Foundation structures are usually exposed to dominant vertical load. However, in some cases there is also significant value of horizontal load caused e.g. by horizontal terrain deformation on areas attached with underground mining or by horizontal deformation of foundation structure due to pre-stressing, creep, shrinkage, and temperature variation. Through the friction between subsoil and foundations, the foundation structure must resist significant normal forces. The idea of sliding joints between subsoil and foundation structure, which eliminates the friction in footing bottom, comes from the 1970’s. The bitumen asphalt belt given rheological properties has been proven as an effective material for sliding joints. In the paper there are test results of shear resistance of currently used asphalt belts. The test results are used for subsoil shear stress analysis in model example of strip foundation. Shear resistance is calculated according to Czech code for designing buildings on undermined area and also using advanced FEM analysis.

This paper reports that isolation rubber bearings were newly installed instead of existing steel bearings as seismic retrofit in a truss portion of the Hitsuishijima viaduct in the Seto-Ohashi Bridges, which is unprecedented method for highway-railway combined bridges in Japan. For the truss bridge, seismic performance evaluation was conducted and it was found that some members were damaged. In order to minimize retrofit work over the railway tracks, the isolation of truss girder was selected. For the truss girder isolation, the constraining effect of the long rail and the running safety of the train were studied. In the retrofit work, in order to minimize the impact on the expressway, railway tracks, and utility facilities, the structural change of the isolation rubber bearings and the displacement of truss girder caused by jacking up had to be studied. The support structure was adopted with a knock-off mechanism, and the effects of jacking up were confirmed by FEM analysis.

Model was developed for the prediction of polarization characteristics in a dielectric material exhibiting piezoelectricity and electrostriction based on mathematical equations and MATLAB computer simulation software. The model was developed based on equations of polarization and piezoelectric constitutive law and the functional coefficient of Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) crystal material used was 2.3×10-6 m (thickness), the model further allows the input of basic material and calculation of parameters of applied voltage levels, applied stress, pressure, dielectric material properties and so on, to generate the polarization curve, strain curve and the expected deformation change in the material length charts. The mathematical model revealed that an application of 5 volts across the terminals of a 2.3×10-6 m thick dielectric material (PZT) predicted a 1.95×10-9 m change in length of the material, which indicates piezoelectric properties. Both polarization and electric field curve as well as strain and voltage curve were also generated and the result revealed a linear proportionality of the compared parameters, indicating a resultant increase in the electric field yields higher polarization of the dielectric materials atmosphere.
