Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an ecological imbalance of the vaginal microbiota affecting mostly women of reproductive age group. This study was carried out among 160 nonpregnant women registered at the Outpatient Department of Gynaecology/Obstetrics of KIST Medical College Teaching Hospital, Imadol, Lalitpur, Nepal, from November 2014 to May 2015. The aim of the study was to assess the association of the risk factors with BV and analyze the type of bacteria associated with BV. Nugent’s scoring method was used for diagnosis of BV in this study. The overall prevalence of BV was 24.4% among symptomatic patients. Douching was statistically related to BV(P=0.015). Also, BV was significantly associated with consistency(P=0.0001), odor(P=0.02), and amount of abnormal vaginal discharge(P=0.09). Contraceptives users on anatomical sites were found more prone to BV than those who did not use contraceptives on anatomical sites.Pseudomonasspp.,Escherichia coli, Acinetobacterspp., Proteusspp., Klebsiellaspp., Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Enterobacterspp., Citrobacterspp., Staphylococcus aureus,Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci (CoNS),andStreptococcus agalactiaewere associated with BV and out of thoseLactobacillusspp. was the predominant organism. The higher prevalence of BV among symptomatic patients indicates interventions should be applied to reduce the incidence of stillbirth, abortion, and sterility.

<p><strong>Objective</strong>: This interventional study has undertaken to assess the gonadal function of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients within reproductive age group following single dose of radioactive iodine (131I) therapy/ablation.</p><p><strong>Patients and Methods:<em> </em></strong>A total of 69 patients (25 male and 44 female) of DTC were included in this study, those were referred for 131I ablation after total thyroidectomy. Following RAI, these patients were followed-up three times at three months interval.  The usual I-131 dose was 75 or 100 m Ci for ablation of thyroid residues and 150 mCi for treatment of nodal metastasis. All the patients were interviewed about menstrual (female only) and reproductive history and investigated of the level of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone of male patients and FSH, LH, estradiol (E2) of female patients before administration of  131I and three, six and nine months after therapy.</p><p><strong>Result</strong>: In this study all of the 25 (100.0%) male patients showed high FSH level after three months of therapy. The mean± SD FSH level of male patients was found significantly (p-0.001) higher (15.59±7.53 IU/L) after three months of therapy than the pretherapy (4.85±2.57 IU/L) level.  The mean± SD of FSH level was significantly declining in six months and nine months of follow up. The mean± SD of LH hormone level of these patients was found 6.1±3.67 IU/L in pretherapy which was significantly increased to 7.67±4.33 IU/L after three months. The mean LH level was 7.20±3.98 IU/L at six months follow up and 7.3±3.5IU/L after nine months. The differences of LH level between 3 months to 6 months and 6 months to 9 months are not statistically significant. No significant change was observed in testosterone level throughout the study period. In female, five patients developed irregular menstruation (changed duration of cycle or lighter amount), three patients developed amenorrhea associated with hot flashes within six months of 131I administration. Biochemical study of the patients with amenorrhoea showed markedly elevated serum FSH, LH level and declined E2 level. The FSH, LH levels of the two patients with amenorrhea became normal within study period and one patient had persistent amenorrhea at 9 months. E2 level raised slowly.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: A single dose of radio-iodine (131I) therapy causes impairment of gonadal function of male patients within reproductive age group. In case of female patients the effect is insignificant. The effect is usually reversible and gonadal function of the patients restores within the study period.</p><p>Bangladesh J. Introduction: There are three types of compression of neck which are of primeforensic importance – (1) Manual strangulation (2) Hanging (3) Ligature strangulation. Ligaturemark is found in the latter two types.1 Ligature mark is a pressure mark on the neck underneaththe ligature. Initially it appears as a pale groove which on drying becomes yellowish brownparchment like.2,5 Objective: The aim is to study the information provided by a ligature markin ligature asphyxial deaths. Methodology: Study Design: A retrospective study on ligatureasphyxial deaths. Setting: Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Departments of King EdwardMedical University, Lahore and Nishtar Medical College, Multan. Period: January, 2012 toDecember, 2013. Results: The incidence of violent ligature asphyxial deaths was 4.21% of thetotal medicolegal deaths autopsied. Age group 21 to 30 years accounted for the maximumcases (37.6%). Male: female ratio was 1.02. Nylon rope (44.7%) was the most common ligaturematerial used. Ligature mark was single in all cases and was situated above thyroid cartilage in82.92% cases of hanging. In ligature strangulation deaths, mark was one in number in 93.18%cases and was below thyroid cartilage in 97.72% cases. The manner of death in hangingwas mostly suicidal (90.24%) as compared to homicidal in all cases of ligature strangulation.Ligature mark was incompletely encircling the neck in 85.36% cases and obliquely present in100% cases of hanging. In all deaths due to ligature strangulation, it was completely encirclingand transversely present around the neck. Underlying soft tissues of neck were glisteningwhite in all hanging deaths while it showed extravasations of blood in all ligature strangulationcases. Conclusions: A meticulous examination of the ligature mark during autopsy, though notconclusive, can give valuable information that can be very helpful in diagnosing deaths due tohanging and ligature strangulation.

Background: In Bangladesh the neonatal mortality rate is unacceptably high, at 48.4 per 1,000 live births and it is higher in rural areas while the neonatal mortality rate in Asia is 41 per 1,000 live-births, compared to 7 per 1,000 live-births in developed countries.Materials & Methods: This descriptive type of cross sectional study was carried out among 180 rural mothers of reproductive age in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Mymensingh from October 2013 to January 2014. Data were collected on a pretested questionnaire by face to face interview. Results: The study revealed that 50.6% of the respondents were housewife & education wise 42.2% had primary education with mean age 26.28±5.50 years. 61% respondents knew that cord should be cut by sterile blade and 65% respondents mentioned that cord should be cut immediate after delivery. Among them 44.4% knew about initiation of breast feeding within 1st hour of delivery, 71.1% believed the importance of colostrums feeding. Only 30% of the respondents knew about frequency of breast feeding to the baby should be 8-10 times in a day and 58% had knowledge on exclusive breast feeding. Of the respondents 52.2% went for exclusive breast feeding but others did not. 67% respondents immunized their baby whereas 33% did not. More than half of the respondents (59%) cleaned their breast before feeding and 80.6% respondents washed their hands before handling their newborn. A significant association was found between education and knowledge on immunization of newborn (P=0.000), education and exclusive breast feeding (P=0.003).Conclusion: The current study may boost up the awareness among rural mothers of reproductive age group on neonatal care which will further encourage them to be educated and thus neonatal morbidity & mortality may decline in some extent.Anwer Khan Modern Medical College Journal Vol. 9, No. 1: Jan 2018, P 50-56
