The article contains a comparative analysis of early European interpretations of Goethe’s poem Erlkönig and hypothesizes that it was under their influence that Zhukovsky introduced significant innovations in his translation. Already in the first English translations by M. G. Lewis and W. Scott, translators dispense with the naturphilosophical implication of Goethe’s original and enhance its folkloric dimension; the plot is structured according to the pre-romantic and romantic folk legends of evil and many-voiced forest ‘kings.’ The early French versions embark on a new tradition of ‘translating’ the title into the native language, revealing the semiotics of the image and making it more recognizable by a foreign culture. Zhukovsky’s idea of the Forest King is shaped by his contemporary culture; he integrates the German original not only into Russian demonology as described by Russian lexicons of the early 19th c., but also into the set of translation practices already established at the time when he was writing his ballad.

Bilinguals were documented to access their native or first language (L1) during comprehension of their second languages (L2). However, it is uncertain whether they can access L2 when reading their first language. This study used the event-related potential (ERP) technique to demonstrate the implicit and unconscious access to English words when Chinese–English bilinguals read words in Chinese, their native language. The participants were asked to judge whether the Chinese words presented in pairs were semantically related or not, meanwhile unconscious of the occasional alliteration (repetition of the first phoneme) if the Chinese words were translated into English. While the concealed prime in English translations failed to affect the reaction time, the alliteration significantly modulated N400 among advanced English learners, especially for semantically unrelated word pairs. Critically, this modulation effect was discrepant between bilinguals with high-level and normal-level English proficiency. These results indicate that L2 activation is an unconscious correlate of native-language processing depending on L2 proficiency.

Bilingualism imposes costs to language processing but benefits to word learning. We test a new hypothesis that relates costs in language processing at study to benefits in learning at test as desirable difficulties. While previous studies have taught vocabulary via bilinguals’ native language (L1), recent evidence suggests that bilinguals acquire regulatory skill in the L1 to coordinate the use of each language. We hypothesized that L1 regulation underlies the observed costs and benefits, with word learning advantages depending on learning via the L1. Four groups learned novel Dutch words via English translations: English monolinguals, and English–Spanish, Spanish–English, and Chinese–English bilinguals. Only English–Spanish bilinguals demonstrated a word learning advantage, but they adopted a costly study strategy compared to monolinguals. The results suggest that bilingual advantages in vocabulary learning depend on learning via the L1 or dominant language because learning via the L1 allows bilinguals to engage regulatory skills that benefit learning.

An intensive abrasion of the coast of the most popular Lithuanian Palanga health‐resort necessitates consideration of the most effective ways of its stabilization. Based on the data of field investigations and literary sources, the possibilities of Palanga coastal zone regeneration using the sand dredged from the entrance channel of Klaipeda port are considered. Based on the current geodynamic trends of Palanga coastal zone and results obtained by comparative analysis of granulometric composition of sediments dredged from the entrance channel of Klaipeda Port, the optimal possibilities of using the dredged sand for coast regeneration were determined. It was established that formation of underwater sandbar (analogue of natural bar) in the surf zone of coastal sector between the Palanga Pier and Birute Mount at a depth of 3 m would be the best solution for coast regeneration under the current conditions. Santrauka Intensyvi populiariausio Lietuvoje Palangos kurorto jūros kranto arda verčia ieškoti efektyviu kranto stabilizavimo metodu. Pastaruoju metu (2003–2008 m.) atlikti apsauginio paplūdimio kopagūbrio tvirtinimo bei paplūdimio sanašu atsargu papildymo Palangos rekreacineje zonoje darbai leme tik trumpalaiki kranto apsaugos efekta. Straipsnyje, remiantis natūriniu tyrimu bei literatūros duomenimis, ivertintos smelio, iškasamo iš Klaipedos iplaukos kanalo, naudojimo Palangos kranto zonai regeneruoti galimybes. Atsižvelgus i dabartines Palangos kranto zonos geodinamines tendencijas bei atlikus šio ruožo ir iškasamo iš Klaipedos uosto iplaukos kanalo biriu sanašu sudeties lyginamaja analize, nustatytos optimalios iškasamo smelio panaudojimo kranto zonai regeneruoti galimybes. Esant dabartinei situacijai efektyviausias kranto zonos regeneravimo būdas ‐ povandeninio volo (gamtinio sekliaus analogo) 3 m gylyje kranto ruožo tarp Palangos tilto ir Birutes kalno gožos zonoje formavimas.

The secret places of the native language is a powerful instrument of the Ukrainian state builder. According to Oleksandr Potebnia, the link between languages and ideas, between languages and the associative ideas as well as the culture of a people generates the striving toward a societal unification according to the feature of national identity. In the 19th century, Ukrainians in the Austrian (since 1867: Austro-Hungarian) and in the Russian Empires felt their closeness not only due to similar living conditions, but first and foremost due to their common native language, the language of their reasoning. They strove for unification while they found themselves in different state formations, as is reflected in literary sources as well as in the language of historical and scholarly sources written by eminent Ukrainian intellectuals. In this article, we attempt to demonstrate that this is also true for Ivan Franko’s texts, and we highlight his role for the process of the unification of all parts of Ukraine. Franko was a leading Ukrainian thinker who worked as a writer, journalist and editor of periodicals. He was also a talented organizer of cultural and educational societies, and he was active in politics. The liberation and the unification of the Ukrainian people was an essential part of his program in all these spheres. His ideas exerted great impact on Galician intellectuals and had a genuine effect on the unification of Ukraine and, particularly, on the «Act zluky» (the «Unification Act») of 22 January 1919.

This paper examines certain discrepancies between the German originals and the English translations of three Holocaust-related works by W. G. Sebald: The Emigrants, The Rings of Saturn, and Vertigo. The process of Anglicization is shown to involve tonal transformations. Attention is also drawn to variations in the use of the textually embedded illustrations that form such a distinctive feature of Sebald's narrative strategy, for example the omission from The Emigrants of a chalk drawing by the refugee artist Frank Auerbach that was featured in the German original, Die Ausgewanderten. This raises further questions about an aesthetic of hybridity that not only combines words with images, but transforms real-life originals into quasi-fictional characters.

In literary criticism, structural and semantic correspondences are established between the author and the reader as elements of aesthetic reality. As a result, another text appears before us, different from the original one. With each new reading, a new edition of the text will appear. In this regard, the question of determining the subjective and objective factors of the reception process becomes important. The tasks set determined the need to refer to a comparative analysis of the poems of Russian and Tatar poets, during which the regularities of the functioning of new meanings emerging in interliterary dialogues are considered. Comparative, hermeneutic and receptive methods of analysis were used in solving the set tasks. As a result of the study, the similarities and differences between the works of V. Bryusov and G. Tukai, dedicated to the topic of the native language, were established, and the peculiarities of perception of the additions of foreign literature by bilingual readers were also identified. The results obtained are significant in the study of the role of the reader as a subject of interliterary dialogues.

The article is a comparative analysis of the modernist aesthetics of creation. It describes how Rilke and Georg Simmel discovered August Rodin’s rules of modern perception, sensitivity and creative imagination. In the work of both writers we see them striving to interpret works of art as a creative process that is the effect of their astute diagnosis of contemporary culture. A new approach to aisthesis restores value to aesthetic experience and opens up broader learning opportunities.
