This study focuses on determining the concentration of fluoride in groundwater and estimating the fluoride exposure through drinking water of three different age-groups for residents in Tay Son district, Binh Dinh province. A total of 50 well-water samples were collected and 220 people were surveyed by questionnaire from 50 households at 3 communes: Tay Phu, Binh Tuong, Tay Giang of Tay Son district. Results of this study showed that fluoride concentrations in well-water varied from 0.31 mg/L to 7.69 mg/L (mean 2.66 mg/L, SD: 2.18 mg/L) with 70% of the well-water samples above the maximum permissible limit of 1.5 mg/L (QCVN 09:2008/BTNMT). Groundwater in the studied area is seriously contaminated with fluoride. Exposure of fluoride among three age-groups was calculated according to the guidance of United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). The maximum estimated exposure doses of 0.721 mg/kg/day in the age-group of below 6 year, 0.530 mg/kg/day in the age-group between 6 and 12 years and 0.320 mg/kg/day in the age-group above 12 year exceed the LOAEL value of 0.1 mg/kg/day (WHO, 1984). A health risk due to fluorosis to the people in Tay Son district has become an evidence.

High Volume Air Sampler (HVAS) adalah alat pengambil sampel partikulat di udara ambien yang memiliki prinsip kerja dengan sistem vakum dengan menarik udara lingkungan sekitar melalui inlet dengan ukuran-selektif dan melalui filter berukuran 20,3 x 25,4 cm (8” x 10”) pada laju alir 1.132 liter/menit. Pada standard US-EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) sering menemui alat sampling yang digunakan memiliki bentuk yang besar (45,5” x 22,5” x 20”) dan berat sekitar 15-20 kg, sehingga timbul ide penelitian untuk membuat desain modifikasi alat pengambil sampel partikulat ambien dengan bentuk yang lebih fleksibel, ringan dan ringkas dengan menggunakan metode uji Gravimetri. Tahap awal penelitian ini adalah melakukan identifikasi peralatan HVAS standard dan peraturan yang mengatur tentang pengujian partikulat. Kemudian merubah bentuk fisik luarnya (memperkecil) tanpa merubah fungsi yang ada didalamnya dan diuji coba bersamaan kinerjanya. Hasil uji coba diolah menggunakan statistik. Dengan menggunakan hasil identifikasi HVAS standard EPA, maka didapat desain modifikasi HVAS dengan dimensi unit utama 15,35” x 15,35” x 10” (PxLxT), kaki knockdown sepanjang 4,5” dari hollow 4x4cm sebanyak 12 buah, dan memiliki berat total sekitar 23 lbs / 10,58 kg.Keseluruhan proses pembuatan alat ini hanya memerlukan biaya sebesar Rp.11.350.000,-. HVAS modifikasi memiliki kemampuan yang tidak beda nyata dengan HVAS existing berdasarkan nilai Anova, dimana nilai P =0,985. HVAS modifikasi yang didesain telah memenuhi standard dengan bentuk lebih kecil dan lebih ringan, sehingga bisa memudahkan dalam penyimpanan dan mobilisasi pengujian sampel partikulat ambien. Berdasarkan penggunaan material untuk pembuatan HVAS modifikasi didapatkan angka yang lebih murah karena reduksi material pembentuk rangka HVAS. HVAS modifikasi dapat dipergunakan sebagai alat sampling untuk pengujian sampel partikulat di udara ambien.

 Besides having a positive impact, rapid industrial development also gives a negative impact in the form of industrial waste causing environmental pollution. Lead is one of the heavy metal ions that become a primary indicator of pollution according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). The determination of lead directly in environmental samples is often difficult because of the very low concentration of metal ions and the matrix interferences. Therefore, preconcentration techniques that can simplify the matrix are required. Ionic exchange resins, functionalized chelating resins, and ion imprinted polymers are mostly used to preconcentrate the trace elements. Poly (anthranilic acid-co-formaldehyde) is polymer synthesized by mixing anthranilic acid, formaldehyde, and HCl. The poly (anthranilic acid-co-formaldehyde) was characterized by FTIR and SEM analysis. Characterization results indicate that polymerization reaction has been formed indicated by the vibration of the CH2 bridge. Poly (anthranilic acid-co-formaldehyde) has a relatively smooth surface with pores. The batch method was applied. The maximum adsorption for Pb(II) ions was 16.37 mg/g at pH 5 with a contact time of 10 minutes. Keywords: poly (anthranilic acid-co-formaldehyde), adsorption, lead Selain memberikan dampak positif, perkembangan industri yang pesat juga dapat memberikan dampak negatif berupa limbah industri penyebab pencemaran lingkungan. Timbal merupakan salah satu ion logam berat yang menjadi indikator primer pencemaran menurut United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Penentuan konsentrasi timbal secara langsung dalam sampel lingkungan seringkali sulit dilakukan karena terdapat pada konsentrasi renik dengan matriks yang rumit. Oleh karena itu, teknik prakonsentrasi yang dapat menyederhanakan matriks sangat diperlukan. Resin penukar ion, resin pengkhelat, dan ion imprinted polymers banyak digunakan untuk prakonsentrasi unsur renik. Poly (anthranilic acid-co-formaldehyde) merupakan polimer yang disintesis dengan cara mencampurkan asam anthranilat, formaldehida, dan HCl. Karakterisasi poly (anthranilic acid-co-formaldehyde) telah dilakukan menggunakan FTIR dan SEM. Hasil karakterisasi mengindikasikan bahwa reaksi polimerisasi telah terbentuk yang ditunjukkan dengan adanya vibrasi CH2 bridge. Poly (anthranilic acid-co-formaldehyde) memiliki morfologi permukaan yang relatif halus dan berpori. Metode yang digunakan untuk mempelajari kemampuan adsorpsi adalah metode batch. ABSTRACTPulo Ampel Industrial Zone in Serang Regency is an industrial zone with a high level of threat from a technological hazard. One possible route this threat can be manifested is in the form of explosion potential from the storage and transport tanks of toxic and dangerous materials e.g. Ethylene and Butadiene gases. Within the framework of disaster risk reduction, disaster risk analysis is carried out which includes the analysis of threats and vulnerabilities along the path of transport of these hazardous materials. To determine the level of explosion hazard, due to the occurrence of transportation accidents, modeling using ALOHA® (Areal Locations of Hazardous Atmospheres) software, which was developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), was carried out. The model used in this study was the BLEVEs (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosions) scenario during gas transportation using ISO Tank, which represents the worse possible scenario. Meanwhile, disaster vulnerability analysis is calculated based on social vulnerability aspect which includes population density and vulnerable group parameters by utilizing the scoring method in accordance to Head of BNPB Decree No.2 of 2012. Based on the hazard and vulnerability level, disaster risk maps are obtained along the Ethylene and Butadiene transport lines covering the information related to the area of the explosion which intersected with population settlement in Serang Regency, Banten Province.Keywords: risk reduction, trasportation, hazardous materials, vulnerabilities, explotionABSTRAKZona Industri Pulo Ampel di Kabupaten Serang merupakan zona industri dengan ancaman bencana kegagalan teknologi yang relatif tinggi. Ancaman bahaya yang dapat ditimbulkan diantaranya berupa potensi ledakan dari tangki-tangki penyimpanan maupun tangki transportasi bahan  berbahaya dan beracun (B3) terutama gas Etilena maupun Butadiena. Dalam rangka pengurangan risiko bencana, maka dilakukanlah analisis risiko bencana terhadap tangki transportasi B3 yang meliputi analisis ancaman dan kerentanan di sepanjang jalur transportasi B3 tersebut. Untuk menentukan salah satu tingkat bahaya yang berupa ledakan akibat kecelakaan transportasi gas dilakukanlah pemodelan dengan menggunakan perangkat lunak modeling ALOHA® (Areal Locations Of Hazardous Atmospheres) yang dikembangkan oleh United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Model yang digunakan di dalam kajian ini menggunakan skenario ledakan terburuk berupa skenario BLEVEs (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosions) pada saat transportasi gas menggunakan ISO Tank. Sementara analisis kerentanan bencana dihitung berdasarkan aspek kerentanan sosial yang meliputi parameter kepadatan penduduk dan kelompok rentan dengan menggunakan metode skoring sesuai Perka BNPB No. 2 Tahun 2012. Berdasarkan tingkat bahaya dan kerentanan tersebut diperolehlah peta risiko bencana di sepanjang jalur transportasi gas Etilena dan Butadiena yang meliputi informasi terkait luas area permukiman penduduk terdampak ledakan di Kabupaten Serang, Provinsi Banten.Kata kunci: pengurangan risiko, transportasi, bahan beracun dan berbahaya, kerentanan, ledakan

Environmental health risk assessment has a long history in both the United States and Russia. Risk assessment methods have arisen and developed to protect against the dangers of the forced use of tens of thousands of chemicals in the modern world. Because chemicals play such an important role, it is impossible to ban their use altogether, and the task of their safe use becomes more and more critical. With the solution of this problem, the creation of modern environmental legislation began, based on an assessment of the hazard or potential hazard associated with the impact of these substances on humans. Risk assessment has become the scientific basis for calculating exposure limits for many chemicals that pollute the environment. Since compliance with environmental legislation is costly to industry, methods have been developed. They are being improved on to quantify the burden of proof and the appropriateness of environmental quality regulation. Environmental Health Risk Assessment was first developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Russia has accumulated a great deal of practical experience in assessing environmental risks and developing appropriate methodological recommendations. Thus, the basis was created for long-term cooperation between the two countries. This article summarizes the history of such collaboration, including a joint project to disseminate practical risk assessment in Ukraine.

Background:Premature mortality is an important way to quantify disease burden. Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) can die prematurely of disease, however, the premature mortality burden of SSc is unknown. The years of potential life lost (YPLL), in addition to age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) in younger ages, can be used as measures of premature death.Objectives:To evaluate the premature mortality burden of SSc by calculating: 1) the proportions of SSc deaths as compared to deaths from all other causes (non-SSc) by age groups over time, 2) ASMR for SSc relative to non-SSc-ASMR by age groups over time, and 3) the YPLL for SSc relative to other autoimmune diseases.Methods:This is a population-based study using a national mortality database of all United States residents from 1968 through 2015, with SSc recorded as the underlying cause of death in 46,798 deaths. First, we calculated the proportions of deaths for SSc and non-SSc by age groups for each of 48 years and performed joinpoint regression trend analysis1to estimate annual percent change (APC) and average APC (AAPC) in the proportion of deaths by age. Second, we calculated ASMR for SSc and non-SSc causes and ratio of SSc-ASMR to non-SSc-ASMR by age groups for each of 48 years, and performed joinpoint analysis to estimate APC and AAPC for these measures (SSc-ASMR, non-SSc-ASMR, and SSc-ASMR/non-SSc-ASMR ratio) by age. Third, to calculate YPLL, each decedent’s age at death from a specific disease was subtracted from an arbitrary age limit of 75 years for years 2000 to 2015. The years of life lost were then added together to yield the total YPLL for each of 13 preselected autoimmune diseases.Results:23.4% of all SSc deaths as compared to 13.5% of non-SSc deaths occurred at <45 years age in 1968 (p<0.001, Chi-square test). In this age group, the proportion of annual deaths decreased more for SSc than for non-SSc causes: from 23.4% in 1968 to 5.7% in 2015 at an AAPC of -2.2% (95% CI, -2.4% to -2.0%) for SSc, and from 13.5% to 6.9% at an AAPC of -1.5% (95% CI, -1.9% to -1.1%) for non-SSc. Thus, in 2015, the proportion of SSc and non-SSc deaths at <45 year age was no longer significantly different. Consistently, SSc-ASMR decreased from 1.0 (95% CI, 0.8 to 1.2) in 1968 to 0.4 (95% CI, 0.3 to 0.5) per million persons in 2015, a cumulative decrease of 60% at an AAPC of -1.9% (95% CI, -2.5% to -1.2%) in <45 years old. The ratio of SSc-ASMR to non-SSc-ASMR also decreased in this age group (cumulative -20%, AAPC -0.3%). In <45 years old, the YPLL for SSc was 65.2 thousand years as compared to 43.2 thousand years for rheumatoid arthritis, 18.1 thousand years for dermatomyositis,146.8 thousand years for myocarditis, and 241 thousand years for type 1 diabetes.Conclusion:Mortality at younger ages (<45 years) has decreased at a higher pace for SSc than from all other causes in the United States over a 48-year period. However, SSc accounted for more years of potential life lost than rheumatoid arthritis and dermatomyositis combined. These data warrant further studies on SSc disease burden, which can be used to develop and prioritize public health programs, assess performance of changes in treatment, identify high-risk populations, and set research priorities and funding.References:[1]Yen EY….Singh RR. La presencia de plaguicidas organoclorados en el ambiente es preocupante por su persistencia, potencial de transporte a larga distancia y grado de toxicidad para la fauna y los seres humanos. En México, Chiapas ocupa el primer lugar en la producción de alimentos orgánicos, y Tecpatán es el principal municipio productor de leche orgánica. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar la presencia de plaguicidas organoclorados en forraje para ganado lechero en unidades de producción de leche orgánica. Se eligieron tres unidades de producción de leche orgánica y se colectaron muestras de forraje y leche en cada unidad. Los plaguicidas se extrajeron y purificaron con base en lo establecido por la USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) y se analizaron por cromatografía de gases con detector de captura de electrones. Los compuestos que rebasaron el límite máximo permisible según el Codex Alimentarius fueron lindano, heptacloro + epóxido de heptacloro y aldrín + dieldrín (37.5 ± 84, 62 ± 125 y 20 ± 50 ng.g-1 base grasa, respectivamente). En las muestras de forraje los valores más altos fueron alfa + beta-HCH, lindano y heptacloro + epóxido de heptacloro (76.3 ± 140, 43 ± 105 ng.g-1 y 40 ± 76 ng.g-1 peso seco). Es probable que la destacada presencia de estos compuestos se deba a su utilización en el control de vectores en campañas de salud o de ectoparásitos del ganado de la región por parte de productores convencionales.

In September 2015, VW had admitted to United States regulators that it had deliberately installed “defeat devices” in many of its diesel cars, which enabled the cars to cheat on federal and state emissions tests, making them able to pass the tests and hit ambitious mileage and performance targets while actually emitting up to 40 times more hazardous gases into the atmosphere than legally allowed. The discovery had prompted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to halt final certification of VW’s 2016 diesel models, and VW itself had halted sales of its 2015 models. As fallout from the defeat devices developed, VW posted its first quarterly loss in more than 15 years, and its stock plummeted. Top executives were replaced, and VW abandoned its goal of becoming the world’s largest automaker. Stakeholders around the world had been asking since the scandal broke: “How could this have happened at Volkswagen?”

Introduction: Extreme weather events such as dust storms are predicted to become more frequent as the global climate warms through the 21st century. Studies of Asian, Saharan, Arabian, and Australian dust storms have found associations with cardiovascular and total non-accidental mortality and hospitalizations for stroke. However, the only population-level epidemiological work on dust storms in the United States was focused on a single small metropolitan area (Spokane, WA), and it is uncertain whether its null results are representative of the country as a whole. Hypothesis: Dust storms in the United States are associated with daily cardiovascular mortality. Methods: Dust storm incidence data (N=141), including date and approximate location, as well as meteorological station observations, were taken from the U.S. National Weather Service. County-level mortality data for the years 1993-2005 were acquired from the National Center for Health Statistics. Ambient particulate matter monitor concentrations were obtained from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Inference was performed used conditional logistic regression models under a case-crossover design while accounting for the nonlinear effect of temperature. Results: We found a 9.5% increase in cardiovascular mortality at a two-day lag (95% CI: [0.31%,19.5%], p = 0.042). The results were robust to adjusting for heat waves and ambient particulate matter concentrations. Analysis of storms occurring only on days with <0.1 inches of precipitation strengthened these results and in addition yielded a mean daily increase of 4.0% across lags 0-5 (95% CI: [0.07%,20.8%], p = 0.046). In Arizona, the U.S. state with the largest number of storms, we observed a 13.0% increase at a three-day lag (CI: [0.40%,27.1%], p = 0.043). Conclusions: Dust storms in the U.S. are associated with increases in lagged cardiovascular mortality. This has implications for the development of public health advisories and suggests that further public health interventions may be needed.
