This article explores regional Buddhist monasteries in Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) China, including their arrangement, functions, and sources for their study. Specifically, as a case study, it considers the reconstruction of the Kaiyuan monastery 開元寺 in Sizhou 泗州 (present-day Jiangsu Province) with reference to the works of three prominent state officials and scholars: Bai Juyi 白居易 (772–846), Li Ao 李翱 (772–841), and Han Yu 韓愈 (768–824). The writings of these literati allow us to trace the various phases of the monastery’s reconstruction, fundraising activities, and the network of individuals who participated in the project. We learn that the rebuilt multi-compound complex not only provided living areas for masses of pilgrims, traders, and workers but also functioned as a barrier that protected the populations of Sizhou and neighboring prefectures from flooding. Moreover, when viewed from a broader perspective, the renovation of the Kaiyuan monastery demonstrates that Buddhist construction projects played a pivotal role in the social and economic development of Tang China’s major metropolises as well as its regions.

Previous research has increased our understanding of digital transformation (DT) and digital business ecosystems as independent topics. Less is known about how DT unfolds in digital business ecosystems. Such collaborative creation of digital innovations is affected by individual actors and by ecosystem as a whole. Based on an empirical case study of an ecosystem facilitator company and its digital business ecosystems as embedded cases, this paper contributes to the understanding of key success factors in new digital business ecosystems. The findings support collaborative governance as an important tool in leading the DT among multiple partners. Moreover, the findings present the concept of a common rulebook, including the practices, principles, guidelines, tools, handshakes, and boundaries, as an enabler for ways of working in an ecosystem. Managers can use this paper to increase their understanding on the governance of digital business ecosystems and to clarify their organisational expectations when participating in joint endeavours involving DT.

The purpose of this article is to lead a case study on perceptions around remote education and hybrid education in higher education.  The case study of a graduate university program is articulated by the design-based research approach for analyzing perceptions about remote education in the Covid-19 pandemic and to identify key success factors for new educational normality through the microcycle of análisis and exploration.  Among the findings, it is recognized that remote education responded to the emergency of the pandemic and identified key success factors such as teaching and learning timing, synchronous teaching, instructional design of virtual learning environments, and digital transformation in universities. These results allow us to re-signify the formal concept of blended learning including key strengths of remote learning and consider it as a strategic learning model for new higher education normality that will progressively recover face-to-face classrooms and expand students’ learning. This research contributes to raising clues from blended learning to renovate post-pandemic education

Brazilian companies are increasingly turning to web-based corporate training by virtue of the fact that they need to train their employees within tight budget constraints in a country of continental dimensions. However, most of these companies do not know what the critical success factors in these endeavors are. Therefore, this chapter seeks to investigate some key success factors associated with such digital enterprises. In order to achieve this, the multiple case study method is used, whereby two cases, both conducted within the same Brazilian company, leading to opposite outcomes – a success and a failure – are analyzed in depth. Accordingly, the two aforementioned cases are investigated by using quantitative data analysis based on bi- and multi-variate linear regressions, as well as t-tests. The conclusions were that “Goal Orientation”, “Source of Motivation”, and “Metacognitive Support” were the three critical dimensions in these two web-based corporate training programs under analysis.

This extended abstract discusses local content opportunities in economic development for the Aboriginal community. Local content requirements have become a strategic community development consideration during the past few years. This abstract links the topics of local content commitments and indigenous economic development via leveraging relationships with indigenous contractors in Australia. The creation of indigenous businesses that strive to succeed in the market and compete with non-indigenous companies is key in developing sustainable working opportunities for indigenous Australians. Many oil and gas players have publicly committed to contribute to indigenous business participation offering contractual opportunities and designing capacity-building programs and initiatives. The market for indigenous contractors services is, therefore, rapidly growing and presents considerable opportunities for existing and new players providing services to the resources industry in Australia. The specific demand is driven by corporate social responsibility policies and by the limited capacity of suppliers to deliver what is required by large new and expansion projects in the resource (both mining/oil and gas) sectors in Australia to maintain their social licence to operate. We present the results of a survey about policies and practices of some of the leading oil and gas operators in Australia, highlighting best practices in indigenous business engagement. We also analyse (from interviews with indigenous enterprises) barriers and issues encountered so far in indigenous contracting. International examples about the impact that indigenous enterprises can have on local community social and economic development complement the survey. Note: the term indigenous as used in this extended abstract refers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Compared to various other types of entrepreneurships, high-tech entrepreneurships are the most difficult to succeed in, but the rewards can be great. For startups, identifying customers and markets are as important as developing a product. Given the limited scale of domestic markets, if a high-tech startup wants to become a unicorn company, it goes without saying that entering international markets is necessary. This study considers high-tech startups as the research object. Through literature review, it first summarizes five major dimensions and 15 criteria. Then, it conducts the preliminary questionnaire survey on the effects of firm competencies and industry environment on internationally successful high-tech startups using expert questionnaires. The questionnaire survey was also used to establish the hierarchical structure and key success factors (KSF). Subsequently, the study conducted survey and statistical analysis of the questionnaire data using analytic hierarchy process (AHP). By assessing the dimensions and summarizing the key success factors, this study can serve as a useful reference for future startups. Existing startups can examine their own conditions and opportunities to reconsider their strategic positioning. Additionally, the findings of this study can support high-tech startups to enable them to concentrate on their core competencies in order to strengthen competitiveness and likelihood of success in international markets.
