Abstract In this article, the effect of regular sport activities on the problem-solving approaches performed by high school students when they encountered said problem was analyzed. Six hundred male high school students participated in the study (Mage=15.45 years, age range: 14-17 years). The Problem-Solving Inventory (PSI) was used to evaluate students’ problem-solving solutions. Student-athletes were selected from the students who took charge in school teams, exercised for 6 days a week, provided that this exercise did not exceed 1 h 30 min, and who also participated in competitions. Mann-Whitney U test, which is nonparametrictest, was used to examine two samples (athlete, & non-athlete) and Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis was used to make intergroup (branches of sport) examinations. According to the findings that were obtained, a significant difference was found among selfconfident approach values of athlete and non-athlete students (U=45.0, p=0.008). A significant difference was observed among assessor approach values of athlete and non-athlete students (U=46.2, p=0.033). The students who did sports regularly were more self-confident than those who did not do sports regularly and were of the same age when they encountered a problem, and student-athletes evaluated the phase of solving the problem and results that they obtained more carefully than those who did not do sport regularly and were of the same age. Student-athletes believed that they would solve the problem that they encountered. Further, student athletes preferred using a systematic method while solving a problem and making a decision more often than those who were not athletes and were of the same age.

The ability to visually manipulate problem quantities is often the key to understand effectively the concept towards proper solution process. Modeling blocks in a problem text is a visual mathematical technique that utilizes bar models to express relationship between known and unknown numerical elements. Facing a dismal performance among students entering high school with poor basic problem-solving skills, this study is an attempt to investigate how block model approach potentially reinforce students’ heuristic skills (analytical & procedural) in solving mathematical problems. Two classes of grade 7 students in Ibarra National High School, Maasin City, Philippines were used as participants which is assigned into groups, that is, control and experimental groups. Control group was taught using conventional method while the experimental group was taught using the concept of block model. Using quasi-experimental design, the data analysis revealed significant increase in scores and significant mean difference in problem-solving skills between groups who used and did not use block model method. In conclusion, utilization of block models gives high potential in developing strategic problem-solving ability of learners. Hence, this approach should be incorporated by mathematics teachers in their teaching strategies.

The study investigated the effects of kumon teaching strategy methods on students’ achievement in electrical/electronic in technical colleges in Niger State. The study adopted a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control group. The sample for the study consisted of 122 technical college III electrical/electronic students. Purposive sampling was used to select four schools in Minna education zone. The instrument used for the study is the Electrical/Electronic Achievement Test (EAT) designed by the researcher. Section A of the instrument contained 20 multiple-choice items, section B contained 2 essay questions all for the measurement of students’ achievement in electrical/electronic. Four research questions and four hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation and ANCOVA statistical tools. The results showed that ability level of students significantly influence achievement in electrical/electronic. The high ability students outperformed their medium and low ability students. Gender was not a significant factor. The interaction effect of gender and method was not statistically significant. There was a significant difference in the mean achievement scores of students taught electrical/electronic using problem-solving and those taught using discussion teaching methods. Finally it was recommended that teachers of electrical/electronic should adopt the use of kumon teaching strategy. This will go a long way in improving problem-solving skills of students no matter their ability level.
