Background: The present study aimed to study the demographic profile women with gestational diabetes mellitus Methods: This hospital based cross-sectional study Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, SMS Medical College, Jaipur. Results: Mean age of patients was 27.68 ± 4.4 Yrs. Most of the study subjects in GDM group (54.7%) were Hindu. Study subjects in GDM group were almost equally from rural (50.7%).Most of the study subjects in both GDM group (88%) were housewives. Habit of smoking was found in only 6.7% females in GDM group. Habit of alcohol was found in 4% females in GDM group. Family history of diabetes was seen more in females with GDM (17.3%). Conclusion: This study concluded that the socio demographic factors influence the occurrence of GDM. Keywords: GDM, Age, Gravida

Background: Babies born to mothers with GDM are at increased risk of complications, primarily growth abnormalities and chemical imbalances such as hypoglycemia, GDM is a reversible condition and women who have adequate control of glucose level scan effectively decrease the associated risks and give birth to healthy babies. The objective was to estimate the prevalence and the predictors of gestational diabetes mellitus.Methods: This study was conducted as a cross sectional study among the antenatal mothers at the outpatient department of the rural and urban health centers of the KG hospital and PG institute and its affiliated centers in Coimbatore. The study period was one year and during which 150 antenatal mothers participated in the study.Results: The prevalence of GDM was 76 (9%) and 74 (11%) in rural and urban health centers respectively. The maximum number of GDM Mothers to be 26-30years of age with a peak indicating 42% and 39% of GDM mothers were found to be in primigravida, 48% of GDM mothers were primipara. About 65% of GDM pre-pregnant mothers were overweight according to BMI, 53% of GDM mothers had positive family history of DM. Majority of the study population 100 (67%) had HBA1C less than 6% and the remaining 50 (33%) had more than 6% value. The variables like age, gravida, parity, family history of diabetes, pre-pregnant BMI, history of PCOS, history of hypertension, history of hypothyroidism was compared with the glycaemic status (HBA1C values) and it was found to be statistically significant at P<0.05.Conclusions: The commonest risk factors which increases the incidence of GDM were family history of diabetes mellitus, overweight pre-pregnant BMI, history of PCOS, hypothyroidism, increasing gravidity and parity respectively.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Gestational diabetes is the most common metabolic disorder during pregnancy and postpartum thyroiditis is a destructive thyroiditis that can cause serious complications for the mother and her child. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of postpartum thyroiditis in women with gestational diabetes.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> In this cross-sectional study, 86 cases satisfy inclusion criteria and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and were evaluated for postpartum thyroiditis with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), T4, anti-TPO, T3RU tests. The groups with and without thyroiditis were compared and data was analyzed by statistical methods.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> There were 17 patients (19.8%) with postpartum thyroiditis, of whom 4 patients (23.5%) had hyperthyroidism, 9 patients (52.9%) were in the age group of 21 to 30 years, and 9 patients (52.9%) had a family history of diabetes.  Five patients (29.4%) with high anti-TPO level (P=0.022) and mean TSH and anti-TPO respectively, 2.8 (4.8) and 17.2 (35.9).</p><p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> The results showed that higher level of anti TPO titer and family history of diabetes can be associated with a higher rate of postpartum thyroiditis, so it is recommended that postpartum thyroiditis to be examined in women with gestational diabetes who have these mentioned items.</p>

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a serious pregnancy complication, in which women without previously diagnosed diabetes develop chronic hyperglycemia during gestation. Studies have revealed that the family history of diabetes is an important risk factor for the gestational diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of family history with diabetes mellitus on the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus. Subjects and Method: This was meta-analysis and systematic review. The study was conducted by collecting published articles from Pubmed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct, and Springer Link electronic databases, from year 2010 to 2020. Keywords used risk factor, gestational diabetes mellitus, family history, and cross-sectional. The inclusion criteria were full text, using English language, using cross-sectional study design, and reporting adjusted odds ratio. The study population was pregnant women. Intervention was family history of diabetes mellitus with comparison no family history of diabetes mellitus. The study outcome was gestational diabetes mellitus. The collected articles were selected by PRISMA flow chart. The quantitative data were analyzed by random effect model using Revman 5.3. Results: 7 studies from Ethiopia, Malaysia, Philippines, Peru, Australia, and Tanzania were selected for this study. This study reported that family history of diabetes mellitus increased the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus 2.91 times than without family history (aOR= 2.91; 95% CI= 2.08 to 4.08; p<0.001). Conclusion: Family history of diabetes mellitus increases the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus. Background: In Assam, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) screening is not routinely done during antenatal check-up in Assam, whereas anemia screening is done. Consequently, state-wide GDM estimate and its association with anemia in rural Assam is not available. Hence, we aim to study the demographic profile of pregnant women and their anaemia in relation to prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus in rural Assam.Methods: The present study was part of a larger community based cross-sectional study, conducted in Assam to determine the prevalence of GDM. The pregnant women in the gestational age of 24-28 weeks, who were free of any chronic illnesses, screened for Anaemia and, GDM through oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) as per diabetes in pregnancy study group in India guideline.Results: A total of 1212 pregnant women underwent the OGTT and test for haemoglobin estimation. Mean age of GDM women was (24.40±4.60 years), slightly higher than non-GDM women (23.50±4.04 years, p=0.007). After hemoglobin estimation, 83% of pregnant women found to be anaemic, 77% of these were GDM positive, which is quite significant with p value 0.025. A higher fraction of the pregnant mothers in our study were found suffering from anemia (83%). The independent association of GDM and anemia adjusted for other variables showed an inverse relationship.Conclusions: Though prevalence of anaemia and GDM in low resource setting in rural Assam found to be quite high, but they have inverse relationship. Anaemic pregnant women were found to be GDM protective.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) defined as any degree of carbohydrate intolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy contributes to about 90% of diabetes complicating pregnancy. GDM imposes risks for both mother and fetus, some of which continues throughout the life of mother and child. The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus and the associated risk factors among those who delivered in Saveetha medical college and hospital.Methods: A retrospective study was conducted by analysing the medical records of the patients who were admitted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology over a period of 1 year at Saveetha medical college and hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The diagnosis of GDM was made mainly by 75gm one step oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). The guideline endorses 2-hours 75-gm OGTT, irrespective of last meal timings with a cut off value of ≥140 mg/dl. All data was analysed by simple descriptive statistics and percentage method.Results: In the present study, the total number of deliveries for 1 year from April 2018 - March 2019 were 511 and among those the total number of antenatal mothers with GDM who delivered were 46. Therefore the prevalence of GDM was calculated to be 9% or 90 per thousand deliveries. In the present study, 37 (65.1%) pregnant women of GDM group were seen in the age group of above 25 years, 27 (58.59%) were multiparous, 25(54.25%) pregnant females with GDM were found to have overweight and obese out of 46 cases.Conclusions: Our current study concludes the Prevalence of GDM in Saveetha Medical College Hospital is 9% between April 2018-March 2019. We have identified the following risk factors for developing GDM: multiparity≥2; previous history of diabetes mellitus; age ≥ 25; BMI ≥25; and family history of diabetes.

IntroductionGestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is rapidly increasing worldwide. Globally, 18.4 million pregnancies are complicated by GDM. Despite its known effect, GDM screening is not part of routine antenatal services in Tanzania. There is paucity of data on the magnitude and risk factors for GDM. Therefore, this study sought to determine prevalence and predictors of GDM among pregnant women in Dodoma region, Tanzania from March to August 2018.Research design and methodsA cross-sectional study was carried out in Dodoma region, Tanzania between April and August of 2018. A total of 582 pregnant women were recruited from four local health facilities, where purposive sampling procedure was used to select the region, districts and health facilities. Simple random sampling was used to select study participants. Screening and diagnosis of GDM were performed using the 2013 WHO criteria. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed using SPSS V.23 to determine prevalence and independent predictors of GDM.ResultsAmong 582 participants, 160 (27.5%) participants were diagnosed with GDM. GDM was more prevalent in urban areas than rural areas, among overweight participants, among participants with a history of a large for gestational age baby, among participants with a history of caesarean section, and among participants with college or university education. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that maternal age above 35 years (adjusted OR (AOR) 3.115 (95% CI: 1.165 to 8.359)), pre-eclampsia (AOR 3.684 (95% CI: 1.202 to 5.293)), low physical activity level (AOR 4.758 (95% CI: 2.232 to 10.143)), lack of awareness of GDM (AOR 6.371 (95% CI: 1.944 to 13.919)), alcohol use (AOR 4.477 (95% CI: 1.642 to 12.202)) and family history of diabetes (AOR 2.344 (95% CI: 1.239 to 4.434)) were significantly associated with GDM.ConclusionsPrevalence of GDM is relatively high in Dodoma region. Most pregnant women are unaware of the condition such that it leads to a high-risk lifestyle. Besides, GDM significantly contributes to the number of high-risk pregnancies that go undetected and suboptimally managed. The antenatal care centres offer an optimum platform for screening, preventing and treating GDM by prioritising high-risk women.
