ABSTRACT Peanut is an important oilseed crop and legume species, with more than 1.9 M tons produced annually in the U.S. Being indeterminate, peanut continually flowers and sets pods throughout the growing season, leading to the potential harvest of both mature and immature pods. To quantify the physiological impacts of peanut seed maturity, a two-year field study was conducted to elucidate the difference in canopy structure and reproductive characteristics, including flower production, yield, and grade between seed obtained from immature and mature seed of two commercial peanut cultivars: TUFRunner™ ‘727’ and FloRun™ ‘107’. Data indicated that seed from the yellow class of pods have lower vigor and overall plant development and performance; further, plants developed from immature seed never achieved a level of performance comparable to that of the mature brown/black pod classes. There were differences between cultivars in the severity of the impact of immaturity, with larger detrimental effects on immature TUFRunner™ ‘727’, which exhibited reduced emergence. Despite these cultivar differences, this study illustrated that mature seed performs better in a field setting than immature seed. These results are critically important to disproving the ‘catch-up' assumption: seed maturity not only has an impact on emergence, but on subsequent life history and performance traits through the remainder of the season.

This paper investigates the impact of having open 400 meter (400 m) runners on NCAA relay teams. Using data from 2012–2016 containing the top 100 4 × 400 m in each NCAA Division relay times for each year, it is found that more 400 m specialists lead to an increase in the overall performance of the team, measured by a decrease in relay times. The effect is examined across Division I–III NCAA track teams. The results are consistent across each division. We view this as a test of the role of specialization on performance. Using runners who specialize in 400 m races should increase overall team performance as long as specialization does not lead to an inefficient allocation of team human capital. An additional performance measure is used examining the difference between projected and actual relay times. Divisions I and II are found to perform better than projected with an increase in 400 m runners, but there is no effect found in Division III.

Introduction and Objective: Malaria is considered one of the most important parasitic diseases in Iran. With regard to malaria, Sistan and Baluchestan province ranks first among the country's provinces. This study set out in 2017 to investigate the impact of education on malaria knowledge, attitude and behavior among health workers working in Saravan city health center. Materials and Methods: The present study is a semi-experimental study of before and after clinical trial type that was performed on 73 health workers in Saravan city. A researcher-made questionnaire was used to collect the required data. It consisted of two parts: the first part was dedicated to demographic data and the second part was about the knowledge, attitude and performance of health workers regarding malaria. The face and content validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by an expert panel. The reliability of the questionnaire was calculated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient (α=0.85). Before the start of the training, the questionnaires were given to the health workers. The trainings were presented in 49 one-hour sessions by the experts of the headquarters of Saravan Health Center in Behvarzi Center using lectures and pamphlets. One month after the training, the same questionnaires were filled in by health workers. The difference between the variables of knowledge, attitude and performance in the two groups before and after the intervention was performed using a one-sample and paired sample t-test or their non-parametric equivalent i.e. Binominal and Wilcoxon tests in the SPSS software (version 18). A significance level of 0.5 was taken into consideration. Results: The results showed that the mean scores of health workers in the areas of knowledge, attitude and performance increased significantly after the workshop (p=0.001) so that the participants' knowledge score increased from 26.06 to 56.7. In terms of attitude, their score increased from 7.2 to 17.7, and in terms of performance, participants' score increased from 13 to 32. Discussion and Conclusions: The findings revealed that the implementation of educational programs in the field of malaria can increase the level of knowledge, attitude and performance of the community regarding the preventive behaviors of malaria. Therefore, health system officials are recommended to work toward the amelioration of the knowledge, attitude and performance of the health workers. Keywords: knowledge, attitude, performance, health workers, malaria, retrainin

Simulations of UV disinfection systems require accurate models of UV radiation within the reactor. Processes such as reflection and refraction at surfaces within the reactor can impact the intensity of the simulated radiation field, which in turn impacts the simulated dose and performance of the UV reactor. This paper describes a detailed discrete ordinates radiation model and comparisons to a test that recorded the UV radiation distribution around a low pressure UV lamp in a water-filled chamber with a UV transmittance of 88%. The effects of reflection and refraction at the quartz sleeve were investigated, along with the impact of wall reflection from the interior surfaces of the chamber. Results showed that the inclusion of wall reflection improved matches between predicted and measured values of incident radiation throughout the chamber. The difference between simulations with and without reflection ranged from several percent near the lamp to nearly 40% further away from the lamp. Neglecting reflection and refraction at the quartz sleeve increased the simulated radiation near the lamp and reduced the simulated radiation further away from the lamp. However, the distribution and trends in the simulated radiation field both with and without the effects of reflection and refraction at the quartz sleeve were consistent with the measured data distributions.

Introduction: Gender differences, which are socially and culturally created, determine how women and men will perform and the more appropriate activities for each person. As cultural and social aspects emphasize the differences in men’ and women’s roles, culture and gender stereotypes may influence the difference in the probability of success of business headed by men or women. The objective of this article is to explore whether the impact of the determinants of micro-businesses continuity varies between men and women in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, Mexico.Method: We use hierarchical modeling with Bernoulli distribution using the sex of the micro entrepreneur as a variable in the second level. Results: Results indicate that sex moderates the effect of schooling, having the micro-business to exercise his or her career or profession, if the micro-entrepreneur is willing to change the business activity to a job with similar income, but with access to social security, and if the micro-business is in the manufacturing sector.Discussion: Women entrepreneurs can feel disadvantaged as entrepreneurs or make choices that emphasize traditional gender roles. As a consequence, the social and cultural restrictions faced by women restrict their participation and performance in the business world.

<p>Seed  maturity  and its storage are one of problems  on  propagation and developing of medicinal   plants such as sambiloto (<em>Andrographis paniculata </em>(Burm.f.) ex Nees). The research  aimed  to determine effects of seed maturity and storage duration on seed germination of  sambiloto was conducted in a green house of  Purwodadi Botanical Garden from  November 2014 to November 2015.  The experiment done by completely randomised design  with two  treatments  namely seed  maturity  and  storage duration. The seed was classified into immature seed (0.061 g/100 seeds), semimature seed (0.113 g/100 seeds) and mature seed (0.166 g/100 seeds). The seed’s  storage duration was classified into seed was not stored, seed was stored  for six months and seed was stored for  twelve months. Each treatment combination was replicated five times. The results showed that there were significant interactions between the treatments on percentage and rate of seed germination.  The highest percentage of seed germination was the treatment of mature seed and stored twelve months (98.50%). On the contrast, the lowest seed germination percentage was the treatment of immature seed and stored twelve months (4.25 %). The fastest seed  germination rate was the treatment of mature seed and stored  six months (3.88 days), whereas the slowest seed germination rate was the treatment of immature  seed and without  stored (28.58 days). This study is expected to be applied to improve genetic and cultivation of medicinal plant as well as increasing plant growth and yield.</p>

This explanatory sequential mixed methods study explores the perceptions of academic and administrative managers responsible for teacher training at a public university in Colombia, as well as their views on improving such training after learning about the performance of teachers student teachers in the 2019 Saber Pro test, the differences in their test scores, and the relationships and statistical correlations between these outcomes and the students’ personal, family, socioeconomic and academic characteristics. Our findings show significant differences in the student teachers’ mean scores and performance when data are grouped according to personal, socioeconomic and academic conditions; a significant relationship between performance and student teacher characteristics; and correlations between critical reading scores and the other competencies assessed. Our data also highlight the lack of knowledge among academic and administrative managers about students’ life circumstances and the diversity of factors that may impact their performance; the importance of correlational data; the difference between expected and true outcomes; the inequity under which students seem to pursue their education; the limitations in access to resources; the training required for teachers to be able to analyze quantitative data and use specific software; the impact of teachers’ critical reading skills on student outcomes; the importance of data-driven decision-making; and the need for teachers to engage in quantitative research practices.

The difference (D) between a person's Verbal IQ (VIQ) and Performance IQ (PIQ) has for some time been considered clinically meaningful ( Kaufman, 1976 , 1979 ; Matarazzo, 1990 , 1991 ; Matarazzo & Herman, 1985 ; Sattler, 1982 ; Wechsler, 1984 ). Particularly useful is information about the degree to which a difference (D) between scores is “abnormal” (i.e., deviant in a standardization group) as opposed to simply “reliable” (i.e., indicative of a true score difference) ( Mittenberg, Thompson, & Schwartz, 1991 ; Silverstein, 1981 ; Payne & Jones, 1957 ). Payne and Jones (1957) proposed a formula to identify “abnormal” differences, which has been used extensively in the literature, and which has generally yielded good approximations to empirically determined “abnormal” differences ( Silverstein, 1985 ; Matarazzo & Herman, 1985 ). However applications of this formula have not taken into account the dependence (demonstrated by Kaufman, 1976 , 1979 , and Matarazzo & Herman, 1985 ) of Ds on Full Scale IQs (FSIQs). This has led to overestimation of “abnormality” of Ds of high FSIQ children, and underestimation of “abnormality” of Ds of low FSIQ children. This article presents a formula for identification of abnormal WISC-R Ds, which overcomes these problems, by explicitly taking into account the dependence of Ds on FSIQs.
