54±148.11 kg, Ctenopharyngodon idella, 19.20±15.35 kg, Cyprinus carpio 108.08±77.39 kg and Barbonymus gonionotus, 23.10±14.04 kg were recorded in the surveyed hatcheries. Two types of hormone injections PG (pituitary gland) and HCG (Human chorionic gonadotropin) were used for induced breeding. The rate of 1st dose of injection of PG varied from 1 to 2 mg/kg and HCG from 100-150 IU/kg and the rate of 2nd dose of injection of PG varied between 5 and 8 mg/kg. The incubation period and hatching rate in different fish species varied from 10 to 72 hours and 55% to 80%, respectively. The average total cost, gross return and net profit of the hatcheries were 0.667±0.798, 1.152±1.636 and 0.485±0.846 million BDT respectively.

It is shown that the leading role in the aquaculture of Iraq belongs to Cyprinids, which account for over 80 % of all fish farming production. The most widespread in the country are four main world species of carp aquaculture: common carp (Cyprinus carpio), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis). Basically, the traditional technology of growing Cyprinids in ponds is used, which includes the main fish farming processes: care of broodstock to prepare them for spawning, collecting eggs and milt, eggs fertilization and incubation of embryos, raising juveniles and marketable fish. Currently, there are about 2 thousand private fish farms, which have ponds of various sizes from 4 to 100 hectares. Cultivation of Cyprinids in Iraq is carried out mainly by extensive methods: the use of the natural food base of reservoirs with low fish stocking density in polyculture. The fish productivity of ponds varies greatly in different fish farms from 1,5 to 6 t/ha, which is due to economic reasons. The data on changes in the temperature of pond water during the year and hydrochemical indicators are given, which shows favorable conditions for Cyprinids rearing. Information on the use of compound feeds for growing carp in ponds is provided, and data on the composition and nutritional value of the feed used. The fish culture indicators for the main biotechnical processes of the rearing of four Cyprinid species in Iraq are described in detail. In the conclusion, it is indicated that for the effective development of aquaculture in Iraq, government support is needed in the form of a developed long-term program and legislative acts.

Potentials and prospects of pond fish farming in improving aquaculture system in Kaliakair upazila under Gazipur district, Bangladesh were investigated. Data were collected from 60 selected fish farmers through questionnaire survey and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) during June to November, 2014. The research revealed that a highest number of pond fish farmers (61.67%) were out of training facilities and a good portion (23.33%) had no education. Pond water was found turbid seasonally (71.66%) and farmers did not exchange water during culture periods (66.67%). As a result water quality deteriorates day by day and depletion of oxygen occurs during pond farming. The average stocking density of fish was higher in the study area and the highest was found in monoculture of Climbing perch (Anabas testudineus ) (1200 individual/decimal) and lowest in carp polyculture system (195 individual/decimal). Fish production was higher in Pangus monoculture system (17.89 MT/ha/yr) and lower in Climbing perch monoculture system (10.78 MT/ha/yr), but profit was higher in Climbing perch monoculture produced 1318100 Tk./ha/yr and lower in Tilapia monoculture 397886 Tk./ha/yr. Benefit Cost Ratio was higher in Climbing perch (2.32) and lower in Pangus culture (1.34). The problems faced by the fish farmers were broadly categorized as financial, natural, technical and social. Therefore, necessary training facilities with institutional and organizational supports, credit facilities, extension services and awareness development are essential to improve aquaculture system as well as the fishers’ livelihoods in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district.Res. A comparative technical and economic analysis of two communitybased seasonal floodplains (Khirai and Angrail) of Daudkandi Upazila, Comilla during 2008 to 2010, are represented in this paper. The two floodplains differed mainly in management and fish production which were related to capital investment, variable cost, share of profits and proportional reimbursement to the fishers. Local management committees have been developed in each floodplain with significant differences. Average 142 kg/ha of fish fingerlings (carps such as Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus cirrhosus, Labeo calbasu, Labeo bata and exotic species such as Hypopthalmicthys molitrix, Aristichthys nobilis, Cyprinus carpio, Ctenopharyngodon idella, Pungasius hypophthalmus, Barbonymus gonionotus, Oreochromis niloticus) were stocked at the varying proportions. Fish production obtained were 2.8 to 4.4 mt/ha and 1.1 to 1.3 mt/ha in Khirai and Angrail floodplain, respectively. The average cost of fish production, total income and the net income have been estimated as Tk. 209650 ± 54167.12/ha, Tk. 281306 ± 88263.42/ha and Tk. 71656 ± 35152.51/ha in Khirai floodplain and Tk. 62349 ± 5768.90/ha, Tk. 111930 ± 12711.02/ha and Tk. 49580 ± 6948.26/ha in Angrail floodplain, respectively. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) has been recorded as 1.33 and 1.79 in Khirai and Angrail floodplain, respectively. Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food-producing sector in the World and has exhibited continuous improving in total production throughout the recent decades. A carp polyculture experiment was carried out to evaluate the growth performance of major carps in semi-intensive fish culture system. Two earthen ponds located at Kadirganj of Boalia thana under Rajshahi district of Bangladesh were selected to study the effect of fertilizer (organic as cowdung and in-organic as triple super phosphate) in supplemented ponds on the growth of carps. Pond -01 was fertilized with cowdung and TSP at the rate of 1728 and 20 kg/h respectively, at 10-day intervals. Pond -02 was without fertilizer. Each pond was stocked with 30% Labeo rohita, 20% Catla catla, 15% Cirrhinus mrigala, 15% Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, and 20% Cyprinus carpio with a total stocking density of 10000/ha. Both ponds were supplemented with mustard oil cake, rice bran and maize bran at the rate of 2.5 kg/ha for each, given for a period of six months as daily basis. The net fish production was found to be 2605 and 1795 kg/ha/year in pond -01 and pond -02, respectively. The results showed that fish production was significantly higher in pond -01 than pond -02 (P<0.05). Pond -01 showed 1.45 times greater fish production than that of pond -02. The results of this study provided invaluable information for the sustainable aquaculture, as well as providing an important baseline for future studies within Bangladesh and surrounding developing countries.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/on.v9i1.5727

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the production performance of freshwater mud eel (Monopterus cuchia) with supplementary feed for a period of 5 months in field level. Two ponds were selected for this experiment in Maulovibazar district. Baby cuchia having weight of 50-70 g were stocked in ponds at a stocking density of 10/m2 in filter net. Liming (CaO) was done in all the ponds at rate of 250 kg/ha. A safety shelter for cuchia was developed by installing bamboo root, plastic and bamboo-made hollow pipe, aquatic vegetation and necessary objects in the pond. Different physico-chemical parameters were found to be within the acceptable ranges for M. cuchia culture in all ponds. Supplementary feed composed of fish paste (50%), fish meal (40%), rice bran (5%) and wheat flour (5%) was applied at the rate of 2-3% of body weight. After 5 months of rearing, total production obtained were 28.3±1.09 and 31.9±2.56 kg from pond-1 and pond-2, respectively. The highest production was obtained from pond-2 and lowest production was obtained in pond-1. The net profit gained from pond-1 and pond-2 were tk 2559 and 3211 per decimal, respectively.

The study was conducted on the fish farmer, which was situated at Chaugachha Upazila, Jashore, from October 2015 to April 2016. Data were collected using participatory rural appraisal (PRA) tools and personal observation. About 62% of the farmers have ponds of single, and 38% have multiple ownership. The homestead and commercial ponds were 79% and 21%, respectively. About 100% farmer carried out poly-culture fish farming though they did not know poly-culture just culture of various fishes. About 98% of the farmers control aquatic weeds manually. For controlling undesirable species, most of them (95.74%) used the netting method. Liming used 185. 3-247 kg/ha and organic fertilizer, mainly cow dung used 741-1235 kg/ha. Average stocking density was found to be 12326 fry/ha. 91.5% of the farmers applied supplementary feed, such as both rice-bran and mustard oil-cake. The peak harvesting period was found from December to January. In this season, around 65% of the stocked fishes were reported to harvest, and the rest of the fish (35%) was harvested during another season.

Saprolegniosis is a mycological disease that causes significant economic losses in fish culture and can be considered an obstacle to the development of world fish farming. Thus, we aimed to identify which species of fish cultivated in the world have been associated with fungi of the genus Saprolegnia. The research deals with a bibliographical survey that contemplates articles published between 2007 and July of 2017. We found a relationship of saprolegniose with fish species: Oncorhynchus mykiss, Salmo trutta, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, Labeo rohita, Pterophyllum scalare, Ctenopharyngodon idella, Sander lucioperca, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, Oreochromis niloticus, Odonthestes bonariensis, Odonthestes humensi e Catla catla. The oomycetes found were: Saprolegnia ferax, Saprolegnia parasitica, Saprolegnia australis, Saprolegnia diclina, Saprolegnia delica, Saprolegnia glomerata, Saprolegnia terrestres, Saprolegnia uliginosa, Saprolegnia unispora, Saprolegnia hypogyna and Saprolegnia longicaulis. The species S. ferax and S. parasitica were the fungi that presented the highest infection register, mainly in salmonids. O. mykiss, S. salar and S. trout were the fish with more studies related to saprolegniose, because they are species that have great market importance in the world fish farming scenario. Despite the great importance of the species O. niloticus in the world fish culture, we observed the specie in only one article in this research, which may be related to the high resistance of the species to diseases and to the lack of research funding to identify this type of infection. It was not possible to compare the host - etiological agent among the fish, since many of the studies considered in the research did not have the purpose of identifying the pathogen.

To evaluate the effect of nutrients enriched feed premix on the growth performance of major carps Rohu (Labeo rohita), Catla (Catla catla) and Mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) in a polyculture system, the present experiment was carried out in six earthen ponds located at Khulna University of Bangladesh for a period of 90 days. Two treatments each with three replications were stocked with 40% Rohu, 30% Catla and 30% Mrigal with a total stocking density of 10000/ha. T-2 was treated with feed premix at the rate of 4g/1 kg feed while T-1 was not treated with any feed premix. Both treatments were applied normal feed twice a day at the rate of 2% to 4% of the body weight of the fingerlings. The net fish production was found to be 2238.06 kg/ha and 3607.33 kg/ha in T-1 and T-2 respectively. The results showed that fish production was significantly higher in T-2 than T-1 (P<0.05). The potential and prospect of fish farming of Sreemangal, Moulvibazar was carried out from January to December 2015 by interviewing of 90 fish farmers with a well-structured questionnaire. The survey revealed that 40% of the ponds were seasonal and 60% perennial, of which 85% with single ownership and 15% accompanied by multiple ownership. The average pond size was 0.13 ha and depth 2.6 m. The ponds were prepared using of lime, cow dung, urea and TSP at the rate of 250, 250, 40 and 20 kg/ha, respectively. Nearly all of the farmers practiced polyculture with Indian major carps and exotic carps. Fish was stocked from March to June and average stocking density was 15,500 fingerlings/ha. To sustain natural food production, farmers generally used cow dung, urea and TSP at the rate of 2,600, 300 and 150 kg/ha/yr, respectively. Healthy environmental condition was maintained by applying lime and salt at 600 and 60 kg/ha/yr, respectively. The fish were fed by supplementary feed (45% farm) e.g., rice bran and mustard oil-cake with an average quantity of 2,200 and 550 kg/ha/yr, respectively and artificial pellet feed (55% farm). The average fish production, production cost and profit were found 2,945 kg/ha/yr, 1,25,940 and 94,935 Tk./ha/yr, respectively. The major constraints for sustainable pond fish farming were non-availability of fish fingerlings during stocking period, insufficient water in dry season, high production cost, poor technical knowledge, lack of money etc. By establishing more hatcheries, arranging training at farm level, providing interest free or at lower interest loan to the farmers the existing fish production could be increased.Res.
