It is proposed that both human creativity and human consciousness are (unintended) consequences of the human brain’s extraordinary energy efficiency. The topics of creativity and consciousness are treated separately, though have a common sub-structure. It is argued that creativity arises from a synergy between two cognitive modes of the human brain (which broadly coincide with Kahneman’s Systems 1 and 2). In the first, available energy is spread across a relatively large network of neurons, many of which are small enough to be susceptible to thermal (ultimately quantum decoherent) noise. In the second, available energy is focussed on a smaller subset of larger neurons whose action is deterministic. Possible implications for creative computing in silicon are discussed. Starting with a discussion of the concept of free will, the notion of consciousness is defined in terms of an awareness of what are perceived to be nearby counterfactual worlds in state space. It is argued that such awareness arises from an interplay between memories on the one hand, and quantum physical mechanisms (where, unlike in classical physics, nearby counterfactual worlds play an indispensable dynamical role) in the ion channels of neural networks, on the other. As with the brain’s susceptibility to noise, it is argued that in situations where quantum physics plays a role in the brain, it does so for reasons of energy efficiency. As an illustration of this definition of consciousness, a novel proposal is outlined as to why quantum entanglement appears to be so counter-intuitive.

Since the Jones polynomial was discovered, the connection between knot theory and quantum physics has been of great interest. Lomonaco and Kauffman introduced the knot mosaic system to give a definition of the quantum knot system that is intended to represent an actual physical quantum system. Recently the authors developed an algorithm producing the exact enumeration of knot mosaics, which uses a recursion formula of state matrices. As a sequel to this research program, we similarly define the (embedded) graph mosaic system by using 16 graph mosaic tiles, representing graph diagrams with vertices of valence 3 and 4. We extend the algorithm to produce the exact number of all graph mosaics. The magnified state matrix that is an extension of the state matrix is mainly used.

Categorical quantum mechanics exploits the dagger compact closed structure of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces, and uses the graphical calculus of string diagrams to facilitate reasoning about finite dimensional processes. A significant portion of quantum physics, however, involves reasoning about infinite dimensional processes, and it is well-known that the category of all Hilbert spaces is not compact closed. Thus, a limitation of using dagger compact closed categories is that one cannot directly accommodate reasoning about infinite dimensional processes. A natural categorical generalization of compact closed categories, in which infinite dimensional spaces can be modelled, is *-autonomous categories and, more generally, linearly distributive categories. This article starts the development of this direction of generalizing categorical quantum mechanics. An important first step is to establish the behaviour of the dagger in these more general settings. Thus, these notes simultaneously develop the categorical semantics of multiplicative dagger linear logic. The notes end with the definition of a mixed unitary category. It is this structure which is subsequently used to extend the key features of categorical quantum mechanics.

The concept of relapse, enshrined in the Russian criminal law, is subjected to scientific understanding and critical analysis. The characteristic of the essential signs of legal relapse is given, the opinions of various authors about their content are given. The conclusion is made about the desire of the legislator to narrow the scope of legal relapse. The definition of legal relapse has been formulated. The approaches to the study of criminological relapse, its correlation with criminal law relapse are noted, the essence and features of the study of relapse in criminology are determined. The analysis of the statistics of convicts, who at the time of conviction had removed and outstanding convictions and convicts who were found to have committed crimes in case of recidivism, were carried out. The data of official statistics of crime and convictions were compared, conclusions were drawn about the ratio of the proportion of legal and criminological recidivism in them, and conclusions were drawn about the insignificant volume of recidivism in the total aggregate of repeated crimes. Shows the reflection of information about the recidivism of crimes in criminal statistics - the number and proportion of persons who have previously committed crimes, as well as previously convicted. The analysis of the statistics of convicts who at the time of conviction had a removed and outstanding convictions and convicts recognized as having committed crimes upon recidivism was carried out. The data of the official statistics of crime and convictions were compared, conclusions were made about the ratio of the proportion of legal and criminological recidivism in them, and conclusions were drawn about the insignificant volume of recidivism in the total set of repeated crimes.

An introduction to long-term climate-neutral energy makes clear that most arises from the Sun or the motions of the Sun-Earth system. Quantum physics is an essential part of understanding the Sun’s energy source, nuclear fusion. The expected depletion times of oil and other fossil fuels are discussed. The most recent 500,000 years of Earth temperature and sea level are surveyed and shown to correlate closely with carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Sea level and temperature are correlated and move together on time scales of five thousand years. The definition of sustainable energy, the topic of this textbook, is very straightforward. This is the energy that will be available on (after) a timescale set by the earliest benchmarks of our civilization, let us say the timescale of the earliest pyramids or the Chinese Wall, visible from space.

Before the sources and extent of pollution can be identified a definition of pollutants has to be agreed. The degree of disruption of natural cycles in the global ecosystem in terms of residence times and assimilation capacities must be assessed as a prerequisite of any system of control. The sources of man-made and naturally occurring chemicals that fall into this definition can be categorized and these are presented for reference. Specific examples of these categories are discussed in detail, e. g. sulphur dioxide, polychlorinated biphenyls and radioactive waste. Their distribution and dilution in the environment are governed by fluid mixing mechanisms. These can be modelled to allow prediction of effects at specific points taking into account disappearance by decay, chemical reaction and deposition. Reappearance through pathways which involve accumulation and remobilization can only be predicted when a complete scientific understanding of the mechanism has been established.

Although quantum physics has led to the most accurate predictions to date about the nature of matter and the universe, a metaphysical interpretation of its non-deterministic and subjective nature still remains an ongoing debate. In this work, we will review the nature of the debate and propose a new way to address the controversies about the non-deterministic and subjective nature of quantum physics. In our previous work, we have shown that everything is made of information, energy and matter. We propose to define spirit or soul as the content of information, spiritual heart as the receiver of information, and mind as the processor of information. In this paper, we show that the intrinsic uncertain and non-deterministic nature of quantum physics can be explained by the insights from these definitions. Information relates to the possibilities and potentialities of an object. Information is intrinsically uncertain and non-deterministic. Since quantum physics is the fundamental physics theory describing the information, energy and matter of everything, quantum physics has intrinsic an uncertain and non-deterministic nature. We further demonstrate that the process of quantum measurement can be interpreted as the role played by soul, spiritual heart and mind in the manifestation of physical phenomena. We conclude that our insight that everything is made of information, energy and matter and the definition of soul, spiritual heart and mind provides a simple metaphysical interpretation of quantum physics. They can help us understand and resolve the two controversies about quantum physics.

Abstract From the Solvency II perspective, the capital requirement for operational risk is based on the application of a standard formula. The limitation imposed by this approach as well as the definition of operational risk by establishing certain types of activities (i.e. internal processes, people, systems, etc.) as generating causes does not allow, at least for the time being, the establishment of an effective way of managing the operational risk regardless of the type of strategy chosen. Any human operator involved in the risk identification and evaluation processes, within most of the organizations, would use the logic of the included middle based on Boolean binary values (i.e. true/false, 1/0, etc.). This article attempts to logically analyze the methodological impact that would result from using a logic of the included middle which accepts that an identified operational risk and an unidentified operational risk may coexist at the same time, in a risk profile, provided that the identified one is actual and the unidentified one is potential, reciprocal and alternative but never up to the 100% limit. The included middle in this approach is the transition state, which is perfectly possible in terms of defining the topological properties of the time in which the identified operational risks analyzed are assessed. The novelty of this approach is based on the fact that the logic of the included middle, which we include in research as a concept and as a tool, was one of the nudging factors that underpinned the development of the wave mechanics (e.g. Schrodinger’s Cat Paradox) and some of the quantum physics theories later, and its use has never been tested in risk management.

What does it mean to say that something is miraculous, and is it reasonable to form the opinion that such things can happen? The chapter combines human experience and philosophical reflection. It is difficult to formulate a tight definition of miracles, yet we have some pragmatic notion of what we mean by the term. The same can be said of ‘laws of nature’. Attempts to show that it is never reasonable to think that a miracle occurred are themselves faulty. This includes Hume’s argument about human testimony, as well as more recent philosophical attempts. But this does not deflect our intellectual duty to be cautious, to care about truth, to seek scientific understanding, and not be gullible. A miraculous event is out of the ordinary, but not arbitrarily so; it exhibits a larger pattern. Human life involves a combination of complimentary modes of thinking.
