At least since Akerlof (1970), asymmetric information in the case of experience goods has been a central issue in the economic literature. This paper studies regulation in markets where the quality of the experience good is never completely verifiable by consumers even after purchase. In the proposed model firms can decide the quality of the good: always producing a high quality good creates a positive externality in the market, but it causes an incentive to the firms to deviate and produce low quality goods. The main policy instrument for the government, in order to maximize Social Welfare, is to fix a minimum quality standard, but imposing a too high standard might, in some cases, lower the average quality of the good in the market.

It is well known that mold and casting table maintenance has a direct impact on the internal quality and surface quality of billets. In this paper, the evolution of the main key performance indicators (KPIs) associated with the main consumables of the Wagstaff Air slip billet casting technology is shown, such as molds, casting rings, transition plates and thimbles. The strategies taken to preserve a high standard of quality whilst monitoring the associated costs, are discussed. An automated Mold and Casting Table Maintenance Management system has been developed in house to make available the relevant information from the casting table servicing at the casting pit and at the mold room. A case study is described where this tool allowed us to reduce costs, keeping a high quality standard of the casting table maintenance, ensuring the internal quality of the final product.

The quality of water in a river is affected by its natural condition and pollutant input originated from activities conducted around the river. In the Siak river, however, the black water effect influences thedistribution of the pollutant in general. To understand the quality of water in the black water affected by an area, a study was conducted from December 2015 to July 2016. The water was sampled during lowand high tides, in 8 sampling sites that were distributed along the river, from the mouth of the river in Siak Sri Indrapura Regency to upstream in Palas Village, Kampar Regency (around 180 km from the mouth ofthe river). The results showed that in the downstream of the Siak river, the quality of water during the low and high tides was worse than the 3rd Class Water Quality Standard issued by the Government Regulation (GR No. 82 / 2001) except for the concentration of nitrate, total coliform, Hg, oil and fat. The BOD was 14-39.2 mg/L (the high tide) and 17-45.6 mg/L (the low tide), COD was 51.76-80.62 mg/L (thehigh tide) and 51.76-69.12 mg/L (the low tide), NH3-N was 0.03-1.09 mg/L (the high tide) and 0.03-0.92 mg/L (the low tide), while the NO2-N was 0.13-0.17 mg/L (the high tide) and 0.13-0.22 mg/L (the low tide). Based on the Storet Index, the water of the downstream in the Siak river during the low and the high tide can be categorized as heavily polluted (score -52 to -70), and it tends to decline during the high tide.

E-government has provided the state-run sector with numerous opportunities to offer a variety of services through websites to citizens and the private sector. These websites have been launched in order to provide easy access to government services, boost the efficacy of the government-run sector and reduce operational costs. Given the point that many of these websites have gradually been developed and have scarcely been standardized to meet the requirements of site visitors, it is necessary to develop models for quality assessment of such websites. In this study, an information systems quality assessment (ISQA) based method along with fuzzy analytic network process (ANP) has been exploited to assess the quality of governmental websites. In order to validate the proposed model, it is applied to portals in six Iranian free trade zones. Finally, the assessment results are discussed.

Marine life and natural scenery - in the category of nautical tourism - are the potentials of the Kelapa Lima, Kupang beach. However, there are problems that; construction progress, residentials and bussines activities nearby coast of Kelapa Lima, Kupang, indicated that there are contamination by wastewater into the waters of this beach. Then, this issue is adjusted to the standards Environment Minister Regulation number 51 of 2014 and in 2013 number 115 on the sea water quality standard. The method used is the equation written by Sumiotomo and Nerow (1970) in the Minister of Environment No. 115 of 2003. The formula that is used to calculate the results of studies measuring the location parameter with the default value determined by the Ministry of Environment in 2004. Later, research shows that the quality of the waters of the Pantai Kelapa Lima Kupang has begun to decline in the presence of contamination by sewage. Liquid waste is already affecting marine life that corals and mangroves, while the beauty of the sea coast, the liquid waste is already reducing the amount of oxygen for the oxidation process that takes coastal sea to the decomposition of waste into the sea, causing sedimentation affect water clarity sea shore. Therefore, there needs to be immediate action from the government to educate more people about the importance of maintaining the beauty of the beach, and helped make the disposal of liquid waste discharges in coastal areas to reduce the causes of liquid wastes into the coastal sea.

AbstractIn a horizontally differentiated duopoly, a green attribute (environmental quality) can be added to the products. Average green quality generates a positive externality entering the Government’s objective function (and possibly consumers’ utility). A tax on the “dirtiest” product decreases its environmental quality but it increases that of the cleaner rival enough to imply an average quality increase, achieving environmental protection. The same holds for a subsidy to production targeted to the cleanest producer. A generic quality-related subsidy also increases the positive externality, increases profits of the greenest and lowers those of the dirtiest producer. Education campaigns by the Government also increase average green quality.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact that minimum quality standards have on product quality when entrepreneurial innovation is considered. Design/methodology/approach The author develops a game-theoretic model. It is a standard vertical product differentiation model, but incorporates a minimum quality standard and uncertain entrepreneurial innovation. Findings While the minimum quality standard increases the expected quality of the low-quality product, under reasonable circumstances the expected quality of the high-quality good decreases. Thus, average quality can decrease with regulation intended to increase product quality. Research limitations/implications Past research on minimum quality standards does not consider its impact on entrepreneurial effort when their innovation investments lead to uncertain outcomes. Practical implications Minimum quality standard regulation can have counterproductive impacts if the impact on entrepreneurs is not considered. The regulation can disincentivize entrepreneurs leading to lower quality products. Social implications Regulation can be welfare reducing. Originality/value This paper is the first to incorporate entrepreneurial innovation into a product quality model to explore the impact of minimum quality standard regulation.
