ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH FOR BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION STUDENTS

The importance of needs analysis is fundamental in vocational student learning. Therefore this study aims to identify English language needs for business administration students at Amik. The focus of this study is to find out whether students need to learn English in business administration, lecturer teaching materials for students whether it is in accordance with their skills (majors), references to students' English books are relevant to their needs. To find answers a qualitative approach was mixed with a quantitative approach in mixed methods. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentary studies to check data trust. Data collection methods that refer to language skills, language use, teaching methods and other related issues for needs analysis. The informants of this study were students, lecturers and Amik Dapernas LP3I Padang education management. The results of this study indicate that 1), AMIK students in Dapernas need English skills that will be used in business administration is the ability to read and write. 2), English material used by lecturers does not suit the needs of business administration students, 3) materials and handbooks for business administration students do not fully complement the students' English needs. Based on these findings, it is recommended that an analysis of the English language needs of students to find out the interests, needs and shortcomings of business administration students in English. Then, lecturers and education staff need to conduct evaluations of English language needs of students based on their chosen majors.

<p>This study is conducted to investigate the application of needs analysis in developing EAP materials for business administration students in two Sudanese universities. The subjects are 2 head departments of English language. To collect data, the researcher uses interview and content analysis. The study adopts the descriptive approach. The data of the study is analyzed qualitatively. The findings show that most of the business administration EAP materials in Sudanese universities are not based on needs analysis and are not relevant to the students' learning and target situation needs. The drawbacks in EAP materials, in Sudanese universities, are due to the absence of needs analysis practice in the process of syllabi design. Therefore, the researcher recommends the application of needs analysis in the process of course design to assure designing courses that are relevant to the students' actual needs. The EAP courses which are taught in Sudanese universities should be tailored to the students' specific needs.</p>

A professional English course in business administration studies at the university should lay emphasis on the specific demands and interests of students studying in this programme and requirements of English language knowledge imposed by the business domain. Development of business-related competences in the professional English course is essential for future entrepreneurs who will use English in multiple business contexts to run a successful and competitive business. The aim of the study was to develop and to approbate such business-related competences as business management and personal management in a professional English course in business administration studies. The author of the article emphasizes the idea that the development of business-related competences can be enhanced if the case study method is applied. The results of the study were obtained in a pedagogical experiment involving business administration students in case study modules within a professional English course. Participating in the professional English case study-based course the students developed business related competences comprising business management and personal management and the article describes the process of these competences’ practical acquisition.

This research aims to develop the materials of reading by conducting need analysis in order to meet the needs of business administration students. The method of research was a research and development (R&D) by Borg and Gall which are modified in to three main cycles, namely: evaluation and needs assessment, materials development, and materials validation. The study found that the existing materials of reading II are not match with the needs analysis result. Thus, the researcher added 13 more basic competencies of the syllabus and materials of reading related to the learners needs and learning needs. The aim of this study was to know the effectiveness of the use of alphabet cards game as interesting tool to explain vocabularies and it make it easier to remember their meanings. This study belongs to the quasi experimental research and presents pre-test, post test and to investigate the effect of using alphabet cards game on vocabulary mastery of commercial business administration students. The participants were the students from commercial business administration students at the third semester (N=54) of State Polytechnic Bengkalis and divided into two groups. Both groups were taught vocabulary, however, the experimental group students who are exposed to alphabet cards game and the controlled group students who received conventional method. Pre-test and post-test were given to both experimental group students and controlled group students. The score of the vocabulary tests were compared through independent sample t-test. The mean value of pre-test of experimental class was 61.35, while the control class was 52.23. After learning using alphabet card games in experimental class the mean value obtained in post-test was 78.85, while in control class was 59.04.  The improved of learning outcomes can be seen from the level of significance was 0.000 and it was lower than t test 0.000<0.05.  It means that the hypothesis null is not accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the score of the students in learning vocabulary between the experimental group and control group was significantly different. The experimental group students who learned vocabulary using alphabet cards game had increased their vocabulary mastery.

This study explores the area of computer apprehension among College of Business Administration students at a Midwestern university. The fear of computer usage has been termed Cyberphobia, Computer Apprehension, Computerphobia, Computer Anxiety, Computer Vertigo and Terminal Anxiety The authors have coined the word: Compustress. A review of the literature revealed that little has been published on this subject A variety of anecdotal data are provided by a number of authors. These brief data are explored. It was noted that business students may experience terminal shock when they are appraised of the widespread use of computers in their field. Data were collected from College of Business Administration majors on level of computer apprehension, number of hours of computer usage and number of hours of computer training. Results indicate that the higher the number of hours of computer usage and training, the lower the compute apprehension.

Needs analysis is generally believed to be important in an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) context because it enables practitioners and material writers to find out about their learners’ needs. Thus, the main research question focuses on the perceived English language needs of the learners at Prince Sultan Air Base (PSAB), and the study involves an investigation into the mismatch between the Cutting Edge course book and the needs of PSAB students. A total of 70 students from different technical sections at Prince Sultan Air Base (PSAB), Saudi Arabia participated in the study. Two types of data collection methods were used in this study: quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (interviews). The results obtained reveal that the current course book being used at PSAB does not meet their needs because the activities provided are not relevant to the specific context of their field, which is mainly military and aviation. Finding and adapting a textbook that is clearly linked to these students’ needs and to the course objectives is suggested as one possible solution. In the context of PSAB, data from the interviews and surveys shows the need to assess the content of the course book in relation to the needs of the learners. It also indicates the strong demand of the students for supplementary materials that provide linguistic input to match their needs. Finally, offering supplementary materials and content-based instructions for those students would help to bridge the gap between language training and practical performance needs in real situations.
