Within the past decade great interest has arisen in the measurement of mental ability. As a result a vast deal of literatures has been written upon this subject. Psychologists have suggested and secured norms for many tests, most of which, or perhaps all of which, are based more or less upon the original Binet-Simon tests. However, this study does not propose either to list or review the history of such mental tests. The one problem of interest, and the problem to which we shall adhere strictly, is to discover the correlation which exists between the Group Test of Mental Ability as worked out and tested by W. H. Pyle of the University of Missouri, and the Individual Tests, otherwise known as The Point Scale Tests as worked out and tested by Robert M. Yerkes, James W. Bridges and Rose S. Hardwick, each of the Psychopathic Hospital, Boston. a thorough explanation of each of these two tests is given in Appendices I and II of this study.

A quarter of a century has now elapsed since the foundation of Toynbee Hall in the east of London inaugurated the “University Settlement” movement in the vast and then almost inchoate capital of the British Empire; and the present time seems therefore appropriate for an attempt to form some estimate of the past results and future possibilities of the movement, which soon spread to other towns of England and Scotland. Yet such an undertaking is beset with serious difficulties. Throughout the whole history of the settlements there is indeed apparent an essential identity of purpose, an underlying uniformity of motive; but the individual institutions have been the outcome of the action of various bodies of persons whose aims, as formally expressed, seem often very diverse; different groups have laid the main emphasis on different objects and methods, and what has been counted as triumphant success by one group has been deemed of relatively small importance by another. Further, the wide range of the activities of the settlements, the multifarious nature of their interests and work, render it practically impossible for any one observer to comprehend the whole in his single survey; and the selection which he must needs make tends almost inevitably to be determined, and it may be even unfairly biassed, by his own personal predilections. Within this narrower range, moreover, there is no certain standard by which to measure success or failure; the value of the work accomplished by a settlement is not to be judged solely, or even chiefly, by the statistics of its classes and clubs. If it has realized its objects, however imperfectly, it has exercised upon the surrounding community, in conjunction with all other institutions that in any way and by any means make for good, a subtle and permeating influence which has resulted in a progressive amelioration of social life; but, for the very reason that this achievement is the result of a number of co-operating forces, the share of the settlement therein cannot be isolated or defined with any exactitude.

Only by holding early printed books can students learn both the strangeness of the past and its oddly familiar struggle with technological innovation. Even partial collections like the one at the University of Victoria have enough rare books to serve these purposes. But how do we teach book culture and intellectual history when we do not have multiple or even representative books from many authors, countries, and sometimes whole decades? We adopt a curatorial teaching model that invites students to find, select, and chart a narrative through the materials that we do have. This article describes our curatorial projects in the hope that others will undertake similar endeavours. It also explains how the very partiality of our collection has generated wonderful opportunities for students to learn not just book history but also the history of Canadian universities, libraries, collectors, and Renaissance studies. C’est seulement en ayant des livres anciens entre les mains que les étudiants peuvent faire l’expérience de l’altérité du passé et de la familiarité des difficultés liées aux innovations technologiques. Même une collection limitée comme celle de la University of Victoria est suffisante pour atteindre ces objectifs. Mais comment peut-on enseigner l’histoire et la culture du livre et l’histoire intellectuelle lorsque nos ressources ne contiennent pas suffisamment de livres ou des livres représentatifs de plusieurs auteurs, pays, voire de décennies ? Nous avons adopté un modèle d’enseignement de la conservation invitant les étudiants à trouver, sélectionner, et élaborer un récit historique à travers les ressources auxquelles nous avons accès. Cet article décrit nos projets de conservation dans l’espoir de susciter d’autres projets similaires. Nous y expliquons aussi comment une collection même très partielle comme la nôtre a donné le jour à d’extraordinaires possibilités d’apprentissage pour les étudiants, non seulement dans le domaine de l’histoire du livre mais aussi en histoire des universités, des bibliothèques, et des collectionneurs canadiens, dans le domaine des études de la Renaissance.

The Tower Mill, Brisbane's oldest extant building, was excavated by the University of Queensland to determine for the Brisbane City Council the heritage potential of surrounding subsurface deposits.  Following the employment of GPR, excavation revealed interesting stratifications, features and artefacts.  Analysis permits an explanation for these deposits which augment an already fascinating history of the site's use over the past 170 years or so.

How was the history of post-classical Rome and of the Church written in the Catholic Reformation? Historical texts composed in Rome at this time have been considered secondary to the city’s significance for the history of art. The Invention of Papal History corrects this distorting emphasis and shows how history-writing became part of a comprehensive formation of the image and self-perception of the papacy. By presenting and fully contextualizing the path-breaking works of the Augustinian historian Onofrio Panvinio (1530–68), this book shows what type of historical research was possible in the late Renaissance and the Catholic Reformation. Historiography in this period by no means consisted entirely of commissioned works written for patrons; rather, a creative interplay existed between, on the one hand, the endeavours of authors to explore the past and, on the other hand, the constraints of patronage and ideology placed on them. This book sheds new light on the changing priorities, mentalities, and cultural standards that flourished in the transition from the Renaissance to the Catholic Reformation.

In recent years, The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade, a difficult work and for long an unjustly neglected one, has begun to command increasingly greater critical attention and esteem. As more than one contemporary writer has noted, the verdict of the late Richard Chase in 1949, that the novel represents Melville's “second best achievement,” has served to prompt many to undertake a second reading (or at least a first) of the book. Before this time, the novel had traditionally been the one Melville readers have shied away from—as overly discursive, too rambling altogether, on the one hand, or as an unfortunate outgrowth of the author's morbidity on the other. Elizabeth Foster, in the admirably comprehensive introduction to her valuable edition of The Confidence-Man (1954), systematically traces the history of the book's reputation and observes that even with the Melville renaissance of the twenties, the work stands as the last piece of the author's fiction to be redeemed. Only lately, she comments, has it ceased to be regarded as “the ugly duckling” of Melville's creations. But recognition does not imply agreement, and it should not be thought that in the past fifteen years critics have reached any sort of unanimity on the novel's content. Since Mr. Chase's study, which approached the puzzling work as a satire on the American spirit—or, more specifically, as an attack on the liberalism of the day—and which speculated upon the novel's controlling folk and mythic figures, other critics, by now ready to assume that the book repaid careful analysis, have read the work in a variety of ways. It has been treated, among other things, as a religious allegory, as a philosophic satire on optimism, and as a Shandian comedy. One critic has conveniently summarized the prevailing situation by remarking that “the literary, philosophical, and cultural materials in this book are fused in so enigmatic a fashion that its interpreters have differed as to what the book is really about.”

This essay argues that Ralph Waldo Emerson's interest in the cutting-edge science of his generation helps to shape his understanding of persons as fluid expressions of power rather than solid bodies. In his 1872 "Natural History of Intellect," Emerson correlates the constitution of the individual mind with the tenets of Michael Faraday's classical field theory. For Faraday, experimenting with electromagnetism reveals that the atom is a node or point on a network, and that all matter is really the arrangement of energetic lines of force. This atomic model offers Emerson a technology for envisioning a materialized subjectivity that both unravels personal identity and grants access to impersonal power. On the one hand, adopting Faraday's field theory resonates with many of the affirmative philosophical and ethical claims central to Emerson's early essays. On the other hand, however, distributing the properties of Faraday's atoms onto the properties of the person also entails moments in which materialized subjects encounter their own partiality, limitation, and suffering. I suggest that Emerson represents these aspects of experience in terms that are deliberately discrepant from his conception of universal power. He presumes that if every experience boils down to the same lines of force, then the particular can be trivialized with respect to the general. As a consequence, Emerson must insulate his philosophical assertions from contamination by our most poignant experiences of limitation. The essay concludes by distinguishing Emersonian "Necessity" from Friedrich Nietzsche's similar conception of amor fati, which routes the affirmation of fate directly through suffering.

The debate over whether and how philosophers of today may usefully engage with philosophers of the past is nearly as old as the history of philosophy itself. Does the study of the history of philosophy train or corrupt the budding philosopher's mind? Why study the history of philosophy? And, how to study the history of philosophy? I discuss some mainstream approaches to the study of the history of philosophy (with special focus on ancient philosophy), before explicating the one I adopt and commend.

The aim of the present article is the analysis of Concerto for harpsichord and five instruments by Manuel de Falla – a piece which was dedicated by the composer to Wanda Landowska, an outstanding Polish harpsichord player. The piece was meant to commemorate the friendship these two artists shared as well as their collaboration. Written in the period of 1923-1926, the Concerto was the first composition in the history of 20th century music where harpsichord was the soloist instrument. The first element of the article is the context in which the piece was written. We shall look into the musical influences that shaped its form. On the one hand, it was the music of the past: from Cancionero Felipe Pedrell through mainly Bach’s polyphony to works by Scarlatti which preceded the Classicism (this influence is particularly noticeable in the third movement of the Concerto). On the other hand, it was music from the time of de Falla: first of all – Neo-Classicism and works by Stravinsky. The author refers to historical sources – critics’ reviews, testimonies of de Falla’s contemporaries and, obviously, his own remarks as to the interpretation of the piece. Next, Inés R. Artola analyses the score in the strict sense of the word “analysis”. In this part of the article, she quotes specific fragments of the composition, which reflect both traditional musical means (counterpoint, canon, Scarlatti-style sonata form, influence of old popular music) and the avant-garde ones (polytonality, orchestration, elements of neo-classical harmony).

Purpose The purpose of this review article is to examine the well-being of faculty in higher education. Success in academia depends on productivity in research, teaching, and service to the university, and the workload model that excludes attention to the welfare of faculty members themselves contributes to stress and burnout. Importantly, student success and well-being is influenced largely by their faculty members, whose ability to inspire and lead depends on their own well-being. This review article underscores the importance of attending to the well-being of the people behind the productivity in higher education. Method This study is a narrative review of the literature about faculty well-being in higher education. The history of well-being in the workplace and academia, concepts of stress and well-being in higher education faculty, and evidence-based strategies to promote and cultivate faculty well-being were explored in the literature using electronic sources. Conclusions Faculty feel overburdened and pressured to work constantly to meet the demands of academia, and they strive for work–life balance. Faculty report stress and burnout related to excessively high expectations, financial pressures to obtain research funding, limited time to manage their workload, and a belief that individual progress is never sufficient. Faculty well-being is important for the individual and in support of scholarship and student outcomes. This article concludes with strategies to improve faculty well-being that incorporate an intentional focus on faculty members themselves, prioritize a community of well-being, and implement continuous high-quality professional learning.

[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] Foreign correspondence now holds a tenuous position in the journalism industry because in midst of financial struggles, news organizations have been willing to axe the budget for international news. This study explored what the professional networks of foreign correspondents looked like when major U.S. newspapers devoted resources to bureaus abroad. In-depth interviews of fifty-four foreign correspondents from eighteen newspapers informed the history of international reporting from 1960 through 2013. The patterns of relationships were analyzed using the constant comparative method and the components identified in social network theory. The analysis on foreign correspondents' relationships with sources explored how their interactions abroad led to adjustments in journalistic practices and values and how their intrinsic personal identities influenced those relationships. Furthermore, this socio-historical study examined what influenced the foreign correspondents' working arrangements, including theoretical insights into the remote professional interactions with the home office, the typologies of working arrangements with helpers, the insider-outsider relationships with local journalists, and elite professional expat community of foreign correspondents. The research concludes by tying this information to the future of foreign correspondence.
