Nanohybrid composite resin is a type of composite resin restorative material containing micro-sized filler particles incorporated with nanoparticles. Composite resin restoration in the oral cavity can release its filler particles, one of them is aluminum ion. The pH of saliva is varied. This research aimed to determine the influence of salivary pH on aluminum ion solubility of nanohybrid composite resin. The materials used were nanohybrid composite resin Tetric Evoceram (Ivoclar Vivadent, Austria) and artificial saliva with pH of 5.6, 6.7, and 8.0. Twelve disc-shaped composite resin samples sized 5 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick were made. Samples were polymerized using light curing unit for 20 seconds. Composite resin samples were divided into three pH groups (n=4) and then each sample was soaked in 10 mL artificial saliva inside of polyethylene bottle. The immersion was done in the incubator for 14 days at 37ºC. The concentration of aluminum ion in artificial saliva solutions subsequently was calculated using AAS. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA (a=0,05). The mean concentration of aluminum ion released into saliva with pH 5.6, 6.7, and 8.0 were 0.538 ± 0.996 ppm, 0.431 ± 0.981 ppm, and 0.350 ± 0.071 ppm respectively. The result of One-way ANOVA showed a significant influence of salivary pH variation to the solubility of aluminum ion on nanohybrid composite resin (p<0,05). LSD test showed a significant difference only between saliva pH 5,6 and 8,0. The conclusion of this research was that low salivary pH increased the solubility of aluminum ion on nanohybrid resin composite in saliva.

ABSTRACT Objectives: The present study verified the influence of whitening dentifrices on the surface roughness of a nanohybrid composite resin. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two specimens were prepared with Filtek™ Z350 XT (3M/ESPE) and randomly divided into four groups (n = 08) that were subjected to brushing simulation equivalent to the period of 1 month. The groups assessed were a control group with distilled water (G1), Colgate Total 12 Professional Clean (G2), Sensodyne Extra Whitener Extra Fresh (G3), and Colgate Luminous White (G4). A sequence of 90 cycles was performed for all the samples. The initial roughness of each group was analyzed by the Surface Roughness Tester (TR 200-TIME Group Inc., CA, USA). After the brushing period, the final roughness was measured, and the results were statistically analyzed using nonparametric Kruskal–Wallis and Dunn tests for intergroup roughness comparison in the time factor. For intragroup and “Δ Final − Initial” comparisons, the Wilcoxon test and (one-way) ANOVA were, respectively, performed (α = 0.05). Results: The roughness mean values before and after brushing showed no statistically significant difference when the different dentifrices were used. None of the dentifrices analyzed increased significantly the nanohybrid composite resin surface roughness in a 1 month of tooth brushing simulation. Conclusions: These results suggest that no hazardous effect on the roughness of nanohybrid composite resin can be expected when whitening dentifrices are used for a short period. Similar studies should be conducted to analyze other esthetic composite materials.

Nanofilled composite resin restorations are in contact with saliva.Salivary pH affect the hydrolysis process and produce a surface roughness.S.mutansadhesion occur in a rough area of the oral cavity.The aim was to determine the effect of variations in salivary pHonS.mutansadhesion to nanofilled composite resin.Nanofilled composite resin(Filtex Z350XT-3M ESPE)5mm diameter and 2mm thick(N=12)were divided into three groups(n=4)and immersed in 5ml artificial saliva pH 3.5, pH 7, pH 8, incubated 14 days,37°C. Samples were soaked into saliva 1 hour,37 C. Samples were put into bacterial suspension 24 hours,37°C, diluted to 10.0.1ml of the final dilution were cultured on BHI agar, incubated 48 hours,37°C. S.mutans colonies were determined using Colony Counter(CFU/ml). Data were analyzed with One-Way ANOVA test(a=0.05) and LSD0.05. The test showed there is influence ofthe variations  in salivary pHonS.mutans adhesionto nanofilled composite  resin(p<0.05). Based on LSD0.05 test, there are significant differences between the pH 3.5 group and the pH 7; pH 8 groups, butnot between the pH 7group and the pH 8 group. Variations in salivary pH affectedS.mutansadhesion to nanofilled composite resin.The acidic pH of saliva increased the S.mutansadhesion on nanofilled composite resin compared with the neutral or alkaline.

Abstract: Nanofiller composite resin has small filler size which enhances its properties. However, these properties could decrease due to several factors. Acidic liquid such as coffee could reduce the hardness of composite resin. This study was aimed to analyze the effect of robusta and arabica coffee immersion on the hardness of nanofiller composite resin. A total of 27 composite resin samples were used and then were polished by using a soflex disc for 30 seconds on each roughness level. Samples were then divided into three groups, as follows: the control group with artificial saliva and the treatment groups with robusta coffee and arabica coffee. The composite resin molds were immersed in the three groups for 5 days. After five days of immersion, the hardness of the sample was tested by using a Vickers hardness tester. Artificial saliva as the control group had the highest mean hardness value of 112.98±8.67 VHN, followed by robusta coffee, and then by arabica coffee. The One Way Anova and post hoc LSD test showed that there were significant differences in all groups (p<0.05) except for the two treatment groups, namely robusta and arabica coffee groups which did not show any significant difference in the resin hardness (p>0.05). In conclusion, robusta and arabica coffee affect the hardness of the nanofiller composite resin, but there is no significant difference in the hardness between the robusta and arabica coffee groups.Keywords: composite resin hardness, nanofiller, robusta coffee, arabica coffee Abstrak: Resin komposit nanofiller memiliki ukuran filler kecil yang dapat meningkatkan fungsinya namun fungsi tersebut dapat menurun oleh beberapa hal. Cairan asam yang dikonsumsi seperti kopi dapat menurunkan kekerasan resin komposit. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh perendaman kopi robusta dan arabika terhadap kekerasan resin komposit nanofiller. Sampel resin komposit yang digunakan sebanyak 27 buah dan dilanjutkan dengan pemolesan menggunakan soflex disc selama 30 detik setiap tingkat kekasarannya. Sampel kemudian dibagi dalam tiga kelompok, yaitu kelompok kontrol dengan saliva buatan dan dua kelompok perlakuan dengan kopi robusta dan arabika. Sebanyak 27 buah resin komposit direndam ke dalam tiga kelompok tersebut selama lima hari kemudian diuji kekerasannya dengan vickers hardness tester. Saliva buatan sebagai kelompok kontrol memiliki nilai rerata kekerasan tertinggi sebesar 112,98±8,67 VHN, diikuti kopi robusta, dan nilai terendah yaitu kopi arabika. Hasil uji One Way Anova dan post hoc LSD menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan bermakna pada semua kelompok (p<0,05) kecuali pada kedua kelompok perlakuan yaitu antara kopi robusta dan arabika tidak menunjukkan adanya perbedaan kekerasan yang bermakna (p>0,05). Simpulan penelitian ini ialah kopi robusta dan arabika memengaruhi kekerasan resin komposit nanofiller namun tidak terdapat perbedaan kekerasan antara keduanya.Kata kunci: kekerasan resin komposit, nanofiller, kopi robusta, kopi arabika

Abstract Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effect of interval time after acidic beverage intake and brushing on roughness and hardness of resin composite. Materials and Methods Nanofilled resin composites were tested as per interval time (no interval, 15 or 30 minutes) between aging media (isotonic, sports drink) and brushing. Specimens (n = 9) were subjected to three cycles daily for 5 days with immersion in beverage followed by simulated brushing (585 strokes). The brushing (control) group was submitted only in brushing cycles. Roughness and microhardness were analyzed in the baseline and end of the experiment. Surface morphology was analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Statistical analysis Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (α = 0.05). Results Roughness was higher in no interval group and lower in 30 minutes and control. The 15 minutes present no statistical difference between control, 30 minutes and no interval. The hardness not present difference between groups. The SEM showed the no interval more roughness than 15 and 30 minutes, control and baseline. Conclusion The interval time between erosive and abrasive challenge is important to preserve the smoothness surface of composite resin.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of finishing and polishing on color stability of a nanofilled composite resin (Filtek Z350 XT) according to different immersion media.MATERIAL AND METHOD: Composite disks (10 mm diameter, 2 mm thickness) were prepared for each group (n = 6) using a stainless steel mold. The groups were divided according to the presence or absence of finishing and polishing procedure and immersion media (artificial saliva, artificial juice- KAPO(r) Coca-Cola(r)flavors: pineapple, orange, strawberry and grape). The finishing and polishing procedures were performed using Super -Snap(r) disks. The specimens were stored in artificial saliva for 24 hours (baseline) and were analyzed using a color spectrophotometer by CIELab system. Then, they were immersed in different media for 5 minutes, 3 times a day, every 4 hours during 60 days. They were stored in artificial saliva at 37 ± 1°C during the immersion intervals. After this time, new measure of color was performed. The data were analyzed using Kruskall-Wallis test and Mann- Whitney test. The significance level was 5%.RESULT: The results showed that the finishing/polishing not significantly influence the color stability of resin composite (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the color stability of the studied resin after immersion in different media (p > 0.05).CONCLUSION: The finishing and polishing procedures and the immersion media did not have influence on color stability of nanofilled resin Filtek Z350 XT.

Background: Although bonding to denture teeth after surface treatment with chemical agents is desirable, there is little information on the use of Visible Light Cure composite resin (VLC) as bonding denture materials. Objectives: To determine the effect of various surface treatments on shear bond strength between Visible Light Cure composite resin and the acrylic denture teeth interface. Methods: Forty cylindrical sticks of acrylic resin with denture teeth mounted atop were prepared. Various treatments were implemented upon the acrylic resin teeth surfaces. The samples were divided into four groups (n = 10). Light-cured composite resin (LC) was applied over all treated and untreated surfaces of tested groups. The shear bond was tested using a universal tensile testing apparatus with the knife-edge of a 0.8mm shear tester. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA performed at a confidence level of 95% and significant P-value of (P ≤ 0.05). Results: Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) between treated and untreated teeth surfaces. The treated surfaces exhibited various levels of bond strength depending on the type of treatment. Conclusion: Application of VLC bonding agent with prior treatment of methylmethacrylate (MMA) on the acrylic resin denture teeth resulted in maximum bond strength with composite resin.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of sealing of the screw access hole (SAH) on the fracture resistance of metal-ceramic implant-supported restorations. UCLA abutments were used to make 30 implant-retained mandibular molar restorations and divide equally into three groups: Group SRS: screw-retained restorations with SAH sealed; Group SRNS: screw-retained restorations with SAH not sealed; Group CR: cement-retained restorations. The following protocol was adopted to restore the SAH: the ceramic surface of the SAH was air-abraded with aluminum oxide; etched with 10% hydrofluoric acid; a silane coupling agent and a bonding agent were applied; cotton pellets were used as filling material and P-60 resin composite as restoring material. The cement-retained restorations were cemented with Rely-X U100. A metal rod with a spherical tip of 6.0 mm diameter was used to apply a vertical static load, simultaneously on the buccal and lingual incline cusps, at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min until the fracture of the specimens. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Dunnet test (p<0.05) for multiples comparisons. The mode of failure was evaluated by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). No significant difference between screw-retained restorations was found. The highest mean fracture resistance values were observed with CR group. Therefore, it was shown that SAH sealing did not influence the fracture resistance of the screw-retained restorations.

Composites have been widely used for anterior as well as posterior restorations due to increased aesthetic demands. Composite restorations placed in patients oral cavity is subjected to masticatory load, pH changes and chemical effect due to mouthwashes, beverages, food etc and the detrimental effects associated with these challenges on the microhardness of composite has to be determined. The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of two commercially available non-alcoholic mouth rinses on the microhardness of micro-hybrid and nanohybrid composite resins. Forty disc-shaped composite specimens were made from each type of composite materials and were divided into 5 groups with 8 samples each, Group 1= Microhybrid+Chlorhex, Group2=Microhybrid + Hexidine, Group3= Nanohybrid + Chlorhex, Group4= Nanohybrid+ Hexidine, Group 5= Nanohybrid and Micro hybrid + artificial saliva(Control).The samples were immersed in mouthrinses for 24 hrs and microhardness was subsequently measured using a Vicker’s microhardness tester. There was no significant difference in microhardness values of tested composite resins in either mouth rinses when compared to composites immersed in artificial saliva. Non-alcoholic mouth rinses do not affect the microhardness of micro-hybrid and nanohybrid composites.

Aim: To compare the microleakage of Cention N, a subgroup of composite resins with a resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) and a composite resin. Methods: Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 46 extracted human molars. The teeth were randomly assigned to four groups. Group A: Tetric N-Bond etch-and-rinse adhesive and Tetric N-Ceram nanohybrid composite resin, group B: Cention N without adhesive, group C: Cention N with adhesive, and group D: Fuji II LC RMGI. The teeth were thermocycled between 5°-55°C (×10,000). The teeth were coated with two layers of nail vanish except for 1 mm around the restoration margins, and immersed in 2% methylene blue (37°C, 24 h) before buccolingual sectioning to evaluate dye penetration under a stereomicroscope (×20). The data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon tests (α=0.05). Results: Type of material and restoration margin had significant effects on the microleakage (p<0.05). Dentin margins showed a higher leakage score in all groups. Cention N and RMGI groups showed significant differences at the enamel margin (p=0.025, p=0.011), and for the latter group the scores were higher. No significant difference was found at the dentin margins between the materials except between Cention N with adhesive and RMGI (p=0.031). Conclusion: Microleakage was evident in all three restorative materials. Cention N groups showed similar microleakage scores to the composite resin and displayed lower microleakage scores compared with RMGI.

Biodentine is a calcium silicate cement (CSC) that has been broadly applied in vital pulp therapy. The quality of the Biodentine-composite bond has a significant effect on the longevity of the definitive restoration. The aim of this study is to investigate the shear bond strength (SBS) between Biodentine and composite restoration at different maturation times of Biodentine aged in artificial saliva. Fifteen Biodentine discs were allocated into three groups (n = 5) based on the timeframe of performance of composite restoration: immediate (after 12  min), after 14 days, and after 28 days of Biodentine maturation. Total etch and rinse adhesive system and bulk-fill regular resin composite were used. The shear bond strength and the failure pattern were assessed. One-way ANOVA with the Bonferroni post hoc test was applied for statistical analysis at p < 0.05 . The highest (32.47 ± 8.18 MPa) and the lowest (4.08 ± 0.81 MPa) SBS values were recorded for 14 days and 12 min groups, respectively. Significant statistical differences were reported among the groups, and a high statistically significant difference was found between the immediate group and the other groups. Adhesive failure patterns were evident in all groups. More clinically acceptable bond strength between the Biodentine and overlaid composite restoration is at 14 days after Biodentine maturation. Delaying the coverage of Biodentine later than 14 days may significantly reduce the SBS. Using the artificial saliva as an aging medium may affect the SBS between Biodentine and composite material.
