The purpose of the article is to study, analyze and consider general problems and prospects of using ontologies when modelling decision-making processes in intelligent systems when analyzing the risks of the innovation and investment sphere. The research methodology lies in methods of the basic concepts semantic analysis of a given subject area (innovation and investment projects and management processes for the implementation of these projects). The article discusses the existing approaches to modelling decision-making processes in the analysis of risks in the innovation and investment sphere. The novelty of the research is the intellectualization problems solving of processes in the innovation and investment sphere on the basis of formal ontological models. Conclusions. The practical value of the presented results lies in the development and use of knowledge management system components for identifying and predicting problem situations in innovation and investment projects. The proposed integrated ontology can be used in the management of innovation and investment projects in various subject areas since it contains classes of concepts that have the status of a project activity standard. The developed ontological model makes it possible to develop software architecture for an intelligent decision support system, develop metadata and build a set of interrelated thesauri to support the semantics of end-user requests.

The purpose of the article is to investigate and consider the general trends, problems and prospects of designing and using linguistic ontologies in educational intellectual systems. The research methodology consists in semantic analysis methods of the basic concepts in the considered subject area (linguistic ontologies in the educational intellectual systems). The article discusses approaches to the use of linguistic models in modern educational intelligent systems. The novelty of the research is the analysis of the linguistic ontologies use in the educational intellectual systems. Conclusions. A model of linguistic ontology for the domain (disciplines “Computer Networks” and “Modelling Systems”) is presented. This model is used in the development of an educational intellectual system that supports online learning in these disciplines. The proposed model describes a set of relations of linguistic ontology, specially selected to describe the analyzed domain. To ensure these properties, it was proposed to use a small set of relationships. The proposed linguistic ontological model is implemented in an educational intelligent system that supports such disciplines as “Computer Networks” and “Modelling Systems”.

Background: Midwifery is the backbone of women and child healthcare. The shortage of staff in maternity units is a crisis faced by many countries worldwide, including South Africa.Objectives: This study aims to explore the perceptions of midwives on the shortage and retention of staff at a public institution.Method: The study was conducted at one of the tertiary hospitals in Tshwane District, Gauteng Province. A total of 11 midwives were interviewed through face-to-face and focus group interviews. An explorative, descriptive generic qualitative design method was followed, and a non-probability, purposive sampling technique was used. Thematic coding analysis was followed for analysing data.Results: The impact of shortage of midwives was reported to be directly related to poor provision of quality care as a result of increased workload, leading to low morale and burnout. The compromised autonomy of midwives in the high obstetrics dependency units devalues the status of midwives.Conclusion: Midwives are passionate about their job, despite the hurdles related to their day-to-day work environment. They are demoralised by chronic shortage of staff and feel overworked. Staff involvement in decision-making processes is a motivational factor for midwives to stay in the profession. The midwives need to be in the centre of the decision-making processes related to their profession. The revision of the scope of practice and classification of midwifery profession away from general nursing complex by the South African Nursing Council (SANC) could place midwifery in its rightful status.

In this chapter, the authors present the results of the development the text-mining methodology for increasing the reliability of the functioning of Socio-technical System (STS). Taking into account revealed strengths and weaknesses of Discriminant and Probabilistic approaches of Latent Semantic Relations analysis in of the abstracting and summarization projection, the Methodology of Two-level Single Document Summarization was developed. The Methodology assumes the following elements of novelty: based on obtaining a multi-level topical framework of the document (abstracting); uses the synergy effect of consistent usage the combination of two approaches for identification of conceptually significant elements of the text (summarization). The examples demonstrating the basic workability of proposed Methodology were presented. Such approaches should help human to increase the quality of supporting the decision-making processes of STS in real time.

The main research activities in economics during the last five years have significantly increased. The main research fields are operation research and sustainable development. The philosophy of decision making in economics is to assess and select the most preferable solution, implement it and to gain the biggest profit. Preferences are used in a lot of problem situations both in individual and organizational decision making processes. A number of effective decision making methods that support decisions under conditions of multiple criteria have appeared in the last decade. This paper presents a panorama of decision making methods in economics and summarizes the most important results and applications over the last five years. This paper considers decision making in light of the recent developments of multiple criteria decision making methods (because classical methods are overviewed in a lot of earlier publications). Authors of different approaches, pioneering studies and works are presented in short. Sprendimus gali parinkti tiek atskiri veikėjai tiek ir veikėjų grupės. Vertinamų sprendimų pasekmės įtakoja tiek sprendėjų tiek ir visuomenės poreikius. Šiame straipsnyje pateikiama sprendimų priėmimo metodų, kuriuos galima taikyti ekonomikoje, apžvalga. Straipnyje pateikiama paskutinių penkerių metų svarbiausių tyrimų apžvalga. Taip pat pristatyti populiariausių daugiatikslių sprendimų priėmimo metodų, kurie taikomi ir kuriuos galima taikyti priimant sprendimus ekonomikoje, autoriai.

Abstract: This article aims to critically engage with Odin Teatret’s most recent addition to the repertoire, The Tree (2016), in order to investigate the ways in which Barba’s dramaturgical decision-making processes create a performance field that metaphorically comments on the status of the group today whilst critiquing contemporary geo-politics. Importantly, we argue that notions of interculturalism - which have often been employed by scholars to critique the Odin’s work - do not address the full complexity of the embodied concatenation of the group’s practice, and we employ the term interstitial to more effectively articulate the complex space produced by the group’s training and performances.

In spite of their striking diversity, numerous tasks and architectures of intelligent systems such as those permeating multivariable data analysis, decision-making processes along with their underlying models, recommender systems and others exhibit two evident commonalities. They promote (a) human centricity and (b) vigorously engage perceptions (rather than plain numeric entities) in the realization of the systems and their further usage. Information granules play a pivotal role in such settings. Granular Computing delivers a cohesive framework supporting a formation of information granules and facilitating their processing. The author exploits two essential concepts of Granular Computing. The first one deals with the construction of information granules. The second one helps endow constructs of intelligent systems with a much needed conceptual and modeling flexibility. The study elaborates in detail on the three representative studies. In the first study being focused on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) used in decision-making, the author shows how an optimal allocation of granularity helps improve the quality of the solution and facilitate collaborative activities in models of group decision-making. The second study is concerned with a granular interpretation of temporal data where the role of information granularity is profoundly visible when effectively supporting human centric description of relationships existing in data. The third study concerns a formation of granular logic descriptors on a basis of a family of logic descriptors.

The latter includes customizing the user interface, as well as the way the system retrieves and processes cases afterward. The resulting cases may be shown to the user in different ways, and/or the retrieved cases may be adapted. This chapter is about an intelligent model for decision making based on case-based reasoning to solve the existing problem in the planning of distribution in the supply chain between a distribution center and a chain of supermarkets. First, the authors mentioned the need for intelligent systems in the decision-making processes, where they are necessary due to the limitations associated with conventional human decision-making processes. Among them, human experience is very scarce, and humans get tired of the burden of physical or mental work. In addition, human beings forget the crucial details of a problem, and many of the times are inconsistent in their daily decisions.

Abstract The management models pursued in logistics terminals determine their performance to a great extent. Terminals managed by public actors usually incorporate more social criteria into their decision-making processes. In addition, private management focuses on economic viability of the initiative. Decision-making is a complex process regardless the structure of management or the decision models useddue to the fact that a wide range of diverse criteria are embedded into this process. The objective of this paper it to determine a prioritization of a set of alternative options for investment projects which were suggested by port executives taking into account criteria and evaluation that have already validated by them. In order to perform the analysis a multi-criteria decision-making model was used: the Analytic Hierachy Process. The outcomes support a low-biased and efficient strategic planning through a balanced decision-making framework.

Case overview This is a four-part case study in which the case of a company turnaround emerges as the students work through a series of decision-making processes. In teaching the case, the students would only be given Part A to begin with, about which they need to make decisions as to what they would do, as preparation for the first part of the lecture. After that has been discussed, they are provided with the second part which tells them what in fact happened in the situation and leads them to the next decision point, and so on. The case deals with an entrepreneur hearing about a business that has gone insolvent; it then tracks the process from investigating the small manufacturing and sales company through the various stages of its subsequent remarkable turnaround to the point where the protagonist was voted Entrepreneur of the Year in South Africa. It covers the period 2007 to 2012 and includes the annual financial statements. Expected learning outcomes Following are the expected learning outcomes: an understanding of the broad range of management competencies; an understanding of how to turnaround a small organisation; and to experience group-based decision-making. Variance, as a measurement of dispersion, is a basic component of decision-making processes. Recent advances in intelligent systems have included the concept of variance in information fusion techniques for decision-making under uncertainty. These dispersion measures broaden the spectrum of decision makers by extending the toolset for the analysis and modeling of problems. This paper introduces some variance logarithmic averaging operators, including the variance generalized ordered weighted averaging (Var-GOWLA) operator and the induced variance generalized ordered weighted averaging (Var-IGOWLA) operator. Moreover, this paper analyzes some properties, families and particular cases of the proposed operators. Finally, an illustrative example of the characteristic design of the operators is proposed using real-world information retrieved from financial markets. The objective of this paper is to analyze the performance of some equities based on the expected payoff and the dispersion of its elements. Results show that the equity payoff results present diverse rankings combined with the proposed operators, and the introduced variance measures aid decision-making by offering new tools for information analysis. These results are particularly interesting when selecting logarithmic averaging operators for decision-making processes. The approach presented in this paper extends the available tools for decision-making under ignorance, uncertainty, and subjective environments.
