The population of the country of Kenya is drastically increasing thus causing the number of possible blood donors to rise. Despite this, the blood collected and stored in most blood banks is not enough to cater for the huge demand. The demand has been due to increase of number of accidents experienced in the country and the advancement in medical procedures which calls for organ transplant and blood transfusion. Even though systems have been developed which can connect the donors and recipients and location tracking, most people are dying because they don`t get this vital commodity in good time. The process of donating blood has not been enticing. There is nothing that prompts a person to donate blood. This call for developing a gamified blood donor management system based on intelligent agents so as to increase the number of donors and keep the system performance at optimal level. The project adopts Goal-Oriented Methodology in the system development process. Two agents are developed: donors’ agent and the blood admin agent. The intelligent agents help in profiles personalization thus improving the system performance. Gamification technique is implemented in the system so as to increase the traffic of blood donors interacting with the system and participating in the donation exercise. This increase the number of blood donors hence enough blood is collected to cater for the huge demand.

AbstractThis paper describes the design of an advanced solar tracking system development that can be deployed for a range of applications. The work focused on the design and implementation of an advanced solar tracking system that follow the trajectory of the sun’s path to maximise the power capacity generated by the solar panel. The design concept focussed on reliability, cost effectiveness, and scalability. System performance is of course a key issue and is at the heart of influencing the hardware, software and mechanical design. The result ensured a better system performance achieved. Stability issues were also addressed, in relation to optimisation and reliability. The paper details the physical tracker device developed as a prototype, as well as the proposed advanced control system for optimising the tracking.

Data from potential feline blood donors presented at two university blood banks in Italy were recorded. Blood typing was performed using an immunochromatographic method. Over the three years of the study 357 cats representing 15 breeds, 45.3% female and 54.7% male, with a mean age of 3.8 years were evaluated. Of these 90.5% were blood type A, 5.6% type B, and 3.9% type AB. The majority of the cats (54.6%) were European DSH (92.3% were type A, 5.1% type B, and 2.6% type AB), and 21% were Maine Coon (MCO) cats (100% blood type A). The estimated frequencies of transfusion reactions following an unmatched transfusion between DSH (donors and recipients), MCO (donor and recipients), DSH donors and MCO recipients, and MCO donors and DSH recipients were 4.8%, 0%, 0%, and 5.1% for major reactions and 7.2%, 0%, 7.7%, and 0% for minor transfusions reactions, respectively. In a population of blood donors that includes DSH and MCO the risk of transfusion reaction is between 5% and 8% if typing is not performed on donor and recipient blood. Blood typing should therefore be performed before transfusion to remove the risk of transfusion reactions due to blood type incompatibilities.

The MANPRINT (Manpower and Personnel Integration) Program is a comprehensive program designed to enhance human performance and reliability during weapon system development with the overall goal – of optimizing total system performance. Total system performance is a function of equipment performance and human performance as they are affected under varying environmental conditions which includes physical, social and operational conditions. The challenge the U.S. Army has today is to ensure these issues are addressed early in and continuously throughout the design process.

In this chapter, we will examine requirements determination and analysis that may be useful for defining the nonfunctional and domain requirements for an IDCM solution, including system sizing, architecture, and performance requirements. We also include a discussion on domain requirements, such as those for information technology and system administration. Our objectives are to do the following: • Document the requirements for system sizing and mass storage. • Consider the types of requirements analysis that enterprises apply to help suppliers of IDCM solutions offer an architecture solution that may meet enterprise requirements. • Define system performance requirements with known caveats and assumptions. • Define the requirements for the IDCM system to integrate with enterprise desktop, server, and network operating environments. • Define the requirements for the system development environment. • Document the system administration requirements for the system.

In 1996 he Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety launched the Genesis project, a technology-enabled reengineering endeavor. In September of 1999, after four years of planning, organizational restructuring and system development, the new system was released. To the accompaniment of great publicity, it fell dramatically short of expectations. This case provides the background necessary to understand the origins and shortcomings of the system, then focuses on the turn-around effort that took the system to a point of successful operation within a year of its going into production. The turn around was accomplished under great pressure to retreat to the legacy system. The effort involved a synergy of manual and technical corrections to bring overall system performance to acceptable levels. The DMV now faces the formidable challenge of taking full responsibility for the long-term maintenance of a system that was designed and implemented by outside contractors.

PurposeAlthough blood banks have recently started to recruit blood donors through social media platforms, including WeChat, to increase recruitment effectiveness, few researchers have studied their effects on blood donation behavior. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of using official WeChat accounts on repeat blood donation behavior.Design/methodology/approachThis paper used the backstage operation data of official WeChat accounts and blood supply chain management system data from the blood bank for the study to analyze the changes in repeat blood donation behavior. First, to analyze the changes in the average frequency of blood donation per year, average volume of single blood donation and blood eligible rate of repeat blood donors before and after following the official WeChat accounts by difference-in-differences model combined with propensity score matching (PSM-DID). Second, we examined the impact of official WeChat accounts on the proportion of repeat blood donors through survival analysis.FindingsThe results show that following WeChat accounts increases the average frequency of blood donation and blood eligible rate of repeat blood donors by 14.36% and 1.19%, respectively, and have no significant effect on the average volume of single blood donation. Further, WeChat accounts have a more significant impact on the average frequency of blood donations per year for workers, farmers, medical staff and groups with education levels of junior high school. In addition, official WeChat accounts can effectively increase the proportion of repeat donors.Originality/valueThe results provide a quantitative basis for the influence of official WeChat accounts on repeat blood donation behaviors. On the one hand, it is of great significance to guide the publicity and recruitment of unpaid blood banks. On the other hand, it provides an evidence for the promotion of official WeChat accounts.

The paper proposes and discusses the integration of WSN and RFID technologies in the IoT scenario. The proposed approach is based on the REST paradigm, thanks to which the two technologies can be seamless integrated by representing sensors, actuators and RFID related data as network resources globally addressable through state-of-the-art IoT protocols. The integration approach is detailed for the Smart Factory use case by proposing and developing an advanced IoT-based WSN and RFID integrated solution aiming at improving safety in industrial plants. The developed system can guarantee a safe access to factory dangerous areas in which safety equipments are required. In the paper, the system design is first presented, then, all the developed hardware and software solutions are described before presenting system performance results in a real test bed. System performance are reported in terms of response time and accuracy for authorization control and location tracking applications.

Employer shuttle systems in Connecticut and New Jersey are reviewed. The planning processes underlying system development, the approach used to determine potential markets for employer shuttle services, and service design principles are outlined, and system performance is evaluated. Several case studies are presented, and the requirements for a successful shuttle program are identified as reliable line-haul transit, a direct route to employer concentrations located not more than 20 min from the line-haul transit, a seamless transfer, a reasonable fare structure, employer and public interest and support, and an effective marketing program.

E-hailing services, in which riders request rides from their mobile devices, have rapidly developed into a viable transportation alternative for many travelers. This technology has changed the set of choices for travelers and has shifted travel patterns, most significantly away from traditional taxi services. However, several issues have arisen during this expansion. In this paper, an economical approach is proposed which considers both the effects of the travelers’ route choices and travel demand patterns. In this approach, we assume that all links can be surcharged for those using e-hailing services, and a heuristic process is applied to address this computationally difficult problem. A cost inverse function is introduced to update the demand changes along paths with different rates of e-hailing surcharges. The method is demonstrated on the mid-size network of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and on the large-scale city network of Anaheim, California. Results indicate that an optimal price could efficiently reduce e-hailing service demand during congestion hours and improve the transportation system performance to system optimal level.
